WIPs / Re: I made Neuro like its 2012

it sounds so good dude. this is super nitpicky but I really don't like the reverby snap that you used throughout the track. maybe once or twice, but I think a little variation in that would be a lot better(imo). also I think more atmosphere woult do this song some good. other than that though this is really solid! nice work man

I usually just use iTunes

recently I've been using Porter robinson's remix of the Thrill by nero, Language by porter robinson, Technicolor by Madeon, and Grey's remix of Papercut by zedd . I loveee the mix and feeling of those four so much

WIPs / Re: How do I make my leads sound more smooth and not so raw?
« on: January 07, 2016, 12:50:11 pm »
Yeah I agree this is for the wip section. but to answer your question, proper eqing is a huuuuge part of getting a smooth sound. along with subtle uses of chorus, phasers, and reverb. also if you sidechain a delay/reverb to your lead, it can make it more interesting and sound smoother

edit: btw I didn't listen to the example because I'm in school atm, those are just some general tips that I thought would help

In regards to adding in atmosphere, if your using Ableton you can use the resonator audio effect to tune an atmospheric recording to a certain key that way it sits in your song better... but Im guessing your using fl studio.

yep I use ableton! I could probably get some cool textures if I used the resonator on a reverb, then used the grain delay, and resampled it. thanks for the idea dude!

I like this a lot. I'm going for a similar style.

I don't have any critique of the existing content, it's quite good.

I would maybe add atmosphere to the intro (as eidolon mentioned) and in the latter part where you have the repeated chords (1:55-2:30ish) I think vocal chops or some kind of additional melodies would be really good. I'm always just adding more and more melodic content til I cant fit anymore, though, haha.

thanks man! yeah I actually worked on the atmospheres all last night haha, and hmm maybe. I've been wanting to try out vocal chops so it could be cool

i think one of the most effective things i've been doing lately has been writing the whole song and getting the structure done before i start really producing it. i don't do this every time, but when i have it's super helpful.

the resonance at the beginning kinda hurts my ears. this sounds really cool though. if you can pull it off, i think instead of having it go back to kinda soft after 1:11 you could try doing something like in spectrum by zedd, and icarus by madeon. you know like the big saw chords and a kick and maybe a cymbal/crash? I think it'd be really cool if you did that but had the first saw chord be like a short stab, and then it'd be quiet for a sec and then 3 more big kick/saw chord hits and so on. idk if that made any sense but do you kinda get what i mean?

Sound Design / Re: SERUM Tips & Tricks

on the topic of dimension expander....whether its with serum, massive, or the xfer plugin--should this be avoided on bass sounds due to phase issues in mono? It makes my basses sound so much bigger and better, but I'm worried that it has that downside too it....maybe try to isolate the <100/150hz to another channel and get away with dimension-expanding the midbass?

imo you should always isolate everything in your basses below 150hz into a separate channel. it just gives you so much more control. if you do make the lows/sub a separate channel then yeah the dimension expander should be no problem!

Sound Design / Re: The Kick Designing Thread: Click, Punch, Thump!
« on: January 06, 2016, 07:47:20 pm »
I can never get kicks to sound the way I want through layering. I usually find a sample with the transient and highs that I like the most, and then find a kick with the lows that I like the most. then I eq them together but they always seem "disconnected" from each other no matter how I eq them. does anyone have any advice on fixing this/getting better at layering kicks?

definitely do NOT cut at 100hz. I'd say high passing at 30hz would be good in most cases.

Sound Design / Re: Metallic Sounds
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:23:41 pm »
delays with very small times (like 1-5 milliseconds) and high feedback make some really cool metallic sounds. automating the time is also really fun
Fun fact: this is the operation behind Ableton's resonator

it amazes me how many effects are actually built off the use of delay

Sub always > No Sub.

That being said, I live in a 450 sq ft. studio in a building that has quiet hours - So I've been considering getting a SubPac. Anyone have experience with one?

i'd also like to know if anyone here uses the subpac. i've been considering one for a while but i can't go demo one so i'm kinda weary. it seems a little gimmicky to me
