Thanks guys :) Yeah Daft Punk, Justice and of course Madeon are the biggest inspirations for the sound I'm after. And I'm probably going to edit the vocal solo quite heavily based on some other comments, might experiment with that vocoder idea, thanks for the suggestion!

Great start, I really dig the chord progression, and the space you create in the intro. The pump/sidechain sounds a bit "wobbly", I'd suggest using a really short trigger sample to control it if you don't already.

Why do you guys assume that OP is going to use this for mastering?

The Noise OSC has huge potential for making all kinds of organic and atmospheric sounds. For example, load something like a vocal sample as noise, turn the pitch down, and play with the noise FM on an oscillator. And by pitching a white noise sample down, you can use noise FM for subtle random pitch modulation (although I guess the chaos modulation sources would do this as well).

There's a nice list in the end of this article: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1994_articles/nov94/3dmixing.html

Most things have been mentioned here already, but one interesting point was that you should use a narrow reverb instead of a wide one. Which makes sense, because if the sound source is really far, all the sound waves come from the same direction.

Multiband compressors often have this kind of functionality built in, like Maximus in FL studio if you use that.  Here's one freebie: http://www.gvst.co.uk/gmulti.htm
I'm not sure but I would guess that they use M/S processing behind the scenes, does anyone know better?

Whoooaaa very nice  8) when that bassline comes back in around 1:45 I definitely felt an amazing build of energy. This seems very much like something mat zo would put out. Lots of respect for this one!

Well, that is about as good as compliments get, thanks :D And I did get inspired to do that filter house buildup from Mat's Soul Food.

One piece of advice: There is definitely some pretty nasty clipping on your opening piece with the intermittent kicks. I would also think about adding some subtle effects to build into :30 seconds for the sake of making the transition a bit smoother.

Damn, I was expecting this... I actually sidechained the kick to a waveshaper on the synth bus, just to give it that feeling that things are about to break :D Maybe I have to re-evaluate that decision... You're right about the buildup, I'll have to rethink it.

Hi,

A stylish track, the chord progression and melody are nice. I would have loved to hear some variation in the music though, like another chord progression in the breakdown.

In the breakdown (the part starting from around 0:57), the "boom" and the bass seem to clash, making the low end messy.

The last buildup around 3:00 isn't super effective for me, I think because the kick slows down while the snare speeds up. That sums to no change, right?  ;D

^ Yeah I agree with the general principle that mixing should be mostly adjusting faders and panning. I like Farley's point that complicated processing in this stage should be mostly about fixing problems.

It's just that especially in electronic music mixing becomes intertwined with "choosing the sound source", in which there's absolutely no reason not to use those "fancy" techniques that RLL was suggesting. That's why I like Patcher in FL studio, I can do all the crazy processing within that, and then behave like a responsible adult with the mixer.

Gorgeous sounds in the intro. The drop is cacophonous, sounds like multiple songs in different keys playing at the same time. The breakdown again sounds great. So I'm really confused about this, it sounds really beautiful and horrible at the same time  ;D :-[

I'm not that familiar with trance, but sounds like you're on the right track. The melody works, although it's nothing really memorable, and the groove is there. The mix sounds kind of thin, too much stuff in the high end. And to me, the lead in the beginning sounds a bit annoying, reminds me of a fly or a mosquito! Might be related to the ear fatigue from the overall mix though.

Hi,

I would appreciate any comments on this new track I'm working on. I think I'm pretty close to being done with it, apart from some polishing, so I would love to know if there's something that sounds off, or if something's missing that the track would really benefit from.

I feel like with I finally nailed the sort of style I've been after with this one. Not going to deny certain French influences!

I'm getting kind of confused about this whole layering business, I guess it's the terminology as Marrow was pointing out. I kind of agree with you guys that you should be able to create a good mix with just levels, EQ and compression. But on the other hand, in my opinion, in sound design anything goes; you probably do much uglier things to your sound in a synth than you do with a little multiband and reverb. The question being begged is then, where do you draw the line between sound design and mixing?

That Noisia vid is just amazing.

I could choose any of SeamlessR's videos, but this one made something click for me regarding sound design: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZXsvZEgrgI&list=PLEC1FFC318383DAE0&index=20

The first thing, which is present is in all of his tuts of course, is how frigging powerful Patcher (or any modular environment really) is for sound design workflow. Another is the idea of using bandpasses to do frequency splitting, and then modulating the cutoffs of those for creating interesting movement. Probably nothing new to most people, but I find this a handy pattern that you can apply to anything, not just sick neuro basses.

But the truth is, I'm pretty good at playing metal, and chances are that that person would feel the same way if they heard me play, just because they don't know how to play metal!

Do you even "djent" tho?  :D

When I say "play metal", I mean this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a_fW7I1D6A
