Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing With a Lot of Reverb and Delay
« on: January 09, 2016, 01:37:19 pm »
Well, you could always EQ/process your reverb aux tracks if there is a frequency buildup or anything else. You can also sidechain your reverb to taste so that it doesn't interfere with the dry sound.

Video from 7 Skies on sidechaining the reverb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNKlQOf_-KI

I do already tend to do this and it has definitely helped in allowing other instruments to punch through a bit; thanks though :)

Mixing/Mastering / Mixing With a Lot of Reverb and Delay
« on: January 09, 2016, 01:27:52 pm »
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for getting a cleaner mix when you use a lot of reverb and delay in your music.

It's part of my style and I don't want to have to compromise it all that much by cutting down the reverb/delay tails or making the sounds more dry, but then a lot of people tend to say that if you use to much reverb the mix will start to get muddy and I see what they mean.

Any advice? :)

I'd say simply go through the same process you went through to decide Logic in the first place; try demos and see which you like most :)

R&A Graveyard / Re: Forum app

I agree with Joseph honestly; I don't think an app is a priority at all. I feel like there are better ways the sight developers could spend their time imo. But yeah that's just my opinion obviously it's not down to me :)

I'm currently close to finishing an album, and what worked for me was doing some thorough planning.

I made a document writing about how I wanted the album to make me feel, what emotion each individual song would convey, the "signature sounds" I wanted throughout the album so it felt cohesive etc. I also found digital art which reminded me how I wanted to feel about the album.

It was honestly about a 10 page document and took a few weeks to complete, but once I had that nailed down, I felt so organised and I had such a clear view of the direction I wanted to go in that the task felt far less daunting.

From there i'd suggest working on multiple tracks at the same time rather than one at a time, so if you've got a block with one particular track you can still work on something else, and it feels like you're getting a lot more done imo :)

I've plugged it on the forum before, but I genuinely believe it deserves its own topic...

It's a book called "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron.

The book at first seems pretty outlandish; it's quite spiritual and honestly I could have given up reading after the first chapter. It talks of a "God," however not in the religious sense, but in the sense of a creative flow of energy which flows through us all.

I know, I was sceptical at first, but I read through it, tried to put a few of it's tips into practise, and it's worked wonders for me. I feel so much more motivated and so much more creative :)

Madeon, Porter Robinson, Lemaitre, Flume, CHVRCHES, Skrillex are my main inspirations probably. But I could go on ;D

I love CHVRCHES' production so much!

I saw them live in Manchester this year; amazing ;D

I was inspired by watching Skrillex's touring videos and thinking "I want to do that!" Skrillex in South America I remember very clearly was the one which inspired me most :)

I'll start with some art that recently inspired my music:

DUDE the picture of the mountains with the polygons... I just get that so much ;D ;D ;D

As I open Ableton, I have a group with about 6 drum racks (one for kick, for snares, claps, hats, percussion and noise), then a pre-made sub, an instrument rack with my Microbrute through it and then a few midi tracks. All of them have a few effects i'll probably use (EQ, Compressor, Limiter) but all deactivated. :)

I'd give a shout to Icarus by Madeon, remembering at the time he was around 18 and it sounded like nothing else out there. Maybe there's a little bias since I love the song ;D

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: How do you get your own style?
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:58:30 pm »
Honestly, I found my style by accident, but when you find your sound, you'll know.

Keep in mind before this story, I was - just like you - frustrated in not having my "own sound..."

I was p*ssing about with a mate; he makes YouTube videos and needed some background music. He was basically telling me what he wanted the music to sound like and I was doing it for him, nothing special. We had this guitar riff going with an Ableton sample; it sounded decent but we both knew it needed something else. So as a joke, I completely ramped up the reverb and delay to almost max. I was preparing myself to laugh when we both stopped and went, "actually, that sounds kinda good..." ;D

From then on i've just been experimenting basically with drenching sounds in reverb and delay, as well as a bunch of other things I like to incorporate in "my sound."

The fact of the matter is, if I told you how to make "your sound" then it wouldn't be your sound anymore. You just have to keep experimenting. Do things which break the rules if you have to - I did and now i'm very much satisfied :)

And like I said, if you find something you like, and you listen back a week later and you still like it, and then a month later and you still like it, then you'll know it's your sound :)

I have Ableton's music strategy book too; excellent read (funnily enough even for those who don't use Ableton it could be useful) :)
