I'd love to have one of the s-keyboards.  But $600 for a 49-key is just too steep for me right now..

Wow, giving relationship advice in a production forum, that's a first!  ;)

ha! thanks for the encouraging words. I myself have some experience in the marriage arena as well (almost 5 years!).  Great advice for all relationships - whether music or humans :)

8) <-- This is Bob.
Bob freezes his tracks.
Bob is smart.
Be like Bob.

(:D ...no for real, it's slower, but it helps. :) )

You mean just stop working on them for a while? My problem is that I literally can't move forward on these tracks due to what I have computer wise. As well as I'm always learning new things whether it be sound design, mastering, etc, and I want to continue to apply them. So I just keep starting over and over with new tracks.

I just hate not having a job. Agh. Need that cash. :P

No he means "freeze" them in a different way. I'm not sure about other DAWs, but Ableton allows you to freeze a track, meaning the fx chain and some parameters are "frozen" (you can't manipulate them).  The benefit is that it requires much less processing power to do so.

In ableton, try right clicking on a track title and selecting "freeze track(s)". If not in ableton, i assume they have a similar feature but am not sure.

meh, I'm over being concerned about feeling "guilty" about listening to certain types of music.

Honestly? I like it all. I can jam w/ some boy bands, some metal, some classical, some singer-songwriter, some blues, some dub, some house.

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where we could listen to the Backstreet Boys guilt free?  :-P

It's just like a relationship.. sometimes you need some time and space away from your partner. But you always come back.

Wow, I've never heard it expressed this way...but I really like it.  I feel like it encapsulates the highs and the lows of a relationship.

Last night, I had a microcosm of what everyone is talking about.  After dinner, I said to myself, "I'm going to create SOMETHING tonight."  You see, I'm a procrastinator and will usually choose forums, organizing samples, testing new plugins, etc. over ACTUALLY MAKING MUSIC.  It's a frustrating trait within myself.  So last night, I said, "enough is enough" and tried to create something.

The first hour/hour and a half were AWFUL. Just mucking about some chord progressions and not getting ANYWHERE.  I'd think I was on the way to something good and then....nope.  It was terrible.

I decided to switch courses.  If I can't do chord progressions, why not start with a bassline?  I fired up u-he's hive, and started thumbing through the presets.  Next thing you know, with some arpeggiation, I had a decent groove.

Fast forward 3 more hours, and I made a LEGIT tune and backbone to a song last night.  I had FUN.  I was dancing and snapping to myself in my room.  It was glorious and I went to bed happy, content, satisfied...even overjoyed.  I had to force myself to go to bed (cuz I have a "real" job).

I don't know that there's a moral or point to my story, other than to add my voice to the choir that, yes, it happens to me to.  And maybe that sometimes there IS hope at the end of the tunnel.

Villms, I have a macbook pro as well.  I use a secondary monitor (one main monitor + my laptop screen). It's a cheapie (ViewSonic) I got off of Craigslist.  It doesn't need to be a specific brand. Just look at the connections it has (VGA/HDMI/etc.).  You'll likely need a dvi to ___ converter depending on what your specs of your comp are).

I hear what you're saying Zau, and understand your sentiment.  It seems like you're talking a lot about the "taste" that Ira Glass talks about in his creative people video.  He talks about how people have good "taste" and that when they first start out, the stuff they do doesn't match up with their good taste, because their music is...well, bad.  And it can cause people to be discouraged (it has done this to me for sure).

But it sounds like you're maybe talking about those who DON'T have taste and can't discern whether their junk is good or not or what clashing notes are or what real creativity is.  I agree that the breadth of software and tools available make anyone look decent on their first try.

All in all though, I disagree with your first statement especially.  I was driving home listening to music today and thinking about how many great artists there are out there that are just churning out GOOD music all the time. A few I listened to on the way home today: Jason Ross, Wrechiski, Andrew Bayer, Skrillex, Kygo, Cubicolor, Skrux...those guys are awesome in my opinion and the stuff they make is worth listening to.

So yes, beginners suck, and it sucks when they put their junk songs out for people to comment on when they really need to look at it more critically themselves before bringing it to the public.  This is why most of my stuff doesn't go on the internet...no need.  I know it's not there yet.  But when it is, I'll be ready and it will be received better as my "first" song, rather than my 20th that I've posted on the forum.

Ableton user here.

I always hear about the superiority of FL Studio's piano roll.  For those out there who have used it, and have some experience with Ableton's piano roll, fill me in - what are the differences? What are the major advantages to FL's piano roll.

I'm not trying to start a "which is better" thread here; I'm genuinely interested in the workflow improvements that I've heard FL Studio's piano roll has.

Thanks!

saw them in DC with Porter a few years back.  At the time, I had no clue who they were.

...after that night....I knew who they were.

This particular tune is quite wonky. I'm more of a fan of their metropolis-type stuff, but can still appreciate this!

this remix is so dope.  i didn't expect something so HARD to come from Matty.  It still has his trademark sound imo, too.  Just brilliant.
