Doesn't sound too compressed or sidechained.. you could probably get away with a bit more to be honest, though that doesn't mean you should necessarily

I want to do a remix/remake of Olmec Heads - Spiritualised and could use some pointers on how to make the sound that starts where that clip does. Hopefully pretty straightforward, cheers peeps

'sup peeps.

I'm starting to hit the limits of my production knowledge with this so I'm gonna shelve it for a bit while I go to synth school.

I could really use some detailed feedback on this, in particular which bits of it sound good enough to be part of a professional track and which don't. I've been working on it so long I can't tell any more. I've been working pretty much entirely in headphones too, so people with decent monitor setups.. hello :)

The second buildup is gonna get changed out and I know the panning/stereo image needs some work.. apart from that, shoot.

Also I can't decide if the title sucks (it's a reference to the original inspiration for the track), or if it's just corny enough to get away with :D

I'm thinking of putting the stems up if anybody wants to copy, tweak, remix or just downright steal bits of it.. let me know

Thanks y'all!

it already takes 20 min to load it...
Yikes!

That sample is nearly 9 minutes long :D which sound did you mean?

  • Books - Particularly nonfiction books about law, science, the economy, or politics.

Interesting. So do you think of reading those kinds of books as a creative source in themselves, or is it just an activity that makes the creative process easier for you?

Rolling off at 17k probably isn't the reason why your hats sound a bit muffled - they could still sound very bright without anything above that frequency. It's probably the samples you've used in the first place not having a lot of high-end to them

Hey,

There's some weird chord/melody combinations going on in this, I'm guessing that's not totally deliberate but I could be wrong

Mix-wise this sounds pretty decent to me. Ideas-wise, I'm gonna struggle to explain this a bit but it's a bit full on with the feels for my liking, and could use a bit more subtlety and contrast, rather than just building up to full feels (lol), drop, build-up to full again, drop again.

Different genre but this is kind of what I'm getting at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y19KavBM9k0 (gratuitous opportunity to drop some Matt Lange)

In that track the breakdown starts at 2:13 and is quite evocative, but when the beat comes back in again, the track is quite sparse and brooding. For that to work all the elements of your track have to stand up on their own, rather than relying on everything going on at once to give the track a feeling of fullness. The melodic elements you've built your track out of are interesting, but maybe not quite interesting enough. Try having just a few of them going at once with the beat and bassline, and see if it's still listenable. Hope that helps..

I would ease off on the sidechaining a little. There's also not a lot of high-end in your mix - your hats and other percussion sound pretty muffled which is very un-trap :D that gun-cocking sound is a nice touch though.

Keep working on it, musically I like this.

The kick sounds a bit weak and doesn't have any real high-end, but otherwise I like the percussion.

That main synth has a lot of mid-low end that sounds too high to be the bassline but too low to be part of the main riff. I would try high-passing it and programming a separate bassline with the same notes underneath.

That clap needs to come up in the mix, although I would use less reverb on it (relatively anyway). The high synth on the other hand is maybe a bit loud. Or it might work better with some of those higher frequencies taken out, but it's your call.

In the breakdown sections those keys sound like they're hitting a tiny bit too early - try pushing them back a tiny bit and see if it sounds any better to your ears.

Nice vibe though man!

I've been listening to some of the stuff I was making back when I had a Virus B.. never really appreciated at the time how good the sounds were that came out of that thing. Dayum
