Mixing/Mastering / Re: Setting Sub Levels

oh I mean that it's like -4db on ableton's spectrum, not the peak meter. my kick varies track by track; sometimes the sub of my kick is the same level as my sub bass (not at the same time of course), while other times it's -12db and not as low(madeon-ish kicks)

it reaaalllly depends on the type of music u make, but for trap-ish stuff I usually have my sub hit around -6 to -4 dB. it depends on how loud the other elements are too though. I agree with mussar, reference a ton

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Komplete
« on: June 03, 2016, 08:37:00 pm »
massive, fm8, kontakt, battery(i just use its drum samples), absynth, and guitar rig are all things i use everyday from komplete, which would've been super expensive if i just bought them separately. i'm not gonna lie, it was overwhelming when i first got it(i'd only been producing for about a year), but personally, the joy and inspiration that comes from getting new software/equipment is incomparable, so i was in a creative overdrive for a solid few months after getting it.

yes! this would be so much fun honestly

I don't know about feed me, but I know madeon loves making snares, so I'm pretty certain what I said was along the lines of what he was talking about. plus he was talking about it recently on twitter and mentioned it. not to discredit what you guys said, but try what I mentioned!

I think what they're talking about is layering drum samples. If you're layering the top end of the drum with the bottom end, moving the bottom end to hit a few milliseconds after the top end will usually make it hit harder or sound better than eqing it for hours will. (I'm talking about snares btw. haven't tried it with kicks, but I'm sure it's the same principle)

3 years in and I'm actually really confident and happy with my production skills,  but arrangement and composition is a pitfall for me. I've spent a majority of my time honing production techniques, and I think that makes it way easier to get my ideas down, but I wish I would've spent a lot more time working on composition

that article is super interesting. it's kind of bittersweet that the loudness war is finally coming to an end bc I've just recently been able to get my stuff as loud, if not louder than a lot of big releases with minimal compression/limiting haha

oh yeah, what eidolon said too. being very specific about where your sounds fall in the frequency spectrum is crucial. stereo image is also a super important aspect of perceived loudness too, but be careful about that because if everything is wide and nothing is in the middle it'll sound weak af
