NI's Action Strings are good for if you're looking for stuff with fast attack. Honestly, strings and orchestral stuff is where investing a little money can go a long way.

I jumped to windows 10 and only had a better experience with all of my audio gear.

^everything I use if you want an idea of what I haven't had any issues with.

Soundcloud's compression algorithms make me respect good mastering jobs so much more. It's like the NS10 of compression.

I prefer the superior absorbency of Bounty quilted.

Very weak paper towel game bro. Import some of Her Majesty's finest Regina Blitz (https://goo.gl/ixcALo) and wipe some of that smug-ass yank sarcasm off your face ya fucken heathen.

Damn...3 ply...the only paper towel sturdy enough to soak up the EU's remains...

Here I had a little reddit thread on my set up.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MusicBattlestations/comments/4s8p8s/clear_studio_clear_mind/

Theres an imgur link a few comments down where I go a little more in depth. But basically my studio is in a room with no windows, so all I had was this horrible anemic light. Got rid of all the shit lights and ran a few different colors of leds to bring it to life. It sounds stupid, but having warm purple light when I'm playing with synths makes such a huge difference. I've had it that way for about a year now and its been night and day for my creativity. I understand why all those high end studio builds have neon lights now.

Honestly, replacing all my regular lights with led rope has helped me get in the zone a lot faster. It feels like I'm jacking into the matrix when I turn my studio on.

Definitely has some good sound design going on (amongst other technical stuff) that I can respect, but I feel like it gets in the way of the music. A little too much wankery for the sake of it. Whether it's covering sub par songwriting ability or not I'm not sure. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Tipper...

I think it depends on what you're trying to accomplish with a set. Imo everyone should just play what they want and we'd all be much better off.

Electronic music has come a long way in the last five years in terms of being accepted as a serious form of music though. It's okay to loosen up and do things the way you want. Create and perform however suits the message you're trying to get across, even if it means having less girls with hoola hoops show up. I think the "playing for the crowd" mentality is becoming more and more obsolete. People go to shows to see their favorite producers now, not just to dance to whatever DJ's playing that night. It's not a background gig anymore.

To hit on the original topic more directly, I think keeping drums throughout a set is exhausting and boring. The point of a crescendo is to release the energy that's building; if your set's at 80% during the verses and breakdowns, it'll feel monotonous. Taking drums out forces people to focus on the melody and beauty of the music.

I mean he has moments like that in plenty of his songs, but just as a quick example.

Sound Design / Re: Best ways to start

Pick one of those programs and start clicking on things. It's a very non linear process. I remember watching the dodge and fuski tutorials early on.

Serum is just really open with what you can do with it. It has the most intuitive layout imo of any synth I've used and you can add your own wavetables so its infinitely expandable. Duda is a bad ass with updates too.

Grammy and to not die hating myself.

I think it's hard for a lot of people to grasp the grind of doing it because of the overall perception of what a career in music is. There's this fantasy of travelling and being free and creative and in love with everything. The reality is that getting good at producing is a long, frustrating process where you basically just have to treat it as a 9-5 job, which is a lifestyle most creative people inherently reject so they validate only working "when they're feeling it" or "when inspiration hits". It's the moment where you hate it and keep working that the magic happens.

Honestly, I detest music production so much. It's one of my least favorite things to do in the world. Staring at an empty timeline in Ableton and not knowing how I'm going to get to point B is like a big middle finger from the universe. But after hating myself for 100 hours working on a song, that moment when it finally comes together is so real.

Sorry but to answer the question, I don't think work ethic can be learned really. Lazy people can train themselves to work hard, but the're still lazy. That's how I am, just putting my head down and working, but still waiting for it to be over so my brain can not feel like it's imploding. Then I know people that are just there you know? It's like they've given up on comfort and rest and have accepted that everything's going to be a struggle and that's cool with them.
