WIPs / Re: progressive track so far: "Remember"

I wouldn't say there's too much going on in your mix. If you were thinking that the mix doesn't sound very clear though, I would agree with that.

The kick sounds very light for this kind of track to be honest. It almost sounds right during the quieter section but I'd definitely go for something different in the first half

Those claps and snares in the buildup need to come up in the mix, and you probably want to layer your sounds up to give them more presence. That kick is also a bit bland (imo). The track has a nice concept though

Sounds a bit lo-fi, and there doesn't seem to be much going on in the high end, but this is bumpin' :D

Yo,

I love the arpeggio and chords in the breakdown. But when the bassline comes back in it seems to be playing a more complex chord progression that doesn't work as well. At 2:35 for example the bass seems to be part of a different chord to the other elements.

My knowledge of this is a bit rusty, but if I remember rightly a bassline shouldn't hold on notes other than the fundamental of the chord or a closely related note (I forget what the term is). You can use other notes in transitions but not as the main notes of your bassline.

There are a few keys to making any learning enjoyable enough to stick with: challenges that are suitable for your level, and feedback that you can understand, so that you can use it to improve.

In a way I think that using construction kits and presets and other pre-made things might help you as a beginner, because it means you can narrow your focus to some of the basics and still get decent results. You want to set yourself realistic challenges so that you don't become demotivated, so don't expect to make great songs off the bat. Stick to something smaller, like trying to make a good riff or a good chord progression.

As long as you feel like you're learning and improving you won't get demotivated, so stick to small things that are (just) within your grasp to master, and as you grow you'll be able to build on what you've learned to take on bigger things.

I would've thought this would be pretty tricky to just jump on into. My hunch is that songwriting is a skill like any other, with rules and formulas and the requirement to spend a ton of time practising..

This is an interesting question. Ableton's interface doesn't look very welcoming to me, whereas I like that of Logic, which is what I currently use. The look and feel of your DAW might not seem that important but I think it is. It can be a subtle thing that you don't consciously register but which does affect your motivation, even though there might not seem to be a good reason why looks and aesthetics should affect your enthusiasm for creating things.

I would say that if one DAW makes you feel positive about working on music and another doesn't, it helps to try and figure out why. But even if you can't, and even if it doesn't seem to make sense that it would have an influence on you, I would accept that it does, and go with whatever helps you get creative.

A trick that sometimes works if you can get hold of an instrumental of the track, is to phase invert the instrumental and then line it up with the original in your DAW. But it doesn't always work very well, on top of which some producers have got wise to it and deliberately phase-invert some part of the instrumental mix, so that it won't cancel out.

Interesting, nobody's commented on that drop before. Will see if anyone else brings it up, cheers

I like it, would be interesting to hear the original for comparison.

WIPs / Re: almost finished my original.. was hoping i could get some tips
« on: February 02, 2016, 04:15:25 pm »

could you tell me which point of the song you hear these weird parts ? i might have missed it cause iv heard the song so sososos many times now..
Sure. Having listened closer, there's that atmospheric chord thing in the background that seems to be causing quite a few of the problems - it kinda sounds like it's detuned in itself (i.e. it's not actually hitting notes on the scale but is between notes).

It's particularly noticeable at:

2:08
2:31
2:45 (this one not so much but it's there)
2:56
3:30
4:04
5:26-5:36

The first and last ones at least seem to be because of that chord in the background.. the others it seems like kind of a mix of things. I think changing or taking out that background chord would fix a lot of this, and then it would be easier to tell if the other bits were clashing.

I like the chords themselves though, it's an interesting progression and it works, so I would change the other things around it.

That two-note pattern that repeats starting at 0:46/47 grated a bit for me, but I'm generally put off by tracks that have a lot of discordant sounds like this one. I quite like this overall though, and I wouldn't usually be into this kind of thing. I like all the edits and the more staccato version of those same notes that you use a few bars later.

It might help to add a line to the pinned topics in the Finished/WIP forums about this.

Obviously you can also just find the original yourself but who has time these days..
