Not being able to finish a track is completely normal, It's been almost a year since I've finished one, but then again, I didn't produce for 6 of those

At the same price you can get a pair of Yamaha HS7 or even 8. Depends on what you use it for. Yamaha's sound is really cool, it's flat. Which means, if your music sounds good at Yamaha, it will sound good everywhere (almost :)) We're using the previous generation, HS80M. Absolutely satisfied.

You can even notice some old NS10 in a lot of professional studio, most of them are used just to check the sound.

Hope it helps. ;)

I second this! I regret buying my KRKs, I wish I had saved up a bit more $ and bought HS7s or HS8s... Going to sell my KRKs and upgrade soon

If you haven't seen it, here's a cool little video on how NGHTMRE got the metallic-y sounds in Street. (Mostly just cool sample processing, but still awesome)

Madeon and Haywyre both use vocodex if I'm not mistaken, but theres a little know free plugin called the MDA Talkbox which can get you a great vocoder sound. It just requires a bit of channel routing

talkbox is awesome! definitely worth getting, especially since its free

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Method to finding key a song is in

soundcloud track check is a chrome extension that tells you the key and bpm of a track (100% accurate)
This is the easy way, which is what I do, but learning how to do everything by ear would help a lot in the long run...

I used to be like you, I couldn't do much without having a guidebook to follow, but now I've figured out what kind of things I want in my songs. It's not always instantaneous, there's a lot of experimentation going on, but I found that listening to different types of music always helps, like REALLY listening to it. I'm not the best at arrangements either, but I found that creating your own song on top of an acapella always helps because you're forced to follow the flow of the vocals. Once you get good at doing that, you can start to make your own arrangements. Every aspect of production is hard, and there are so many different things you need to learn in order to become good at it. Just focus on one aspect at a time, don't be afraid of copying other song's progressions while you're starting off.

I just got krk 5's because I don't like having headphones on for long periods of time. If you're fine with wearing headphones all day, then put off buying the monitors until you can treat your room.
