Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Drum Programming
« on: February 27, 2016, 09:45:43 am »
Listen to Aphex Twin,Squarepusher,Venetian Snares,Autechre,Xanopticon.

These guys are the best beatmake/programmers in the world, listen to them, try to reproduce some of their beats pattern.

If you can make a breakcore/idm/dnb beat you can make any kind of beat.

Are people actually y using the term "idm"? What is that supposed to cover?

I got to say that complex beats as Aphex Twin´s are not a good place to start when learning to make music.  His drums are seldom the driving force in his tracks, and the beats are usually complementing the theme rather than being it.

WIPs / Re: Newbie: Feedback on my track, Thanks!

Whoa!
A lot of stuff going on at the same time here. It basically sounds like you are trying to do everything at once.  There´s little or not lows, and not a lot of structure.  I´m sure the different melodies going on are fine by themselves, but in here they are all screaming for the same attention. try to focus on one melody, and remove the sounds that does not add to your track.  Try to midi map a reference track and copy the structure with your own sounds.
Hope this helps. GL

You should send demos to labels.  Do a little research to find what label fits you best, and submit some music.  It´s hard to be signed by big labels, but there are a lot of small ones that really does stuff for the sake of music(believe it or not).

Failure is when I trust the track, but in reality it doesn't speak to anybody. When I like the track, but not many other people do. When it's just empty despite all the effort.

Silly as it may be, You need to get your music out to more people...  Have you released any music commercially? You should try.  If you use your friends´reactions to tell you if what you make is good or not, you will almost always be disappointed unless you make "lowest common denominator" stuff.  None of my friends really like the stuff I make, but on spotify there´s a lot  it seems.  it´s just a matter of getting it out there.

I listened to you SC, and I think you have your own expression, and a lot of tracks that you should be proud of.

...based on past failures.

I think this may be the core of your problem. How do you define success, and how do you define failure?  Are you in this to "make it"? Or to make good music? What have you done that you consider a failure?

Sorry for asking so many questions, but it is important that you know what you want before you start measuring.
If you have managed to motivate yourself through 8 years, then you must see some rewards in connection to this.

I make all the elements, and then take weeks putting it all together even though it´s all cut´n´paste from thereon out...  I guess I just love making parts.

To infect a mac with a virus you have to authorize it to be installed to your system. Stay away from dodgy software and you´ll be fine.

And now we see what happens to suggestions that the mods don´t approve of:  They are just left here to die, with no decision ever being made.

Good to know.

Unimaginative chord progressions. Finger snapping as percussion.

If you´re 12 years old, then you really shouldn´t be using such language.  You might need it around Deadmau5 tho´....

I agree with the issues in putting discussions to rest.  When a suggestion does not catch on, it seems like the mods just pretend that it never existed, hoping that it will go away.  When people are never told no, they tend to nag, nag, nag until they get an answer.  A forum population needs some discipline, and if the makers don´t feel like doing the moderation, then they should ask someone else to do the job(I´m not volunteering).

Sometimes I wish that people actually knew what they were talking about before answering in a thread.

The Surface Pro handles Photoshop image processing better than a 2015 MacBook Pro(cnet review).  How it works on audio I don´t know.

I think you should check with the FL twitter account.  They´ll probably give you some pointers.

I don't get the whole "I need to feel extreme emotions to write music" thing.
I do, but I totally agree with you on the "put in work" part.  I use these periods to make different kinds of music.  I put more emotions into tracks I make when have "the feels", and make lighter stuff when I don´t have them.

If you manage to get tired of music altogether, like it seems like that is where the OP is, then please don´t stop searching!  I got so sick of music that I didn´t listen to anything for almost 3 years. I picked news stations when I was driving.  And when I really started exploring again I got really pissed at myself for all the stuff I missed.

TL:DR use different emotions for different types of music. Never say die.
