Mixing/Mastering / Re: Tips for Clean Mix like Professionals

There are lots of ways to spread a single sound out in stereo:

Those are all great suggestions!

Also something you can do is this:

Put 1 mono sound in the middle of the mix, pan 1 delay of that sound extremely left and the same delay extremely right. Phase invert 1 of the 2 delays. It sounds superwide and when you make the output mono, the 2 delays cancel each other out and you still have perfect mono of the original sound.

I find that in a lot of ways, it's kind of like /r/gonewild except for that there are no females and none of the guys are gay. Everyone wants to post their massive dick pic, but none of those people posting them want to look at other pictures of dicks. Maybe if they're like 17 inches long or some crazy shit but even then they just don't care.

Can you believe this is the best explanation I have ever read?

Some nice chill out (I don't know a better word to describe as I'm not that familiar with the latest genres but it isn't dubstep, lol).

This song gives me a relaxing feeling from the first second, everything about this song is interesting, I hear some nice panning of the chords, somefiltered out drums at the beginning, lots of fx going on without being too distracting.

Keep us updated about the EP!

Is that a reversed kick before the first kick comes in @ 0:16? Nice!!

The song pumps as trance should pump. I don't know if it's side chaining I'm hearing but I like it that way. Some kind of Paul Van Dyk peak time track.

The gated piano reverb is fantastic, I can hear that you have thought out this song so well. And after that break is the hands in the air moment, right as expected.

Decent mix, nice stereo spreading, this song shouldn't be overlooked by lovers of this genre!

This song has a nice minimal approach. I don't know if many people will appreciate it, but I do! It keeps my head nodding, the bassline has something menacing in a good way. The random voices remind me of Richie Hawtin stuff.

The mix still needs lots of work, imho:

- Lack of bass frequencies
- Hihat have to be louder
- it sounds pretty narrow, it needs more panning to keep the mix interesting.

This will be a great song with a better mix.

This gave me a happy feeling from the moment the synth started @ 0:28. Happy tune!

The melody is pretty basic and it's hummable (Is that a word?) instantly.
The rap coming in around 3 minutes is very 90's indeed and after that a new bass melody strats, keeping things interesting.

The only thing I miss, is some spreading over the stereo field. Lik a panned delay on the chords, or something like that. Although the rap vocals are somewhat spread on some places.

This music would be great for listening while driving, I love the oldskool vibe.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Purchasing MIDI only sound packs
« on: January 15, 2016, 09:26:55 am »
I'm going to give an honest answer. Using midi packs is not making music.

I see your point, synchronice. but you can still get creative with synthesis and tempos and what not.

There are written so many rocks songs with the I-IV-V progression, or the I-V-vi-IV progression, are they all 'unimaginative'?

I'm in doubt about this topic. I never used midi pack myself, I have to admit, besides the 'single shot chords' from this one:

But that means I still write my own progression.

Check out this midi pack:

It can give you lots of inspiration; just drag and drop a chord into your daw and hear instantly how other (substitute) chords can spice up your progression.

I wonder what program this is... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bc5TYO_1Ik  :D

This reminds me of this old video (1990?). He used almost the same graphics to explain mixing.

Thanks Arrient, I can use this comment for my next song.

I returned the favor.  :)

Playing house:

Nice mellow vibes. The sub bass isn't really overpowering but it's there, it suits the song. The mix is good! You got the song pretty loud, without noticable distortion, good job!

Maybe you can add more excitement to the song by playing more with autopanning, adding something extra to the stereo width?

Against the World:

I hear a lot more stereospread than 'Playing House'. Pretty loud mastering again without distortion but the ducking on the voice in the chorus is a bit too obvious to my taste This gives me a nice uplifting feeling, I enjoyed the listen!

Also I`m going to experiment more with bVI and bVII in major scale. In C Major it`s G# Major and A# Major,

Should't that be

bVI = Ab Major
bVII = Bb Major  ?

I know, it's nitpicking but otherwise I get confused. Great idea, btw!!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Squashed sounding master?

When I listen to them through the ASIO driver, everything sounds fine. When I switch to the primary sound driver, the volume lowers and the track sounds squashed.

I'm not sure if I understand your question. Do you mean that your music sounds different on another media player?

Can you explain which software/ media players you use? Could it be something about the settings from your players? Some use automatic makeup gain, for instance.

I encountered this channel in the past and yes, those are great videos.

Thanks for reminding me again. 8)
