Whatever makes the hook sound best

107
I just take a long shower and will at least have a good chorus working by the time I'm finished. I learned theory a little late in the game so its not as much an instinct for me as other composers. The best stuff usually pops out of nowhere to be honest.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: How Do People Master Albums?

I would advise against using the whole ozone mastering plugin and instead use the individual izotope plugs as you need them. I found when I had them all there I had bad self control and used way more than I needed to.

Mastering is a hugely different skillset though...

But when I did my last EP i brought all the tracks into one session and went back and forth, listened to the frequency bands and adjusted multibands as needed. It's become more and more subtle with every release.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Why you start producing?

Cause bandmates were too unreliable

No.

Teenagers n stuff have infinite free time I think is the difference.

Though I cut down my work schedule to three days a week to focus on production so I suppose I don't have an excuse either...

I upgraded to a Forte from the 2i2 and I'm super happy with it after some initial driver fiddling. You can get em used for nothing...I think mine was like 230 mint.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing Into A Limiter
« on: May 13, 2016, 12:17:30 am »
At the end of the day, whatever works works, but it's definitely a habit I'm gonna get out of now that I'm learning mastering. I'll still flick a rough mastering chain off and on to check my drum transients and stuff, but it screws with the mix overall too much.

Still keep a stock ableton limiter at 0 on my master to catch any rogue sounds before they blow my monitors though

Just general thoughts as I'm listening through

The chimey lead sound needs to be brought down.
Arp at :35 pulled down as well
Add more content to the higher bass range. I know there's sub there, but any semblance of bass is lost when i switch to my auratone
Same arp I said to pull down in the verse, needs to be brought out more in chorus, gets lost in the saws.
Leads saws disappear at 1:24-1:26. Idk if it's intentional or not
I feel like the snare has too much body on it in the drop, it's competing with the kick a little when theyre both playing together. I'd like to hear a less 909y snare and something that cuts in the highs more.

I like the track sonically and musically, there's just a lot of big sounds happening so you have to be extra vigilant about your mix!

So after producing for five years I feel like I'm finally starting to make some headway. This is the first time I've recorded vocals and everything from scratch though so it's still new ground for me. It'd be cool to get some feedback from you guys

Holy low freqs Batman!

You could definitely pull the mix in a lot, tame the bass. Keep everything more focused. Take a good look at your gain staging and let the right elements sit where they need to. There's some cool ideas for sure though. I'd like to hear it with the mix reigned in
