Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: What/Who inspired you to start?
« on: January 08, 2016, 07:20:06 pm »
Started when I heard Daft Punk when i was young. Then I got more into dance music. first show I went to was David Guetta at the height of Pop Life and it was actually really really good. Then I slowly went deeper and deeper until I found artists that really resonate with me. When I started looking into production it was because of Porter, Maya Jane Coles, Shadow Child.

So like a lot of people you start with the super mainstream and then slowly find the music that really works for you.

THIS

YUP! going to throw Sakuraburst's music in with this too. Really interesting music.

For me at least, because I'm so inexperienced I view being in the DAW as studying. sometimes I open and nothing happens and that's okay but now with the forum here I can at least try new techniques and see what they sound like and how to do them. That's how I figured out parallel compression and stuff like that. So forcing yourself to dedicate time is more important I guess. if you don't make music you at least better be learning something new. So I try and work on music very often even if nothing fruitful happens in terms of an actual song as long as I learn something.

/r/Songstems
/r/isolatedvocals
/r/instrumentals

These three subreddits are alright for what you're looking for.

Also Remix contests through beatport, remixcomps.com, splice and the million other remix comp sites.

All of these together and you have a pretty large catalog to sift through.

I may be posting a video tutorial sometime next week of this, if not over the weekend.

Yeah if you could do that and let me know when you do.. that would be like super cool. or whatever... no pressure.

The one a lot of people rely on is http://www.acapellas4u.co.uk/

But soundcloud as mentioned already and remix contests will also occasionally involve vocals.

I don't mind nexus but I know that some people aren't a fan of the lack of control you have on the sound. you can add fx but that's it you can't change the actual wavetables.

You don't have to add Fruity Balance, just automate the volume knob of the individual instrument / audio clip in your pattern view. That way it's separate from your mixer channel's volume settings.

^this, you have a bunch of different ways to automate the volume without using a VST. if you want to automate multiple synths at once you can run them all inside patcher then automate the volume of one or all at the same time using the pattern view.

*put pitcher, meant patcher.

If you want the standard text to speech I just use google and see what each site that pops up has in terms of voices. If you want to get super complex you can look into something like a vocaloid like Daisy which is a free one.

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro

indestructible studio standard for years now;
when i use these for 8hours in a row and then take them off - i feel naked.

then again it's always good to have a couple of different points of reference, so use the shittiest headphones or earbuds you can find and compare the sound once you're confident with a mixdown. remember that not every person who listens to your music will have the best headphones or audio equipment - in fact they'll most likely have the most basic speakers available, so make sure it sounds good on that, too.
Beyer are the best when you like your ear to be entirely covered. If you don't care, i would recommend Sennheiser HD 25 Basic or the HD 26. Those are also studio standard.

HD-25's are Djing standard but not production, the low end on those headphones are basically non-existent in a production setting.

Sound Design / Re: Catchy Future House Melody
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:48:22 pm »
if you listen to a lot of future house melodies it uses a lot of quick notes and then they usually have some pauses throughout the progression. Tchami's Untrue is one of the best examples I can think of here. you can hear that he has notes really quick after each other and then those pauses that create tension. that plus knowing theory and creating tension with the actually notes your using will definitely help.

Pay what you want. or just a free download. I mean the best example I can think of is Pretty lights, he releases all of his music for free. and he's huge now. I don't think getting your music signed is a bad thing but ultimately you can control it. maybe you get signed by a label that does free download for a like. I think that's a decent compromise.
That's why I love bandcamp :D

I like bandcamp too the only problem being that it does seem tougher to draw people to it. Its easier to have a big label do the marketing for you. you have a good point though.

why don't you want to sell your art? i mean, people like lido make sincere music, don't DJ & still have a really good income... i don't think it's healthy to have that view on labels from the beginning whilst you're relatively unknown
People are free to donate if they want. I mean, I believe that arts is a way to live but I feel like paying to go in museum is wrong. Arts need to be free.

That's why I listed labels that are all willing to have PWYW releases... I have yet to charge for my music, but I accept donations.
PWYW is ?

had a pair of bad shure headphones and just recently switched to the M50x and I haven't looked back. they sounds great. I have tried beyerdynamics too and they actually might be a little bit comfier but that can vary for each person.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Headphones Vs Speakers
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:23:06 pm »
The one thing that I've always heard when it comes to this question is that "the more important thing is that you know what sounds good on that medium" so if you know what a good mix sounds like on a certain pair of headphones then you can use that as a reference for your own productions. Added with always using multiple times of headphones/speakers to listen to your mix.

So while monitors definitely are the better route to go, if you know what sounds good on your headphones you aren't at a huge loss.

I mean, Skrillex, Porter Robinson and probably way more than I can come up with have said they've produced on either cheap computer speakers or the built in speaker on a laptop.
