Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: [Q] Making bass lines
« on: March 29, 2016, 11:39:35 pm »
To add to Mussar,
You can also look at bass line midi files too. Study them and then compare them to the notes you take down from listening to other tracks. Maybe you find a midi file close to what you like and you can play around with it to see what works and what doesn't.

So this really reminds me of Odesi by Mixed In Key. Great tool for understanding chord progressions if you are a "visual" learner. For me, I'm not that great with reading things I don't fully understand.

Definitely would look at this as tool, not cheating. I think this can help when you hit that inevitable producer/writers block.

Well, if you are using ableton you can use the simple Utility rack. I know you said something with flexibility, but this tool gets the job done for me. I use it on my bass, kick, and snare.

So Im on PC, laptop to be exact, and I too have been deciding on this. My result . . . .

Instead of buying a $1200+ laptop, I spent $185 and got a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD and 16gb G.Skill Ripjaws RAM.

From what I know, the 16gb of RAM will help, but the SSD is gonna make all the difference. I figured it was smarter to try this cheap upgrade first and then go from there. Hopefully this will solve my issues and I'll save myself a grand.

I wouldnt do soundcloud links unless they request soundcloud links. An email is a little more professional imo. And its a good idea to give them a brief description too. And not in the subject. Dont be that guy.

A week?? Hell I'm lucky if its a month.

Im too picky to finish a track in a week. I usually step away from a project for a week and go back to it to see if its still sounds as good as I thought.

Now maybe if I was able to do music 24/7 I could, but not with a 40 hr a week job.

Might need to upload a copy so we can hear it and better assist.

Me personally, I always mono my kick, snare, and bass. Others may do it differently but it has helped my productions.

As for your layers, you may have some frequencies that are fighting each other. You should get the Seven Phases Spectrum Analyzer (free), if you already dont have an analyzer, to see the frequencies for each track. See if any of them are clashing or fighting for the same frequencies.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing Deep house/G House/Future House

So I'm not an expert on the Hz for bass house or Hz in general, but I would tend to think the genre wouldn't matter. If you need something more bassy, you adjust or EQ it to where you need it.

As for what should be loudest in the mix, I would say to listen to some other bass house songs you like and determine what they made stand out. Some people might say the drums and others may say the bass. Me personally, in house music the drums should be pretty prominent as they drive the song.

Not sure this will help you, but if anything it got you a bump. Maybe someone else can shine some light on this for you.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mastering engineers?
« on: March 01, 2016, 06:29:58 pm »
I always prepare mine to send off for mastering. Ive tried to master myself and Im just not quite there. Plus I lack some essential equipment such as a sub since Im in an apartment. I figure they can do a better job, so I just focus on setting the engineer up for success.

Due to work I need to be pretty mobile ... so 2.6GHz quadcore i7 MSI laptop, 16GB Ram, little Focusrite interface. ...and I'm good. :)

Hows that MSI working out for you? Thinking about going all in and buying one in the next couple months.

Might be a secret weapon, not sure.

To make that female voice sound like a deep male voice, Elastique Pitch plugin.

I've tried to transpose vocals and things like that but cant ever seem to get it to sound good. And Elastique Pitch doesnt work on every vocal but its simple to use and can get the job done.

Kind of surprised to see you say it starts to get choppy on you with even smaller projects, since you're on AMD processor that's more powerful than mine. Do you do anything to maximize your processing power during a session?
There isn't usually too much happening in my projects since i'm still learning, maybe 20 or 30 layers with 3-4 Sylenth1, some automations and loads of effects in the mixer from eq to reverb and more. A friend told me that it might be a problem in the installation of the drivers so i'll try installing everything again.

Kinda late here, but FYI, running 20-30 "layers" or tracks on MIDI will kill the CPU. Bounce those to audio to free up CPU on your current system.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mastering with the kick near 0 dB
« on: February 19, 2016, 07:37:27 pm »
Try this.

Listen on the lowest of volumes. So turn you master volume all the way down and make it where you can barely hear it. If the Kick is standing out over everything else, lower the Kick db.

Setting everything at whatever db is more of a starting point imo. I have all mine set at -10db but they always change.

Edit: And like Kenny said, its all relative to what you want to produce.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing for crappy speakers
« on: February 18, 2016, 07:10:27 pm »
I went to Icon Collective right as Jauz was starting to blow up and I saw the dude producing on apple headphones all the time, and I know for a fact he did most of his mixing down on either apple headphones or his laptop speakers. Most of the people that are going to be listening to your music are either going to be listening to it on apple headphones or their laptop speakers anyways. Think about it. If your shit is bangin through laptop speakers and apple headphones, chances are it is going to sound pretty good on monitors. Just listen to your mix on as many different speakers as possible. I always listen to my music on my rokits, my laptop speakers, my apple headphones, AND my car stereo system. If it sounds good on all of them, that's when I know I'm set. trust me you don't need fancy studio monitors to get a clean mix down. When it comes to your low end, that's when a nice set of speakers come in handy, but if your car has a sub woofer and you know it pretty well you can definitely get by on just listening to your low end in your car

I went to an ableton class last night and Sage Armstrong was the producer/dj. He also does this. He said the exact same thing. So he will use his laptop speakers and see if he can get the bass sounding good on that because it will sound better on good speakers.

And the listen to it on different speakers is a great tip. It should sound good on all systems.
