Multi-band compression and soft saturation. Also, watch this

Not sure how to explain emotional, but I'll try. It's like when a melody isn't sad, but it still draws some sort of emotion that isn't light and happy (this is really hard to explain sorry). It's not quite sad, but not even close to happy. Kind of dark. You know what, here's a song:

It's not quite sad, but close. I'm really struggling with this. Hopefully I helped a bit.
I think I get the general idea? sort of? but there has to be a better word for that than "emotional". "What kind of emotion you aiming for?" "Oh, you know, emotional."
This is just one of those things that irritates me for dumb reasons because I'm dumb.

Anyway, if someone's melodies trend towards one sound, that can be good, it means you're finding your style. But once you've got that style down, it's important to stay versatile, and find ways to express different emotions. Especially since in EDM, you can't rely on lyrics to show a wide emotional range.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Music Production device "PC/Laptop"
« on: January 11, 2016, 05:31:18 am »
GET AN AUDIO INTERFACE.

My production PC is a VAIO laptop more than five years old. The specs:
*Core i7 1.73 GHz
*8 GB RAM (upgraded from 4GB, but it worked fine before)
*7200 RPM drive (1 TB) no SSD
*Desktop Pod HD (guitar effects processor) as an audio interface

An interface is the easiest way to reduce latency. Other than that, if you've got plenty of decently fast storage for samples and projects, you're golden. In fact, unless you're using huge sample banks or layering more than 50 synths in every project, don't even worry about RAM.

All you really need is an interface.

I just built a new desktop (with the thread Babas linked) and I'm moving all my stuff on to that, but I'm definitely keeping this laptop around for future DJing and producing on the go. I kind of want to trash it out of spite for Sony, but regardless who put the parts together, a solid machine is a solid machine. Maybe I can pry the VAIO emblem off the back.

Depends on what the song needs.

On a side note, what emotion is "emotional"?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: [Ql Creating (logical) melodies

The biggest thing for melodies is PHRASING. Break your melodies up into phrases, short sections that make up a longer line. The breaks between phrases are where you would take a breath, if you were singing them.

Sound Design / Re: How do I pull the vocals out of a finished song?
« on: January 09, 2016, 09:01:12 pm »
If the vocals are panned down the middle, you can try cutting out the side signal and EQing. It'll still be really messy, but that's the best you can hope for without phase inversion.

I love foley-age :D
I know an ambient producer that makes "drums" from the sound of stepping on fallen leaves.

Autumn foley-age. ;D

We have a thread for this

There totally are! Jake, Kill The Noise, is like that too, that's why we're friends. But the thing that separates him from me is he really wants the world to hear, and the world fucking should hear cus he's got a lot to say.

KTN never stops amazing me. He's one of those few guys where you can tell he's just making the music he wants to make, but that music just happens to be stuff that's easy to get into, and that a lot of people like.

Sound Design / Re: ZynAddSubFX Synth (Better than Massive and Harmor)
« on: January 09, 2016, 05:50:47 pm »
I've never used it.  Care to tell us why you think it's better than the others?
Well, it's free, it has a ton of options for synthesis, and it has a solid preset library. But the GUI is sprawling and poorly organized, all the envelopes are ADSR-only, the additive synthesis is limited to the oscillators (in other words, it's not even close to being as versatile as Harmor), and the latest beta is from 2010.

Basically, you get what you pay for.

You probably are. I messed with it back in the day, and unless it's gone through some serious overhauls since then (and open source software isn't known for "serious overhauls"), I'll stick with Harmor.

(Unless you mean something other than this)

R&A Graveyard / Live/DJing forum?
« on: January 08, 2016, 11:24:24 pm »
This might be a bad idea, since we probably don't want the forum getting too complicated, but could there be a forum for making mixes, doing DJ sets, or other live performance stuff (like messing with Launchpads)? Some people here might want to go on the road and gig live at some point, and swap advice.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Frequency Guide

I really wouldn't use stuff like this. All these so called guides are harsh oversimplifications and guidelines that are never really true in most cases. Its best to use your ears and determine what works best through practice and trial and error.

They're definitely worth a read if you're starting to mix, some stuff is constant no matter what genre you're working with. And some of them aren't. Like in EDM, the body of the snare will usually be a lot higher than 100Hz (200-300 is typical, trap can go even higher).

And I guess this is a good time to post this again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBqgh_mvkys Dissection of a typical prog house mix.
