Very unique. Kick gets lost in the mix. Try using a multiband compressor and boost the mids and highs.

Good start. Feels empty though. The bass sound is also too bland. Using a white noise with it and some light distortion would help. Also sounds like its 1 or 2 wavetables going. Try using more and doing more with layering? It's got a solid start.

WIPs / Decypher - Future/Trance/Electro
« on: March 31, 2016, 07:58:16 am »
New track I'm working on that will eventually be future/trance with bits of electro.

Enjoy and feedback is appreciated!

Don't critique the master as it's just preliminary. Only did a baseline on most things. Nothing detailed done at all!

^ that is an important thing in mastering. So many people forget that the human ear hears different frequencies in different volumes. Master accordingly!

If you have an eq that can do left/right eq'ing that also is a HUGE thing to not lose certain sounds or you drums in a mixdown.

If you want any 1 on 1 help, more info, or tips, feel free to message me and we can skype or I can take a look at the FLP if you use FL and help you learn!

Gramatik comes to mind, so does GRiZ and The Floozies, but those acts lean more on the funky side, whereas I've always associated Oliver with more a disco and 80s feel, similar though. Another one would be Madeon, I love Oliver's remix of Madeon's "You're On" (https://soundcloud.com/madeon/youre-on-ft-kyan-oliver-remix). Also some of Mat Zo's more funky/disco-y music, AND Lemaitre too!

I looooovvvvvveeeeee Oliver though, definitely one my favorite groups out there, wish more people were aware of them (or at least where I'm from hah). It took me a little bit to think of something similar, because Oliver has such a distinct sound, that aspect of their music is something any producer should aspire to, imo!

Here are some links from the aforementioned artists:

Also I just discovered Fred Falke he has an 80s vibe to him. Ranging from house to funk to others. Check him out!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Empty Space
« on: March 03, 2016, 03:34:53 pm »
I think there is a problem arising with producers nowadays where they think empty space is a bad thing. It truly truly isn't. Empty space is a beautiful thing. You don't want your sound to be so full all the time. Space adds dynamics. Never forget how key dynamics are when making tracks.

Porter's remix of The Thrill is a great and extreme example. The reason the drop feels so full and inspirational is both because of sound and composition yes, but it's also because of how quiet the song is previous to the drop.

Never forget that empty space can be a great thing in a mix.

I literally know every artist and every song you posted xD hahaha all good stuff.

I mean specifically that 80s house vibe. I tweeted at them once saying their sound is like an 80's version of the future and they told me that that's EXACTLY what they were going for. It's just so unique I literally think that there isn't a single other artist who makes music like them, or even closely similar. I just want more Oliver ALLL the time. I found out who they were like 2 weeks after they JUST came to town. Haven't been back since. Still so so so so so sad about that one. I need them in my life all the time.

Sound Design / Zedd - Papercuts Lead

Wondering how about you would go making the lead of Zedd's Papercuts.

There's a certain pop to the synth that I wonder how he gets it.

Sound Design / Re: What's your opinion on Presets ?
« on: March 03, 2016, 05:42:58 am »
In general I dislike them simply because I enjoy sound design so much and experimenting. But at the same time I'm not opposed to using one or 2 where need be. I'm just against people in general only using presets and never learning any sound design. Be creative! But if you hear a sound that you vibe to and would just be PERFECT, then use it! Why pass up a sound that you love? :)

(:D ...no for real, it's slower, but it helps. :) )

You mean just stop working on them for a while? My problem is that I literally can't move forward on these tracks due to what I have computer wise. As well as I'm always learning new things whether it be sound design, mastering, etc, and I want to continue to apply them. So I just keep starting over and over with new tracks.

I just hate not having a job. Agh. Need that cash. :P

No he means "freeze" them in a different way. I'm not sure about other DAWs, but Ableton allows you to freeze a track, meaning the fx chain and some parameters are "frozen" (you can't manipulate them).  The benefit is that it requires much less processing power to do so.

In ableton, try right clicking on a track title and selecting "freeze track(s)". If not in ableton, i assume they have a similar feature but am not sure.

I use FL and all you can really do is render channels and insert them. Same effect I guess. But the problem is is that even having them in the project at all makes it cpu clip.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Inspirational Fluxes

I get really inspired trackwise, until my cpu starts causing my tracks to clip (too many tracks) and then I just wanna give up.

I recently got laid off a week before I was going to blow 1.5k on a solid desktop for production and now I just feel like shit.

I just hate hitting that wall. It's why I have so many short projects. And I can't do the whole render and insert into the project thing as I am ALWAYS hearing little things that I want added or changed.

It just sucks hitting this point.
