One tip I would give is to try some Parallel Compression on the drums. Certain plugins can help with that or you can search for some videos depending on what DAW you are using. You can actually use this method on more than drums. Play around with it a little bit and see what you come up with.

I usually don't listen after the track is done. Maybe for like a week but that's about it. I too am pretty tired of it and on to the next project.
Now it is always good to go back and listen. You might learn a few things or see how you used to do things wrong.
And I double what Marrow says. You must listen to others. 1. for inspiration or ideas. 2. to reference your own tracks to.

Thanks for the input. I think you may be right about the ears. I took a day off and came back to it. Its not as far off as I originally thought. At first they sounded so different, but with fresh ears it wasn't so bad. I also EQ'd a little more to take out certain freqs which seemed to have helped.

I would keep working on it. Just need to clean some things up in my opinion.
With house music, imo, the high end drums should stand out a little more. The kick seemed ok to me. The hi hats could be a little more crisp and maybe a little louder. Not much louder though. The clap seems a little flat too. Like when the hi hats come in, they blend in too much with the clap. Those are my suggestions. Hope they help.

Mixing/Mastering / Stereo vs Mono Sound Quality

Disclaimer: When I produce, I mix as I go.
Sometimes I have a clean sound on Stereo and when I change to Mono it sounds the same. Perfect. However, on some tracks when I change to Mono they don't sound as good. Flat and dull or not as bright.
Obviously there is something I'm doing wrong, but I can't figure it out. I tend to use reverb on all productions on various tracks. I don't usually do any extreme panning L to R except for on some drum parts. I have also looked at previous tracks that sound fine on mono and tried to compare them to the track I'm working on, but can't really see my mistake.
Does anyone have any tips or best practices to find my culprit?

Serum is good like they say. I tend to use Spire and Serum lately. Spire has replaced Massive for me.

I do have a folder of tens of thousands of songs in midi that I like skimming through for progressions when I'm feeling uninspired.
Well like I said, I would use it as a way to spark an idea or unblock the block.
I would hope that the person wouldn't go with the progression that it applies.

For me, making house music, loops are essential I guess. I don't hear people say get out of that loop, but where I do hear this comment is on my drums. My drums seem to be repetitive in certain parts. At least in the main verse of the song. The last comment I got was, the drums seem a little repetitive but the other part of the song really carries the track.

Are you all against apps like Cthulhu and Odesi?
Every time I see someone mention writers or producer block, I cant help but think of these programs. I feel like it can help get past that block and produce results. Even if the results turn out to be nothing, it could spark another idea for the future. I feel like for me to get past that block, I need to be working. Either playing with a new plugin or just start trying new things.

« on: June 21, 2016, 09:07:05 pm »I don't do this for all remixes, but I like to make a draft of the remix without even listening to the original track, that way I can make something without subconsciously referencing the track I'm remixing.
Exactly what I like to do. Sometimes I will listen to the original briefly just to make sure mine isn't sounding too similar.
And I don't know about you all, but if there are no midi files in the remix pack, I don't touch it. I have to have the midi files for a remix. Im not to fond of the wav to midi converters.

I usually stick to some sort of house music. Most of it tends to be at 110 - 120 bpm though. So I call it Chill House.
