Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: KRK Rokit 5/6/8 vs Yahama HS5/6/7
« on: January 07, 2016, 08:03:31 am »
I have the Yahama HS7s and I love them :)

I have never owned any KRK models, however when I went to buy my monitors I sat in a small studio and the shop owner let me listen to music through both models to make my mind up.

To me the KRKs sounded a bit muddy - definitely not as clear as the HS7s - and I think the bass was a bit overpowering in them. Hope I helped :)

It sounds basic, but I really like Ableton's Overdrive and Redux, together they can make stuff sounds nasty :) Then again I don't tend to make many f*cked up sounds in my style ;D

Huge fan by the way Xilent! :D

Don't go overboard though, people often get too caught up in the hype of gear and only end up concentrating on collecting as much as they can (I got caught up in the all too, dw)

That's exactly what i'm trying to avoid ;D

Also yes i've heard a lot of good things about FabFilter's plugins; I might save up for one or two in the future.

« on: January 06, 2016, 04:49:36 pm »
At the moment I don't have any extra effects plugins and use Ableton's in-built stuff. It works for me, but so many people have additional FX plugins from FabFilter, Waves, iZotope etc. Just wondering if people really think it's worth the money, or is it just personal opinion? :)

Are there any specific plugins people would recommend?

I just use Ableton effects at the moment; could anyone give an honest opinion on whether they believe it is worth buying plugins such as Fab-Filter, Waves etc. based on how much they cost compared to how useful they are? :)

I use the Multiband Dynamics effect to separate my low, mid and high frequencies, then compress each one individually. Then I have a master EQ 8, Saturator and Limiter :)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Cheap analog gear thread!

It's not super cheap, but i'd recommend the Arturia Microbrute (around £220 or so). I bought it recently and instantly understood why some people can't shut up about the "analog sound." ;D

Feature-wise I have to admit it's fairly basic; it's monophonic and you can't detune oscillators. Also I would have loved for it to be battery powered so I can just take it anywhere :D But for simple bass sounds particularly, and bright saws/squares, it sounds amazing :)

My favourite plugin is definitely FM8, and I don't even use the most complicated features of it! I keep it pretty basic honestly. I just love how bright FM synthesis sounds, and i've gotten so used to it that I can make what I want pretty quickly now :)

I think you've certainly got a really unique and interesting style here; keep working on it for sure :D

I think you could refine your mixing and mastering however; I think the bass is a bit over-powering and the drums feel a bit lost. If you quieten the bass a bit, you can make room for everything else to pop out a bit more, so the drums will sound more punchy and the vocals will sound clearer. I think if a track has vocals, they should always be the main focus of a track so they can't be overpowered by anything else.

However as I said at the beginning I think the musical content is great and you've got an awesome, original sound :)

I remember a time when I would have absolutely LOVED this track :D

It's certainly a great remix, just not my personal preference in terms of genre and style right now. But it's certainly a great complextro track; very "old Madeon-esque", or Mord Fustang too.

Can I just ask, on the drops, have you got any white noise in the background? I can't hear any, and I think because of that the drop just lacks a little bit of energy. I find if there is just a little bit of white noise running in the back of a drop it hits harder and feels fuller. Try it out and if you don't like it then don't do it; it's up to you :)

Otherwise I think it's great ;D

Reaaaally chilled haha ;D I love the part at around 1:30 when the bright chords come in.

I think production-wise this is pretty sound; it all sounds clear. I don't have much negative to say about this to be honest :D

Finished Tracks / Re: Porter Robinson - Hear the Bells (Seafarer Remix)
« on: January 06, 2016, 09:02:25 am »
Hey, I'd have to agree with what most people are saying here. It certainly lacks sub, which means when the chorus/drop hits, it lacks a bit of umph.

That being said the rest is great, that arp at the beginning is sweet and there is a cowbell type percussion running through which I like. :)

Overall, you've definitely done the track justice and i'm a huge Porter Robinson fan! Just work on the sub to give it a bigger impact. ;)
