Memo in my phone for notes when I'm out. Otherwise, I have a doc. on my computer that I refer back to.  Also, youtube videos are saved/liked for future reference.

Here's a pretty comprehensive guide to mixing that I have saved as well: http://www.scribd.com/doc/5220863/Ravenspiral-Guide-to-Music-Theory

Quick tip: Put this plugin on your master channel/bus and then immediately save as the default set.  That way you won't have to remember to insert it halfway into your project.

A few things: Make sure there is no filter on the pure sine wave you're using, whether in the synth or in the DAW.  Make sure your headphones are rated for 20kHz+. Otherwise, it won't matter how high the synth emits sounds.  Use a frequency analyzer (Spectrum in ableton) to visualize the sound to help your ears and confirm the sound.

Hopefully this helps.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing for crappy speakers

Also interesting: I heard the other day that younger people these days, when given the choice between compressed mp3s and lossless file formats (wav, aiff) actually PREFER the sound of mp3s.  The thinking behind this is that this is the way they've always heard music, and thus, think that's the way it's "supposed" to sound.  Crazy, eh?

It's under your Profile Settings, in Looks & Layout!

Ah, thanks Mussar!  I checked before I posted, but I didn't see the pop-down menu.  Appreciate it!

1. u-he Hive
2. xfer Serum
3. Sonic Academy Kick

You'd be hard pressed to find sounds you can't make with this list.  (FM sounds MIGHT be difficult, but I imagine still possible.)

If you're looking for a synth that's very similar to Sylenth (but better IMO), get u-he's Hive.  Same capabilities, better modulation capabilities, full arpeggiator, wonderful effects, clear signal path, one-tab layout.

And it's important to remember what you're looking at here.  It's a "synthesizer", which means it "creates sounds".  There are tons and tons of synths out there that are capable, many of them free.  And I will caution you: just because you buy one doesn't mean you're more likely to "learn it".  I've made that mistake before myself!

I think with the extensive number of synths (and other software) available to modern producers, it's very important to LIMIT YOURSELF.  Creativity is often a consequence of limitations.  When you have every sound available to you, it can be daunting and can stifle creativity.

R&A Graveyard / Ability to Change Time Zones

If this has been requested already, I apologize.   But I'd love the ability to change the time zone so that the post times reflect where I'm at..

Probably Serum with a resizable interface, an arpeggiator, and better filters.  (Please don't crucify me, but I own Serum and it just doesn't have the "warmth" that I would like.  I know this is subjective, and Steve Duda is highly skeptical of people criticizing its "warmth" based on unquantifiable data...but it's just my opinion.)  Otherwise, that synth does most everything I'd like to do.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Studio monitor issue/ best cables?
« on: February 22, 2016, 03:20:16 am »
Hi Gearfiend, I have the exact same setup (JBLs w/ Scarlett interface).  I don't think that the quality of XLR cables will make a huge difference and I'm not sure that will fix your problem. I think most quality cables are just that...quality.  (It's like HDMI cables, ya know? Any expert will tell you to buy the cheapest ones - no need for the MONSTER cables - because they all do the same thing.)

Which cables are you currently using?  When does it make the static sound?  Is your DAW open?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Advice on choosing some monitors
« on: February 22, 2016, 03:17:08 am »
I've had KRK Rokit 5s and now own JBL LSR305s (one of the Rokits had an internal tweeter error after a couple years, necessitating a new purchase).

To be honest, I think the choice of monitors isn't that crucial in most situations.  What's more important is that you learn YOUR monitors.  Monitors' sound can be substantially affected by the placement in your room, for example.  The key is to know how yours sound so that you can get your intended result.

To do this, constant comparison is in order.  Play your mix back on your monitors. Then go in your car in listen. Listen to the differences (especially with low frequencies).  Tune and retune.  Listen to your mix on earbuds. Tune and retune....etc.
