Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Taking Samples from songs
« on: January 22, 2016, 07:00:48 pm »
I've tried this a couple of times and it seems to work out fairly well but I wanted to see what people do when it comes to taking sounds from tracks and if they know a way to get the most of the transient without the sounds from other instruments that might be playing at the same time?

pretty nice progression--not sure about that third chord tho (the leading chord that just hits once). I know what youre going for but it sounds off. Also some of the notes in the "sax" are dissonant to the progression and the timbre of the instrument is just a little harsh. I would experiment with something more synthetic and electronic rather than going for this quasi-violin/sax hybrid. drums are good, def got a good groove going. You could also potentially work with a better piano synth/sample..its a little muted (once again I know what youre going for--kinda like Shadow Child's Piano Weapon, but I think it could be improved still). Also not sure how much I like the build, the way you choose to loop it kinda decreases the tension in my opinon.

its definitely a great start though, it has the potential to be a solid loungey piano track

Thank you for all of that! its kind of funny because that "sax" is just a square wave with eq and delay. but i get what you're saying. I'll keep working on this!

i mostly make freeform hardcore with some trance and dnb, not sure how that makes a difference

Didn't mean anything bad by it I swear, just helps me understand where you're coming from that's all!

Classy~ gotta say i wouldn't mind relaxing on the sidelines of a casino to this beat. It's a bit simple in terms of composition and it does tend to be a bit repetitive. One thing i can imagine would give this track a lively vibe is some kind of background noise like water or a city crowd to really give that sense of immersion in the track itself. Don't really got much else to say, nice work on it

I get the repetitive line sometimes from other others so I have to ask if you make house music or not because everytime its someone from a genre that has a lot more rapid changes (usually dubstep) so i'm trying to take that advice constructively.

It might help what genres you would like to make. for the most part just google "how to make ____ with ____" and you'll have a good place to start.

Tried focusing on a couple areas that I'm not super skilled at yet in terms of arrangement and sound design.

All thoughts are welcome!

Such a cool vibe. I really really like this track. I do agree with the pluck fatigue, maybe just eq that frequency a soften it a little. The strings are really good and they just build that tension and emotion just right. The clap after the drop is good but it sounds like it would sit better if it was a semi tone or two lower but my ears could just be tired. The horn is spot on and I really like this. 9/10 would buy on beatport.

I make house music so I start with a minor 7th or 9th pretty much everytime and then I just make it up as I got. I know juuuust enough theory to know rules to break and to still be a little experimental with my melodies.

Also depends heavily on what else is in the song and what my lead sound happens to be. if its a happy sounding lead then I shape it around that.

I just select both WAV and MP3 in the render settings on FL Studio. Usually does a good job at it.
At the same time o_O or you mean rendering first wav, then mp3?
FL Studio actually has the ability to render both at the same time, yes.

eternally jealous.  Ableton fam cryin over here :'(

Yeah FL fam here, I was confused when I found out ableton didn't do that. I pray for you fam tbh

Language By Porter Robinson for sheer emotive power and simple melodies.

Contradiction by Maya Jane Coles for unbelievable groove and unique style.

If you can get custom earplugs made that is the best way to go. I got them over two year ago, they still fit perfect and they are a somewhat flat attenuation so the music isn't muffled. 10/10 would recommend.

I would love to get customs, especially because my ear shape rejects most earbuds I put in. (They just push themselves back out!)

Not in my current price range right now, but I would love to get some done in the future!

Any brand in particular that you would recommend?

Just go to a nearby audiologist and they'll make it for you. I just went to a place near my house.

What would we be looking at in terms of price?

I wish I got notified when someone quotes me so i can know when to answer lol. I paid something around 180 myself. I'm also canadian not sure if that affects anything but with the current dollar the way it is who knows lol.

I really hope this stays a "old school" forum where the things which deserve publicity get's publicity through replies on the topic and where you have to actually put in some effort to get the information which you want. I'm sick of all the "lay back, never activate your brain" stuff which is all over the internet, but that's just me.

And then it would be very bias and kind of unfair to a lot of threads. Say 95% of all the threads holds excelent quality, then only 1 of those threads get publicity, or get a much higher amount of publicity. Feels unfair somehow, but that's just my silly oldschool bitter opinions.

YES! I agree. However, it would be nice if you could have a setting where you go straight to a certain page when you log in (e.g., "My posts"). I've seen other forums that do that.

Yeah a "My posts" section would be a lot better

That does exist already. if you go to your profile under your profile info there is a "my posts" option. its a little out of the way but its there.

For load times I would get another SSD or two and have the entire DAW and samples and everything on those.

Ram is always an easy boost but you do get diminishing returns after a certain point (16gb is usually more than enough)

Sometimes it might be that you're just running too many instances of certain VSTs so it gets bogged down.

Hope that helps!

One thing I do that I like is if you're going from the main hook/chorus and want to go to the breakdown right after I put an 808 or low bass hit and then the first note of the hook and then drench it in reverb and delay and put it right when you want to transition to the breakdown. So basically your drop is happening then you build up to something then its just your root note rings out with that low bass tone kind of signifies the end of that section.

Sound Design / Re: What's the weirdest sound you've created?

https://soundcloud.com/neoesoteric/on-sum-nightmare-shiiiiiitt https://soundcloud.com/neoesoteric/the-telltale-heart-ex-nihilo/s-8jZ0e these have some of my most bizarre sound design that i've used in tracks (made through resampling) but ive gotten some even weirder stuff by putting executable files into audacity and processing the shit out of those

I feel like this is what its like to have schizophrenia.
