WIPs / Re: Meghan Trainor - No remix | Arrangement Help Please
« on: May 01, 2016, 02:47:01 am »
I'd say it becomes a litttle too repetitive. feels like it needs a downsection with a different chord progro/vibe to it. Another thing I suggest adding is some kind of additive melody over the drop. Gets too bland as well. I like the sounds used though. They're solid! Just could use some extra punches here and there.

I really like the intro sounds, though I'd widen them a bit. The snare is pretty good that you have, I'd maybe add a touch more reverb though.

WOW, I was NOT expecting that change at 0:37, but I really like it! I think it may need more mid section like an additional pad in there to fill the space, but it's a really cool idea! For example, when those gorgeous arps come in at 0:49, there's nothing accompanying them to give the track more flow...do you know what I mean?

Here, I'll give you an example. In Kasbo's track "Kaleidoscope", the arp in the main drop has enough accompanying it and it acts as a means to fill space as well, as opposed to an outright lead. Here's the track for reference, the arp I'm referring to comes in at 1:40:
Other than that, I agree with carlitoNthecokefactory - the lead is a bit too loud and drowns out the kicks, but it's a solid track so far! :)

I know that track very well. Kasbo is a beast.

So you're saying layer in another synth over what's already pre-existing? I could try that. I'll do that and give it a listen and see how it sounds. Thank you for the suggestions and compliments man!

Hey guys! Thank you for both the feedback and the positivity! Means a lot to me! I took the feedback and re-worked a sidechain and eqs.

The original link above is now updated with my new version, so check it out again!

Also I added a very slight LFO to the opening pad to give it a little bit a flavor, but still mellow.

Let me know what you guys think! Haven't pushed forward yet with composition as I want to get this section nailed first.

Seriously, thank you. :)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Sidechaining

Nicky Romeros Kickstart Vst is very helpful with sidechaining

That's automated sidechaining. I need reactive sidechaining. 2 different things.

WIPs / Re: New to producing and could use some feedback

I second what above commenter said. I have 3 people who I go to with ALLL my stuff. I trust them to give me constructive but hard feedback.

So, what made you want to produce? Was it the concept of making music? Was it the insane sounds?

Whatever it was, focus on doing that first.

For me I fell in LOOOVEEEE with sound design. So I spent all my early time learning vsts and making myself a personal handmade sound bank. But if that's not your thing, start off with some presets/tutorials on sound design and start learning about mastering and sidechaining. I can't stress how important those things are. Another this is to listen to artists who you really love/inspire you and figure out the little things they do in their music that makes you like them. After that start paying attention to their composition of their songs. How you put a song together seems so simple, but that's where most people go completely wrong. Make sure it doesn't get too boring sound wise or repetition wise. Keep things interesting and changing, but still familiar.

Other than that my man it's just a lot of practice and learning. If you love it it's work that you love. You gotta find what makes you love it and stick to that.

Fucking awesome.

The detuning adds a lot to it all. Great start of a portfolio! Keep it going. No suggestions at all. It's solid :)

WIPs / Re: Progressive WIP
« on: April 18, 2016, 12:32:25 am »
I second what above commenter said about low quality sounding. I'm assuming you're using sylenth for this. Sylenth's white noise will do that. It's better to use a different white noise and chain it in like it's coming from the patch naturally. Sylenth's white noise can just be a bit janky for progressive trance as it already tends to use a lot of those higher frequencies with risers, sweepers, snares, and high hats.

Just use a different white noise, chain it in, and eq it and you should be all good.

Progression is nice. I reaaaaallllyyy dig progressive trance. Jason Ross and Ilan Bluestone being my 2 favorites.

Melody is solid as well just repetitive enough to be stuck in your head, but not be annoyingly so.

Fantastic job on the composition! :) Keep it up and I'd LOVE to hear the finished result.

Edit: On second listen I'd suggest changing the build up to the drop as it's a little long for how typical it is. Make something more unique, rhythmic pre-drop. It'll add a lot into the groove and dynamic of the track!

It's definitely Lovetrap. If you haven't heard of Saturn ($aturn) check him out. Chill vibes. Some parts are a little to repetitive melodically. Just a change in a few notes or something would help. Super unique though and THAT IS SO KEY. :)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Sidechaining

for just a by-the-numbers tutorial, here's a video of how you'd sidechain using pro-c. i dont personally use pro-c, i use a peak controller (which is arguably more convoluted), but that tutorial should get you where you wanna be.

also, some things that help a lot with getting more control out of sidechaining:
dont be afraid to sidechain only specific frequencies out. (i.e. you can drop out a whole bassline, or just the lowend)
use multiple SCs for individual instruments (smaller ones on the lead/pads and larger ones on the bass, etc) to let things breath more
use shorter samples, like a trap snare or white noise, to trigger the SC so you can adjust the release yourself.

Watched the vid and it helped a bit. But I still I know of 2 different ways to sidechain in fl (pro-c and using the limiter compresssion), but I still don't know how to sidechain into specific frequencies by doing that. IE, on this song I'm currently working on when the kick/sub and this airy whistle I made play together it causes a clipping noise on said frequency. It's on the punchier fqs of the kick and I'm wondering how I can sidechain just those frequencies specifically and haven't found anything guidewise. :/

Thank you for the help so far though!

Mixing/Mastering / Sidechaining
« on: April 17, 2016, 09:09:33 pm »
Can someone give me a rundown on sidechaining? I'm attempting to use fabfilter pro-c to do it and the whole process confuses me completely. Thought I understood it and then everything got blown out of the water.

Basically my snare disappears in a mixdown because of my synth. I've done the proper eq'ing to make it stand out as much as possible, but I know a proper sidechain would make it perfect.

Can someone just elaborate on how to do that? Would be a HUGE help to me as it's something I'm completely lost with right now and it's so frustrating.

Thank you in advance! :)

It's an ok idea, but i think the repetitive nature kinda is off putting.

It's tough to see where you'll take this just as is. you could of developed an entire song with just those sections you have. all you'd really need is the transitions.

and IMO the transitions are the toughest part of any EDM song.

Most transitions are way too the same in every EDM song sadly. I try to stick away from overusing white noise samples and risers.

Also I have made many changes already. Both in melody, rhythm, and fx changing things up here and there. I want the beginning to just be vibey. Repetitive in nature. Calm and familiar. Then bring it into something thats totally new and eye opening in contrast. :) Thank you for the feedback!

Awesome track. Super unique as well (which is an enormous compliment.) Drums get lost in the dropsection though. Awesome feel and isn't very future bass or chill. It's one of a kind my friend! Love the drum fills.

inb4 others say this sounds somewhat reminiscent of old Unlike Pluto. The 2nd breakdown could use a change-up I think. That's just personal taste.
