Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Thinking of purchasing Spire...

I've never used Sylenth. Well I've dabbled to see what its about but I just didn't like it that much. I just found Massive a little more user friendly.

As far as the nice and warm sound, I would say yes, but you can achieve that by doing other things too. Might be wise to try a demo of Spire first before dropping the cash on it. I don't really have any cons on it right now, but like I said I've only had it for a few months. I'm still in that loving stage at the moment.

I just started using Spire a few months ago. Im liking it a lot. I still use Massive but I've shifted more towards Spire. I use it mostly for bass and pads right now.

Hey guys,

I was wondering the right technique to properly sound treat a room. I have two JBL Studio monitors and a dorm room, whats the best i can do?

Anyway, if you are on a tight budget, just place basstraps in the corners & panel on the reflection points. This will help already a lot.

Edit: Don't fall for the egg foam stuff and put your walls full with them as they really don't do anything.. go for panels. ;-)

What about the Diamond 12x12 panels? Are they useless like the egg foam?
I've seen 12 packs of the 3" for like $25. Fairly cheap but if they are useless then I might hold off.

From my experience, which involved buying budget speakers only to replace them within that year, you will need better monitors.

I had some Alesis Elevate 5s cus they were cheap. Sounded great, or so I thought at the time. Since ive upgraded to JBL LSR305s, Im hearing things way better. The bass is way more accurate now. And I actually found my pair on Amazon for $200 new. That should fit into the budget you laid out.

Now depending on your setup and room, maybe the LSR308s are better since they would be 8" vs 5" woofer. I've also heard great things about yamaha. Never had them myself but lots of people love them.

What about the Rokits KRK RP5G3 Rokit 5 Generation Monitor - Pair? Which is is better or is there another brand that would be good if not better?

Ive never had the Rokits so I cant really say. Some people think they are too bassy.

The template will help immediately. Less time building the same things you would put on every track. More time to get creative.

IMO, you're not going to find a better value than JBL LSR305s.  Read the reviews, then buy a pair.  They're so good and cheap that I bought a pair as a second reference system.

Boom! Love my JBLs! Night and day difference from my old speakers. I hear things more accurately now. Also got my pair off Amazon for $200 new!

This may help. Personally I would say save up and spend a little more but we all have our budgets. Hope this helps.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixdown Question (Wrecking my brain over this!)

Im an ableton user so Im not sure if this will work in FL. Seems like it should in my head though. And this will be limited by your CPU limitations.

Try to copy and paste the channel/track you need to bounce into a free and clear FL project with the effects on them. Then render it as a WAV. Then do this for each one you need to bounce. It will take some time, but it should work.

Edit: What Midge said. ^^^

I have to shamefully admit it has been moreless 8 years. :) I really struggle with fear of putting out something I wouldn't like later. ...so after all that time my HDD is FUULLLLL of ideas in different stages I'm just not sure about. Some just loops, some structured tracks. I can find myself working on a single track for months without getting satisfied with it. By some measures that probably makes me a bad producer, but hey, it's about the fun, right? :) Also true, when I look back, there certainly is some improvement, so who knows. May be future in this might get somehow bright actually. :)

Dude it takes me at least a month to finish a track. It doesn't mean you are bad. We just aren't as fast as others. Plus for me I work a full time job, so there is only so much time for music.

Started taking music seriously about 3 years ago. Wanted to DJ at first about 6 years ago but found that I liked making remixes more. Which then led to producing.

So 3 years ago it was all about this sample pack and that sample pack to make music. Mainly because I had no musical background and I had to teach myself. That was an easy way to work on song arrangements. When I look back at the "tracks" I completed, they weren't very good. Drums were weak. Sound was muddy and overall it was just crap. 3 years later its all about making my own MIDI, sounds, and chord progressions. As well as drums too. Now I focus on making everything from scratch and just focusing on better sound overall. Which has led to two signed tracks last year. That ultimately let me know that I was progressing at my craft.

But just like Xan said, lots of hard work, time and money. Learn as much as you can and practice. With time you will or should get better.

As for your road blocks, maybe try out a site like blend.io. On blend you can collab with people. So you can open up your project to others and let them add to it. In return it may open up some future ideas for you. Maybe finish those tracks you never did.

Another tip I read once was to finish your project even if its crap. That way you get used to the process of finishing tracks. So finish them up just for the sake of finishing them and then learn from that on future projects.

Honestly the best names are the ones you aren't quite sure how to say. It keeps people talking about it too.
Of course you can always go simple, That Guy Kevin.
Or you can do the first letter flip thing. I.E. Mord Fustang, Com Truise, ect.

I myself just go by Gabe D. I don't think anyone is using Kevin S so that may be an option. Although there is nothing wrong with Kevin Seguin.

Sound Design / Re: Snares

I spent hours one day going through all my sample packs and made racks for Kicks, Snares, Claps, ect. I realized that I kept using certain ones and so I simplified my process. So I now have all those racks on my template ready to do.

I've tried using just different drum racks in ableton, but can't seem to get them to sound that great yet.

"We are not all the same."  +1,000. I couldn't agree more.

When I say it's in my hands I don't mean my hands are literally thinking and feeling emotions. I mean that the muscles in my hands are accustomed to moving in a way that creates the effect I want, even if I'm not literally feeling that way. That's what happens when you practice. This same kind of muscle memory, derived from practice, can be applied to creative processes.

Everyone's not the same so your mileage may vary, but practice will make it better and easier, for everyone, hands down.
[/quote]

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not as "skilled" in the hands area so I'm not used to that creative process just yet. But I totally get what you are saying now. I wish I could play piano or guitar but I'm a late starter. Just started producing 3 years ago.
