Mixing/Mastering / Re: iZotopte Neutron - Anyone Using This?
« on: April 06, 2017, 05:03:43 am »
I'm not gonna lie, when i first bought it I was curious to see how its auto mixing was, so I made a demo track in like 30 minutes and just hit auto on every track as an experiment. Zero manual mixing at all. It genuinely did a good job haha.

Be sure to demo it first...you'll either love or hate the interface.

50-70 usually translates the best. There aren't really any hard numbers in production though. I brickwall high pass anything under 30 and rarely go below 40. Might feel good in my studio, but that shit's gonna disappear on most systems. Study the specrum of tracks you like though; learn to read analyzers like they're your first language.

I'd get a mic asap and start learning vocal technique on your own. Singers are...a pain in the ass. Especially in the early stages of being a producer. It's difficult to find someone who's gonna care as much about a song you're doing as you.

Yeah I'm always looking for serious people to collab with. Shoot me a pm or message on soundcloud so we can figure out what we can do man. I'm all Ableton as well.

I just like to focus the verses more toward the center and open up the mix during choruses. Give it air and width. It's less with how the chorus is composed sonically and more about how it's juxtaposed with the section before it.

I like off white and then use colored lights for vibe. Let's me change it up whenever.

Neutron is Izotope's new plug that has this interesting little auto mix feature on it, so I got lazy, dropped it on my busses and let it mix for me for the sake of the demo haha. I'm actually kind of blown away at how it performed.

The guitars required a little layering.

4 tracks of my PRS direct through my Forte interface cause I was too lazy to plug in my preamp (I think I have two turned off in this mix) ran them through a cla 76, guitar rig and two notes torpedo WoS Modeler.

1 of my bass (some cheap Specter bass) run through the same chain as the guitars with different settings.
1 instance of operator with no processing for low end
1 instance of serum following the bass line to give it some extra grit and mid low.

Haha if I finish it i"ll absolutely do more standard mixing! I was just feeling lazy and just wanted to songwrite without getting caught up in technical details :P

Anybody have any ideas feel free to let em rip. This has officially sold me on Neutron though. Literally zero manual mixing past gain staging.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Do you listen to your own music
« on: November 20, 2016, 08:46:16 pm »
Usually there's a grace period of a few weeks to a month after I release that I don't listen to it. Then, I listen to it obsessively cause, well, I made it and it's the music I wanna hear haha.

Junkie XL has had some crazy soundtracks happening lately. Such aggressive mixes.

I've heard good things about using Kontakt as a sampler, but I've always been too lazy/turned off by the interface. I imagine one day I'll figure it out and realize how much time I wasted not knowing it.

Do a custom build desktop x10000

For 800 you can pretty max out every component.

skylake 6700k
whatever mobo (doesn't matter as long as it's compatible really)
16 gigs ram (32 if you really want to cover yourself)
couple 7200 hd's for bulk storage
250 ssd for os and daw (maybe x2 if you want one for samples)

plus a case/power supply should bring you right around 800 if you spend time ordering from the right places.

I'm going to keep this brief(ish).

So arguably the biggest question producers have when they're learning is "How do I sound like ___ ?" or "How do I make my music sound professional?"

It's like the holy grail of every producer trying to make it and what I now realize was a trap I forced myself into for the last 7 or 8 years. I'm sure we can all relate to spending countless hours reading and watching tutorials only to be bummed out after realizing the track you're working on still doesn't measure up. Eventually I felt like a dog chasing my own tail, growing more and more frustrated with mixes and slowly falling out of love with why I started making music in the first place.

Basically this all leads to early this year, when I finally "broke through" sonically. I felt a huge weight lifted and became painfully aware of how misguided my efforts had been. I listen to all of the artists I obsessed over and no longer have a desire to sound like them. Perfectionism is a huge waste of time. All of the surgical eq cuts I'd do took away everything that gave my songs life. The biggest key that I've learned-and something that ALWAYS gets overlooked by producers-is this

Songwriting is everything

Literally everything.

If the songwriting is inspired and strong, everything else always falls into place. Good songs are still good if the production sucks. When you have a good song, you don't ask "Does this need a pluck?" or "How should I fill out the percussion?" The transitions are already naturally seamless. You don't have to force an anemic intro or outro. It all just works. That one tom hit you battle over keeping in or not? Yeah, your listeners wouldn't even question if you removed the drums entirely. The "perfect" version you have in your head doesn't exist. Whatever you release, no matter what's missing, is the perfect version of that song.

In fact, now that I know how to make pro mix, I find them increasingly boring. Loud, sloppy and over-distorted sound more genuine and desirable to me now. Music is just an emotional expression, and I've learned from my experience that it's not nice. Songwriting is a function of trying to make sense of your life and experiences through audio. Many of those experiences aren't clean; they're not fun. Life is messy. Let the emotion of the song come through. If it doesn't wind up sounding like one of the top 40 producers you look up to it has a better chance of finding an audience anyway. Get your levels right, master it and don't look back.

Now, I'm not here to denounce technique or mastery of engineering, but the truth is those skills will come in time. Understand fundamentally how each of your tools work and find your own way of using them. No truly great songwriter had success escape them because their mix wasn't good enough.

That's all I got for you.
