Mixing/Mastering / Re: Reverb on a kick?
« on: February 18, 2016, 12:54:07 pm »
You can also hear reverb on many of Deadmau5' kicks, although usually it's shorter. And I remember Steve Duda mentioning in a video that dubstep producers like to use reverb to make a punchy kick, in contrast to boosting the bass frequencies. I never thought about automating it, that's a cool idea.

Drop is cool. The mix is crispy but doesn't fatigue my ears, so I like it.

At around 1:01 and repeating, there's this short chopped chord that, IMHO, doesn't fit there at all. It's just too weird for the musical context, and on the first listen it sounded like there was a literal glitch in the track.

The buildup to the drop at 3:15 could be stronger. Why no snare roll?

Don't hear any problems with the groove anymore. Nice progress!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing your tune as you go
« on: February 17, 2016, 03:46:29 pm »
I prefer to write my music in the DAW, and to me it's important that it sounds as good as possible when I'm playing it back, otherwise I might lose my faith in the whole thing. So I tend to mix as I go, but getting those notes in there is always a priority.

Gorgeous atmosphere. My only criticisms are on the middle section:

- timing in the lead instrument sounds off, especially in the beginning
- that same instrument is also a bit dull sound-wise, maybe it needs more highs just to stand out as a solo instrument. And to me it sounds like it should be panned to the left for balance.
- clap sounds out of place with no reverb on it

Sound Design / Re: Side-chaining Volume question

Hmm. Another thing is, how long is the kick sample you are using as the key? If the threshold is really low and the sample is very long, then the release doesn't even need to be long for this to happen.

Sounds like the release in your compressor is too long. The compressor doesn't have time to return the signal to its normal level before the kick hits again, except when you skip a beat with the kick.

E: So to add to this, play with the threshold and compression ratio to get the rhythm you want.

WIPs / Re: RudeManners - PUG (Dubstep, Trap)
« on: February 16, 2016, 06:21:35 am »
Overall, sounds great.

First listen comments from someone who doesn't listen to trap:
- Something about that hat entering at 0:06 is a bit disturbing. Maybe too much low end?
- I feel like that growl that plays at 2:22 should be centered, or then alternate between the sides. At least on my headphones I wish it would do stuff to my right ear too.
- The pad at 2:32 felt out of place. It's too quiet or too clean or something.
- Pugs are great

E:a word

Thanks for the feedback! I think I'll have to bring a mau5track to reference with in this project.

- I'd go even further with cutoff automation on that stab. + wet it in reverb a bit.
OK, I'll try that. My problem has been that the stab sounds kind of dull and boxy with the cutoff set low, and I'm not sure how to fix that. Maybe a reference track will help.

- I think it needs some atmospheres or drones. ...in mau5e's manner may be. :)
I have been thinking about this, but thus far I've been too lazy to find samples/learn how to use those. Will help to make the intro more interesting for sure.

- Drops might benefit from a bit more percussion.
What kind of percussion did you have in mind? I kind of felt that the basses and synths were enough for percussive elements especially in the first drop, so I never even considered anything but the basic drums.

- That beak down neeeeeds some heavily reverbed pads. :)
Roger. I'm also now thinking to make the kick "booms" bigger. The only problem is that I'm running out of memory with this project (last one I'll do with a 32 bit daw), so need to start bouncing some stuff if I'm going to add any instruments.

Fun stuff! I think one thing that's killing the groove in the latter half is the sidechaining, the release is too slow. As for where to go, if I was writing this, I might try to use the saw pluck as a lead in the breakdown/buildup.

Hi,

So I wanted to make a Deadmau5-style chill house track but things got a bit out of hand. I'd appreciate any feedback on sounds, writing and mixdown. In particular, does this make you move at all? Is there something that is super awkward (or is there anything that is not :D)? Also, do you think it's a good idea to end the track like this, or does it need an outro?

OK this is getting a bit off-topic but I'll respond here anyway (maybe this info could be stickied if it works). The result should look something like this: https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/241320014?secret_token=s-82eRf , and that should be put inside the forum's soundcloud tags. Funny if it doesn't work, worked for me a month ago! :/

WIPs / Re: Melodic breakbeat mixed with chillstep WIP
« on: February 11, 2016, 04:59:56 pm »
Should have been more specific, I didn't mean to imply that this sounds dated or anything. With the 90s comment I was referring to something like HIM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPrKLqNAsSY :D. They have somewhat similar melancholy leads in their songs.

And by escalation I just meant that the melody itself could be capitalized a bit more, but I also get the stylistic choice to keep it laid-back. Another idea would be to add a higher-pitch counter-melody when the chorus repeats in the end, just to build it up a bit and keep it interesting. Or you can go the double-time glitch route...

I'm just baffled you don't have more followers! You have a great style, and the mix is pleasant to the ear, at least on my PortaPros. The chorus of this track takes me to the 90's in a positive way. Some comments:

I also feel that the growl bass is lacking some "bite". I'm not sure how to achieve this, though, so please share if you have an idea :D The other, KOAN sound -like wobble fill could also be more present.

In the second chorus, it might be cool to hear the melody taken to more epic proportions, like an octave up and longer notes in the ends of phrases maybe.
