Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Your inspiration for your name

One day, I was bored at work and started contemplating the idea of electronic music being often described as "cold", which got me thinking about "frozen music", and boom, I came up with cryophonik.

Staying in my comfort zone.  I tend to go on autopilot and stick with what I'm confident will work, rather than experimenting.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: How do you define overproducing?
« on: February 05, 2016, 11:38:33 pm »
Yes, I think that this problem is all too common with beginning producers (and even some very experienced ones) who spend way too much time trying make their mix sound "pro", when the 7-minute song itself has nothing musically interesting in it to keep my attention for more than 20 seconds.  Songs that go nowhere, have no melody, and, hell, often not even a chord change, but, the mix actually sounds pretty good - I find this to be the case more often than not on production forums.  IMO, the primary purpose of the production part of music-making is to bring out the musical ideas, but too many people think that they can get away with skipping the hard part of creating great musical ideas simply by having a stellar production.  IOW, yes, you certainly can polish a musical turd, but it just leaves you with a shinier (overproduced) turd.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: "Best" cheap monitoring speakers?

IMO, you're not going to find a better value than JBL LSR305s.  Read the reviews, then buy a pair.  They're so good and cheap that I bought a pair as a second reference system.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Forcing Yourself To Produce
« on: January 29, 2016, 08:01:56 pm »
I don't think it's a bad thing to try to force productivity, as long as it's within a reasonable limit.  Sometimes, forcing it a bit can result in something inspirational, but knowing when to say when and finding something more productive to do (or less productive, like catching up on sleep) is often the better option.

To me, music is a hobby. If I would force myself, it wouldn't feel fun anymore.

Yeah, same here.  That's one of the reasons I never wanted to make a career out of it.  It's nice knowing that I can make music when I feel like, and do something completely different when I don't.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Blue II Synthesiser
« on: January 29, 2016, 08:11:32 am »
I've owned it since the original Blue was released and it's one of my favorite synths of all time, hardware or software. It's a deep hybrid synth with incredible range.

Sound Design / Re: Snares
« on: January 27, 2016, 10:27:31 pm »
I primarily use/layer samples, unless I'm using a dedicated drum synth, like Drumazon, Nepheton, Tremor, etc.  I never use a regular synth to synthesize my own snares or other drums - not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that my own tendency is to avoid reinventing the wheel.

Wave Alchemy is my favorite.  Lots of free sample packs there to try/use before you buy.

On paper, Sylenth is pretty limited compared to most of the other synths mentioned here, in terms of features.  But, it makes up for that by having a huge sweet spot and a great overall sound.  I personally find it great for many things, but too limited to be my go-to or only synth.

FWIW, I'd recommend looking at U-he Hive for a deeper alternative to Sylenth.  If you followed its development over on KVR over the past few years, you'd see that Urs pretty much designed it to cover Sylenth's range and to pick up where it left off.

Listen to cryophonik. He knows what he's talking about.

So does Lydian!  8)

The thing with theory is that there are usually many ways to think about it, so hearing from different perspectives can be good, either too reinforce it, or to help find those lightbulb moments.
