Sound Design / How to make the lead-ish sound in pay no mind by Madeon?
« on: January 26, 2016, 02:47:40 pm »
its basically the only main sound in the beginning besides the guitar. it kinda sounds like strings to me? I'm just getting really sick of using supersaws for everything haha. any help would be great!

it takes some willpower but keeping your volume at a safe level is very crucial. of course it's fun listening to it if it's blasting you in the face, but that often translates to a sub optimal mix. i know i get a better mix 100% of the time if the volume isn't super loud(this is partly due to ear fatigue and partly due to the fact that everything sounds better loud). i turn it up every once and a while, but usually only every hour or so for one play through.

i'm actually gonna disagree with the others haha, it sounds very empty to me. i also think the reversed sounds in the beginning could be a lot better if they ended right when the kick hit. the way they keep going for a sec after the kick hits sounds very off to me. the build to the drop sounds very empty too, and there isn't any tension building up to the drop. more risers and sweeps would help with that. the transitions overall could use some work. i like that you tried something different with the panning on the synths at the drop though! the lead that's panned to the right though could use some work though, maybe try a delay that's sidechained to the lead itself so it only plays after the lead? idk just experiment more in the future to make more interesting leads, because that one sounds pretty dry and uninteresting to me. remember though this is all imo so take it with a grain of salt haha. i hope this helps tho!

Thanks! yeah I thought the same thing with the kick, I actually brought it down a bit before I posted the final(this) version, so I guess that's one thing I definitely need to focus on now haha. thanks again man!

it's a cool song dude! one thing that really bothers me tho is that the vocal seems super out of place at the beginning to me.

hey man, I think my main issue with this song is that it kinda sounds unfinished. don't get me wrong, its not bad at all, but I think it just sounds very bare to me. it might be because I don't really listen to this type of music, but it doesn't really grab my attention. really good mix tho! and I do think the plucks could use some more stereo info

ummmm I'm not 100% sure if I'm right, but I think phasing is when 2 waveforms are stacked and one is inverted so it cancels them both out. idk for sure though!

huh that's so weird man. are there any plugs or automation on the master channel? also try putting the sample on a different audio track to see if it goes away

are you in ableton? (I'm not sure how to do this in other daws) make sure to make a small fade at the beginning and end of the parts of the samples you cut up! that can make a pop

hmm it might be a compressor that's making the pop? maybe try turning off each channel until it's gone.

ohhhh ok thank you! I'll definitely read up on that
