Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Converse rubber tracks (free samples!)
« on: March 08, 2016, 05:46:30 am »
Just found this amazing royalty-free sample library of all kinds of studio recordings:
https://www.conversesamplelibrary.com/

By a quick glance there are some great vocals, basses, saxes, and drums there.

...but why the hell I feel this? I'm happy for those guys and for the music they are able to make. It's awesome. I hate selfish thinking and I'm not in this for fame or money. Yet these thoughts appeared and bugged me for few days. I'm confused.

Here are my two euro cents: it's easy to underestimate your own skills when you're at a high skill level (the Dunning-Kruger effect). On the other hand, it's also very easy to overestimate the skills of others compared to yours. When you think about your skills, you weigh in both what you can do and what you can't. But from others you only hear what they are good at, not their limitations, so you have a biased view.

As a personal anecdote, I have definitely been there, mostly regarding playing the guitar. Whenever I meet a guy who can play jazz, I feel like I suck, because I just can't play jazz at all. But the truth is, I'm pretty good at playing metal, and chances are that that person would feel the same way if they heard me play, just because they don't know how to play metal!

Step two - After you take said walk, cook up some food - not sure about you but I find standing over a hot stove and enjoying a good meal is as calming as meditation (maybe I'm just weird)

As a non-native English speaker, "standing over a hot stove" sounded at first like a pretty hardcore way to calm down :D

Step three - Make some coffee/espresso (drink that strong stuff) and actively search for the shittiest, poorly written and produced music you can find... think about why you hate it. This should both help your diminishing ego, and teach you a lesson on what not to do with your music

This is the sort of "unpopular opinion" I can get behind. What makes me feel particularly warm and fuzzy inside is when I find flaws or imperfections in popular tracks.

And for automating volume, you may want to slap a gain plugin as the last insert on your layer, and automate that instead of faders. That way you avoid some headaches when mixing down.

I've seen the Sonic Academy KICK recommended a lot here: https://www.sonicacademy.com/products/kick/
And the UI does seem super intuitive compared to the FL studio kick synth for example. Haven't tried it though, because they don't offer a demo.

This really interests me. How does Paulstretch stretch samples without creating artefacts?

I found this: https://github.com/paulnasca/paulstretch_python/blob/master/paulstretch_steps.png

So looks like it randomizes the phases of the individual frequency components for each small block, and then combines the blocks at longer intervals. I guess the effect is that any transients in the blocks are lost, which makes the transitions smooth, but the frequency content is the same.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Most Awkward Set of Influences

I'm not an anime fan, but I used to watch Silver Fang as a kid and its soundtrack left a pretty lasting effect on me. This is still my yardstick for sadness in a song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HamWMR2f52s

Another awkward one would be the Rocky IV soundtrack by Vince DiCola.

At least with Serum it's pretty easy to remove a harmonic as well, using a notch filter, you just have to calibrate the keymapping correctly. Might be useful for removing those major thirds from e.g. FM sounds, which become really dissonant when playing chords. Although at some point you have to ask yourself if you'd be better off with additive synthesis :)

Quality over quantity. All of his shit sounds the same. It's easy to make a bunch of tracks when you follow a formula. The dedication is admirable but I'm not impressed from an artistic, creative standpoint.

I agree that obsessing about the number of unreleased tracks is sort of pointless; after all, there is a reason he's never released them. It's still a feat, but the released tracks are what matter.

But dude, you must be joking. There's no way you can listen through Adventure and claim that everything sounds the same. Madeon is one of the most versatile EDM songwriters I have encountered.

I thought this discussion was exactly about Avicii and his style.

Once again, my first post was about the potential of abuse when it comes people's heritage. This about traditional folk music and the fusion of a modern context. Not popular music, you people can't seem to discern the difference between the two.

Yet you still refuse to give an actual definition of what "abuse" is in this context.

I highly doubt mozart went on over to the orientals and just hardly listened before coming up with his version of their music.

From what I understand, "Alla turca" was the "Hey brother" of its day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_music_(style)
Composers added Turkish-sounding percussion to their works because that was what people wanted to hear.

Like it's cool that people are experimenting, it's just kind of a touchy subject when you want to use other people's culture at their expense if you don't actually know how to be utilize those influences.

This is exactly what I hoped you'd explain! Why is it at their expense? What do the people from the US lose when Avicii decides to write a house-country tune?

I find it hard to think how anyone would be insulted by the Avicii track. Rednex, yes, it's obvious, but that was a joke.

This kind of "bastardizing" has been done forever in music. Western composers like Mozart were influenced by oriental music and instruments, and included elements of them in the pop music of their time. To me, this tells that people are inspired by folk music, nothing more. Everything is a remix; being inspired by something doesn't take away value from that thing.

This genre emerges from Sweden every couple of decades: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcDy8HEg1QY

Strict Counterpoint is not the universal music law!And thats coming from someone who absolutely LOVES to listen and writes counterpoint music,Bach,Fugues and stuff.

But nobody has ever claimed that, not even in the Baroque! It's just a pedagogic tool. Bach's fugues do not follow Strict Counterpoint.
