A couple of things I've noticed after listening to a lot of WIPs:

1. A lot of the difference between amateur and pro productions is that beginners will try things that are bad in isolation, rather than not working because of a lack of processing, or not enough knowledge of composition etc. In particular this applies to poor initial choice of sounds.

2. When you can tell your production is lacking something but you haven't learned enough to figure out what, in trying to fix the problem you tend to stick to just the things you know how to change (beat patterns, chord progressions, adding new elements etc.) This means you are still stuck with problem 1.

3. As a result of 1 and 2: adding things can take away from your mix, and vice versa.

Another trick you could try with those long sustained chords is to use a pitch LFO with a long attack so that the longer the chord is held, the more vibrato there is

...but honestly, I find it boring. It might sound good in the club and I guess it's good weapon in loudness war, but I like when the stereo stage is more diversified.

That's fair enough tbh. I don't like it that much myself (although I love some of their other stuff) - it was just the best example I had of a track that registered as wide even though everything seemed panned towards the centre.

Maybe they did just widen the whole mix tbh, I just kind of assumed it would be something more sophisticated than that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Did you try just a sine wave? Sorry if that's a dumb question. That clip you posted is quite discordant and has lots of harmonics, so you'd probably want to keep the bass sound underneath as simple as possible. Stuff in the really low bass frequencies should always be pretty simple

There's some kind of fill at 1:27ish (and again later in the track) that feels like it should be further forward in the mix - it's kind of obscured atm.

This is sick though. Out of curiosity, how long have you been working on it? Either in terms of hours you've put into it or days/weeks working on it. Or both.

Funky! This feels like it could use a heavier kick drum, I don't think it's cutting through the mix enough. Could be a sidechaining thing too.

you'll be really good at what you do when you figure out where to put all your random samples and which songs to use them in.
I think this nails it.

Your tracks are pretty far out, but in a way that mostly works. They're a little bit *too* random for my liking. Maybe that's just me, but even the most twisted and outlandish shit still has some kind of logic and structure to it if it's good.

It's pretty awesome that your stuff is quite random and crazy without just sounding like garbage. I don't know how you hone that impulse.. just keep at it and keep learning I guess!

I'd focus more on learning how subtractive synthesis works, and learning how different waveforms sound under different conditions (lots of unison and some pitch spread, 2 voices detuned slightly against each other, with one oscillator an octave higher or a fifth higher, with reverb, with distortion, with reverb and distortion (swap the order around too!), and with chorus/flanging/phasing/delay). Don't chase the gear, chase the experience.

Cool, thanks for the tips man.

I don't think the popular synths become popular completely by accident. I mean sure, at some point their popularity becomes self-sustaining, but they have to fundamentally not suck to get to that point.

And yeah I didn't ask for the 'best' anything, because the answer to that is pretty much always 'it depends'.

Can you post the sound up somewhere, like Clyp?

Thanks man. I've been playing with Massive, makes some very nice noises :D

I think something like this would be a cool idea.

I liked everything in there up to about 1:30, but after that it got a bit messy and discordant.

There's some kind of reverse percussion sound in there that I really like, but because it's quite tonal it clashes with the other melodic bits of the track.

IYO.

I need to learn synthesis properly before I try making any more tracks, so I want to pick one synth and learn it inside out.

I don't really have anything apart from stock synths atm, and I figure if I buy just one I'm more likely to be forced to learn it thoroughly. But that also means I'll need something I can rely on pretty heavily, so it would have to be versatile.

If you wouldn't go for Sylenth, what would you go for instead?

Basically I was gonna just make a 'what synth should I learn synthesis on' thread but a lot of people mentioned Sylenth as their first. Harmor, Serum and Massive came up also. I'm not a complete noob (I had a Virus B for a couple of years), but I want to get a hell of a lot better at making my ideas into reality.

Thanks peeps!

Bertie South - Maybe change the bassline up an octave so that it stands apart more from the drums?

Not necessarily. Just make sure that there aren't any unwanted frequencies in the low end and that the sounds are tight (so start with decent sounds, then use EQ and compression to tidy and tighten them up if need be), and that the bass from the kick and from your bassline aren't clashing - you don't want them playing at the same time when it comes to sub frequencies. Sidechaining the bassline will help with this, as long as you know what you're doing.
