R&A Graveyard / Re: "Finished Tracks" Section Sucks rn

Question for the Point System: What about guys like me?

I have not been to school for music, so I dont know all the technical terms to the T. There may be times where I want to leave feedback but dont have confidence in the feedback Im giving since I have limited knowledge in production. But if I want to get feedback on what Im making, then Im going to have to leave feedback. I feel like my feedback may come across as generic or not very good in general. So I would fear that the moderator would remove my feedback and therefore I never get to post anything for review because my feedback score is low.

Just wanted to throw that out there. Not sure if you all have covered it yet or not.

Yeah this came up already, here's what I replied:

In the last track I posted I asked the forum to get feedback on my sound design and arrangement, as well as how the track made them feel. If you don't have whole lot of experience with music, then at the very least you're a human with emotions. Emotional feedback is probably just as important as any technical feedback. As long as you're sincere and openly show that you're trying to give quality feedback, I don't think there should be a problem.

Does that make sense?

Thank you Sleepy! Makes perfect sense. I can definitely do that.

R&A Graveyard / Thoughts on a "Deals Section" ?
« on: January 15, 2016, 12:01:44 am »
I'm sure many of us are on budgets and there are random deals on equipment all the time. Figured it would be good to have a deals section to help us all save money on upgrading or buying new equipment. This could also lead into a For Sale section as well, but not sure how many feel about that.

Just my 2 cents.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: melody questions

Buy a MIDI pack with melodies of the genre you like to make. Then use them to learn the progressions and all that.

I recently paid for the program Odesi by Mixed In Key. For a beginner, it could be a good tool to help make melodies over certain chord progressions.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Purchasing MIDI only sound packs

Here is my take. They make them for us to use them. What you will find is that other producers use them too. Hell, I've even had two tracks signed to a label that had MIDI files that I bought and tweaked.

I use the MIDI files as a starting point. Then I end up moving things around once in ableton. Don't look at it as cheating. I don't.

I recently got Spire as well and I'm loving it! Massive has been put on the back burner. lol

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: BEHRINGER TRUTH B2031A crap or good?
« on: January 13, 2016, 06:50:23 pm »
I personally try to stay away from Behringer products. With that said, for $199, if you do some digging you can find better speakers. For example, I just got the JBL LSR305s for $200, for the pair. I know the behringers are 8" but you get what you pay for. I went for a smaller speaker to have better quality.

Ive been using the Tascam US4x4 for about a year now. No issues so far. I kinda took a chance on it and have been happy so far.

P.S. I switched from the NI Komplete Audio 6. It was giving me issues.

Does this kind of miss the whole point of producing your own music? Seems a little like painting by numbers if you get my point.

Although saying that looks like a useful tool for newbs like me to get their head around chords progressions etc  ;)

Im using it more as a starting point. Ive made a few chord progressions so far and once I get the MIDI file into Ableton I usually change some of it up. Could be helpful if you hit that producer wall.

And I agree with another user, it needs a trial version. However for me, $49 wasn't a whole lot of money for what I feel I can learn from it. Remember, I've never taken music lessons or anything so, from my perspective its cheap.

Thx for all input.

I think the video was just showing us something basic and popular. To me it seems like there are a ton of possibilities, but im also a beginner in this category. I agree this wont be something I will use further down the road, but for now I think it will help me. Appreciate the review. Thanks

I have recently purchased Odesi by Mixed In Key to help me learn chord progressions better. I've never had schooling for music or anything so I'm thinking this will help.

I was curious what others, maybe more experienced users, think about it. I like how easy and quick it is to bounce something down to MIDI and throw it in my DAW.

Post your likes and dislikes please. Thanks.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: What is your DAW template?
« on: January 08, 2016, 11:43:08 pm »
I start blank, I feel like having a set template kind of limits my creativity. Also, since I'm still pretty new to this, there are still a lot of different ways I can approach things. My goal is not to pump out tracks every day/week, so having a template doesn't really do much for me.

I used to be like that and after a while I got tired of adding the same things over and over. So I made a template based on the fact that it is easier to delete something than it is to find and add it. And the flip side of your "limits to creativity", is that you could lose your creativity if you have to add certain things to your project to get to that certain creativity point. Just my 2 cents.
