FM basses are quite complicated. I dont use FM8 but I use serum for FM synthesis. Its really playing with the combination of 2 sounds picking which will modulate to the other. Yes there will still be processing afterwards if you think you need. Personally would add a slight bit of extra distortion and eqing

When you say 2 sounds what do you mean by that? or do you mean more generally with FM synthesis as opposed to my specific sound I'm going for?

Yeah I found that FL's Piano Roll is easier to draw stuff out compared to Ableton but Ableton has better automation plus some default plugins seem better (Operator, Autopan, Autofilter). but its all preference and what you are comfortable with and what you want. No DAW is better.

Merci

For someone who doesn't know music theory that well what is the best way to analyze a chord progression from a track?
Actually it's not about music theory - I don't know any of it but I just use my ears to figure out individual notes when I hear a chord being played... but I know it's not easy for some people (I guess it comes with practice), so I'm assuming there're tools that can be used to analyze chords/progressions.  A quick google search gives some results, but I welcome any pointers from people who actually used any of those tools!

Hey man, here is a site that has a lot of chord progressions and melodies of popular songs (And EDM songs), example

WIPs / Re: In terms of EDM/Big Room is this good?

It has a good start for sure. to add onto the variation during the drop maybe add like toms or something or a snare roll or add little drum flairs? I can hear it in my head it just needs that something else. Use some reference songs and you'll see what they do to add more groove/variety. Keep it up!

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I feel like I'm missing something in regards to the energy and then mix and master is something I'm lacking but I don't know what I should do to be better.

Thanks everybody and Thanks to Mat and Rishi for making this awesome forum! :)

I've gotten presets for FM8 that sound sort of like this but usually a little harsher and I change it a little but it never sounds as "smooth" as some of the professionals have so basically i want to know

1) how to make one from scratch
2)why doing the things you do from scratch lead to it sounding the way it does
3) if its more processing after the fact or not

Can anyone help me learn something?
