Anyone have experience with both the Dave Parkinson pack AND the Sunny Lax pack (both from Freshly Squeezed Samples)?

Also, how would you all compare these two packs with the typical Vengeance pack?  Usefulness of sounds, clarity, value, etc.

Hell yeah, Ira. Thanks for that!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Music Theory: The TL;DR Version

Thanks for sharing.  I'm always down for TL;DR stuff. Most of the time, it's sufficient.

My 2 cents on bitwig.  They recently released v1.2 and v1.3.  Some of the features of these releases are: ability to group tracks, visual display of dynamics in fx, and project templates.

These are all things that have been available in ableton for a while..

I'm an ableton user. I love the look and idea of bitwig, but as deathy said, it's just not ready to replace ableton yet.

Thanks for sharing. Great collection of tips.  My favorite was from the Glitch Mob: "Spend less time on the internet and more time in the studio."

Wait, what am I doing here, then?

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Your Favourite Reference Tracks
« on: February 24, 2016, 07:52:55 pm »
recently I've been using Porter robinson's remix of the Thrill by nero, Language by porter robinson, Technicolor by Madeon, and Grey's remix of Papercut by zedd . I loveee the mix and feeling of those four so much

I'll say that Porter's Nero remix was criticized by a lot of people because of the mixing levels (the drop was SOO much louder than the rest of the track), so I'm not sure that would be the one I chose, but...different strokes for different folks.

I use Deadmau5, some of Porter's other tracks off of Worlds, Andrew Bayer (Do Androids Dream Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 is a great start)...a lot of the anjunabeats guys have really good mixdowns (Jason Ross, Ilan Bluestone, Grum).  Eric Prydz is also a good candidate.

When I start a new project my master channel is at 0db. It never moves.
I start all my tracks or midi lines at -10db.

I use Voxengo Elephant to monitor my waveform. If it goes above -6db, I correct each track or the track that is making it go over the -6dbs.

The same here, except I do -9db.  Never had any problem with clipping, especially if you mix based off of your kick's level.

Limitations breed creativity.  This is vital in today's saturated marketplace.  So much is available that everyone has everything.  Limit yourself and find new avenues.

give u-he's hive a try.  has three different filter/detune modes (clean, dirty, normal) to experiment with.  try changing the filter input gain and crank the resonance.

Echo what everyone else said. White noise, by definition, is inharmonic content spread relatively evenly across the entire sonic spectrum.  The character can be changed with filtering, eq, other fx.  Experiment, have fun.  Pull up a spectrum analyzer to see visually what's happening aurally.
