Mixing/Mastering / Re: Spectral Analyzing or How to?
« on: February 05, 2016, 04:29:01 pm »

Yo,

Spectral analysis is useful but I wouldn't rely on it alone. Whatever level you're at, your ears will always be a better guide than a picture about the general balance of frequencies in your track.

It does sound like maybe you haven't made the best possible use of the really low frequencies BUT that doesn't mean the best thing for your track right now is just to add some. I would do the following, then see where you're at:

1. Make sure there's no stereo information in your low frequencies - it sounds like you might have some because of the samples you've used or because of reverb at really low frequencies.
2. Make sure none of your channels have low-frequency information that isn't needed, as it will make your mix sound muddy.

After that your low-end should be clearer and you can work on your bassline. Maybe you can play it an octave lower, maybe you should high-pass your current bassline to keep the highs and have a sub bass underneath - play around with it and see what happens.

Well it's a lovely tune, but isn't anybody going to chide this 'Mat_Zo' fella for not leaving feedback for others first?  :P

He's actually left feedback on other user's post, so dont judge without researching.
I would almost say he doesn't NEED to leave feedback, he CREATED this site with Rishi, and that's where his credit is :P

No worries, I was jesting good buddy!

Sound Design / Re: Swinging Kick / Sub-bass in a Track
« on: February 04, 2016, 10:40:48 pm »
I don't think there's a great deal to it, just that both sounds are made in a similar way, or from the same source, so that they have a matching tonal quality. This makes it sound natural (as does the swing kick being quieter than the main kick) as it would if you were playing a real kit.

The reason this is difficult if you're working with samples is that hitting a drum harder doesn't just result in a louder sound but one with a sharper transient and a greater range of frequencies, among other things. So any drums you're working with to make a swing pattern, you'd want samples of soft and hard hits to make it sound convincing.

Nice track! I think you may have sidechained it a little too heavily, but I seem to say that a lot so maybe I just don't know good sidechaining when I hear it :D

Really like the ending with that ticking sound running down too, nice touch.

The overall mix is a bit bass-heavy. I think you need to work with the vocal levels a bit - they sound about right in the really stripped down sections at the beginning and in the middle, but they seem to get quieter when other sounds start coming in. Also that reverbed sound that starts at 1:52 didn't sound quite right when I listened.

One of the notes in your bassline (1:08 is the first one) *might* need changing - I can't decide if it works or not. At 3:16 with that guitar it's creating some pretty complex harmonics (I think that's the right word) that maybe don't fit the song. I'd get some other opinions on this though, it's partly just personal taste.

I do actually like this btw, even if it doesn't sound like it from the above :D

Listening in headphones.. that kick sounds VERY heavy. The bass on it is nice, but it sounds out of proportion to the rest of the track. If there's a bassline to your track I can't make it out against the kick. Chords/melody/choice of sounds-wise this is good though

I'm don't have much to comment on this (in a good way I mean) - your levels are good, nothing's too loud or too quiet. The overall mix sounds a bit bass-heavy, but pretty much everything I've ever made has been guilty of that, and it's nothing to sweat at this stage. This really isn't a bad track at all if it's the first thing you've made. I rediscovered a couple of my first productions the other day and I almost cried with shame listening to them :D

Don't worry about mastering at this stage btw, and don't be under the impression that you'll need mastering to persuade people that your tracks are good. A good song will be self-evidently good without mastering or even a mixdown to be honest. Those things are just polish.

Put Bluntly: 99% of the time, if I dwell on an element of a track and ask myself "Does this sound okay? I'm not sure if it does..." Then it usually doesn't.

^ Solid advice right there.

This is nice man, you have a good ear for rhythm. I like how the track has little switches between 1/3 and 1/4 beats, one of my favourite little tricks that is...

Difficult to comment on much else as it's only a short clip, feel free to post the whole track up!

I think the beats are a teeny bit too loud, or maybe they're not quite gelling with the rest of the track. You probably want to make more use of sub frequencies for your bassline too. You've got the basis of a good track here though, it's a bit sparse at the minute but it's got a nice feel to it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with considering a creative outlet one of your priorities. Sure, some people seem content to live as passive, unthinking drones, but self-expression and mastery of skills are legitimate needs, at least if you consider personal happiness to be important (which it absolutely is). It might not be 'productive' in a direct sense, but to the extent that it makes a positive contribution to the person you are when you're dealing with more tangible things (by making you happier, among other things), it contributes to your productivity anyway.

I'm guessing you might have read it already, but I think you'd like Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (sp?)

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: dissapointments and frustrations
« on: February 03, 2016, 02:44:22 pm »
On one level disappointment is just about having realistic expectations and having the right challenge in the first place. I used to get discouraged over and over because my focus was on 'making tracks that sound like professional releases' when I knew very little about how to get there.

These days my focus is just on learning and improving. I've hit a wall with the track I've been working on, and sure it's frustrating, because I got so much closer to finishing it than anything I've worked on before, and for a while I thought I'd nailed it. But this time I see it as a pointer to a new challenge (learning more about synthesis), instead of seeing it as a failure to finish a track.
