Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Music Production device "PC/Laptop"
« on: January 11, 2016, 04:45:49 am »
I personally use an old desktop that i've upgraded with more ram, SSD etc. But one thing I learned by accident is that if you have a computer that isn't very powerful that you are forced to

1) be more efficient with bussing, multiple EQ's etc
2) become better at removing things from your song that you might not need.

not to say you should go out and buy a bad computer but its interesting to be in that situation.

also definitely have gaming and music on the same computer.

Some producer said if you can make a track with a hunk of junk, you can make a track with anything.
That being said, if you have the money to buy a good pc, you should.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: [Q] Friend starting

Well he should probably have a basic understanding of music theory and should probably learn an instrument too.

Wouldn't say you'd need to learn an instrument, its helpful but not necessary.

Just tell him to start by making loops of random shit he thinks cool, it will make it easier for him to become more familiar with this daw. Once hes familiar, he can start making his own songs, and then learn mixing and whatnot. There's a lot to learn and starting out can be overwhelming at times.

Good luck! I could never do this because it takes me a month to write a song.

I start with 1 bar and create a beat, and then add percs to spice it up a bit. I'll double that, add some variety and continue until I have 8 bars. Once I have 8 bars, I duplicate it and then either start on a chord progression or the melody. Depending on the type of song, I'll either start with 2 or 4 bars for those things. Then I'll duplicate until 16 bars and start tweaking everything until I have a good drop.

Get my songs out there

Hi folks,

I know everyone has a different workflow regarding automation. But this is the most hindering factor in my workflow and it really ruins my time. Really I am getting now to the point that I want to switch daws just because of the way I use automation in FL..

So I was wondering, how do you guys do it? What are your ways in organizing automation in FL Studio?
With FL 12 comes the link between tracks. You can merge 2-3 tracks from the playlist into a group. If you do so, everytime you use a new track in the playlist for a new instrument, link the one below, and when you'll create an automation it's gonna appear there. (make sure to have no track upper empty.)
It looks like that :

You can see on the left, that there's group of tracks.

What you also can do it, to "lock to content" every track in the playlist (Where there is something). So no automation will be putted where you don't want it.

I do the exact same thing!

People say you should try and pump out as many songs as you can when you're first starting out, and to give yourself a deadline, but that doesn't always work for me. I've been "producing" for 5 years (4 and a half years of just touching ableton/fl once a month/year), so I'm still really new to this stuff. Creating a deadline makes it hard for me to get creative and produce the tracks I like. I don't have a "deadline" but I do have a goal, which is to work X amount of hours or get X amount of X completed by the end of day.
It's also unreasonable for me to set deadlines because I don't have a lot of time to produce. I can't set long deadlines because I don't really know how long it's going to take me because it's mostly dependent on how much time I'll have throughout the month.
There are a lot of pros and cons to deadlines, but in the end it's mostly up to you to decide whether or not they work for you.

You know, there's a lot of times where I catch myself saying "I'm going to be spending a few months on this track", and I keep telling myself to shut the hell up when I say that, because I'll always end up adding incredibly redundant things in my mixes, and I'll add redundant instruments as well.

So, personally deadlines help me, but they are very stressful.

The best thing with deadlines is to find the sweet spot. But, of course it's impossible.

That's also a good point, it keeps you from adding too many things to your track that it starts to sound terrible. I don't really have that issue, but it does help if you do.

Other one probably died lol, an official video list would be dope

Keeping one element carrying over to the next part of the song make it a lot easier to transition.

Yeh we want to keep that kind of thing well separate from the art of making music. That's actually why I wanted to start this forum in the first place

Not to be an ass, but this has been posted in almost all threads about videos related to inspiration.
But this is a really good video, and it's one of the reasons I'm still producing today.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: [Ql Creating (logical) melodies
« on: January 10, 2016, 04:09:01 am »
Hi

I'm currently stuck on making melodies. I manage to make nice sounding chord progressions, but my melodies fail. I am able to make melodies but all of them sound uninteresting and unlogical

Some people advise to start with your bass and drums. This way you can build a certain groove and adapt a melody to it.
However some of my inspiring songs are very simple in that area (sidechained root notes, rides on the kick, off-beat clap).

I'm curious what workflow you all have it comes to this!

Cheers!

Writing a good melody is hard, and it's mostly just trial and error until you get something you like. One thing you can do is start with the rhythm of the melody and then move on to just moving notes up and down until you find something you like.

You need to analyze different tracks in order to know exactly how much is too much, it's more of a feeling than a set way. I personally generally try and add or take out an element every 8 bars, but I can also see someone repeating 16+ bars and keeping it interesting with only automation.
