Mixing/Mastering / Re: Acoustic Treatment
« on: January 19, 2016, 05:18:25 pm »
Uhh that room sucks :/ Im sorry. Like it will be really hard to put up basstraps which are the most important parts when it comes to acoustic treatment.

U could setup some normal acoustic foam plates but Im afraid it wont do you much good since your room is not so symmetrical.

I'd suggest you try the monitors out without wasting money on acoustic treatment. If you feel you need some then buy but I would recommend not buying any. You should check out some tutorials and advice on acoustic treatment. (im in a hurry and I didnt find the document I was looking for but google is ur friend here.)

To be honest im afraid acoustic treatment wont do much good in your room.

About to wrap this bitch up and leave it rot in the graveyard of broken dreams.

Heres the latest version

-lowered the kick volume
-changed the snare
-some tweaks
-slightly less reverb

Id appreciate your opinion on this. Im afraid I have become numb to this mix and I am not quite sure if somethings fucked up.

It's a bit too raw to give proper feedback. I feel a sub bass would beef that clip up well.

It's cool but as I said it's too raw and too short for proper feedback.

The kick is really weak. The dance chords are overpowering the whole mix.

I would lower the dance piano /chords and add some more sidechain. It is really hard to give feedback because all I can hear are the dance chords. I also feel the ooh ah screams are a bit out of place.

Some chord variation would be cool too, because it's a bit too repetitive as it is now.

With some tweaking and fixing it's a solid dance track.

I really enjoyed this. I love the fact that is is not maximized to fuck and it was very nice to listen to it.

The arrangement seems to be pretty solid.

I'd add some more percussive elements and I'd beef up the snare a bit and add some snare fillers or something similar.

It's simple but it works extremely well. You could make some of the synths like the arp a bit louder. Some extra reverb would work too.

Bionic Delay is pretty nice. It's funky.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Don't trust your ears!

There are no golden rules or methods for mixing professionally, in electronic music anyway.

I'm not a professional by any means but it is quite obvious that in the world of electronic music (atleast in our clippy red world) the "normal" "standard" rules don't really apply. Of course, some basic guidelines will get you a long way but as stated in this thread there are no magic rules or books.

"Trusting your ears" in my opinion shouldnt be taken literally. Of course if youre in a 6m2 square room with a 12" subwoofer your mixes will no doubt sound fucked up. Ok that was a bit over the top but by being aware of your surroundings, situation, gear etc you can make up for those elements which will make your monitoring environment fucked up.

Spectrums and analyzers will most definitely help you mix and analyze stuff but they just can't make up the importance of the aspect of listening. It's fucking music. You can't listen to a painting to see if it's perfect. In my opinion the same goes with music, you can't trust blindly on spectrums and analyzers even though they will help you out.

What you can do however, is to learn to acknowledge the flaws is in ur monitoring setup and trying to overcome these flaws by being aware of whats fucked up, treating your room or anything that will improve the monitoring setup. Spectrums will help but won't make up the importance of listening. As cliche as it sounds: learn your gear and monitoring environment.

This is just my personal view on the matter. I still quite strongly believe that spectrums shouldn't be trusted blindly.

For me, the line between the two is so vague it isn't really there. I like to think that I'm sculpting a sculpture while composing and mixing, it all just comes together slowly.

Of course, after I'm done with the track I try to fix little stuff, but mostly the mix is done while I'm making the track. I find it difficult to do finishing touches because it is really easy to get carried away and keep changing stuff forever and ever.

I also find that it is good to get the most important parts mixed good right away. I get a bad feeling if I leave something mixed sloppy laying around in the mix but that still happens.

Gotta rework the intro as it's too abrupt in my opinion. You can definitely lower the kick drum and I'm not feeling the long release on the lead with the slow LFO modulation. Not sure if that is the correct way to describe it but it's the focal point during the breakdown at around 2:10 mark. I think that is holding the overall track back. It's sounds really good when it's all together after that breakdown—I agree it's a track worth not giving up on.

Thanks for the feedback!

Which kick did u think was too loud? In the intro or in the main parts? I think they're both a bit too loud.

I'm completely blown away by this. Absolutely amazing.

I can't find anything wrong with it, at least not on my headphones. I absolutely love the percussion. I also love the fact that you've taken a simple progression and you've turned it into something amazing.

I sincerely have no critique to give you, I am sorry.

Before: All kinds of complex MasteringTool9001's

Now: A limiter

No but the problem for me with using a lot of plugins on the master is that I get so carried away with it that it usually sounds worse than the mix. It all depends on the track really, sometimes some multiband compression will do magic, sometimes it wont. Same goes with everything. But Yeah I still use EQ's to cut shit when I'm done with the track.

What I've noticed, for me, using multiple plugins or complex chains just tends to fuck my mixes up. I might change my mind and preferences as I do stuff. I dunno. Mastering is overrated imo.

The intro is nice but as soon as it hits the laser part it's not so nice.

I'd like to hear some sidechain, maybe not much, but some. Now it just seems the laser thingy is sweeping trough the drums and they cant be heard at all. I'd lower the lazer resonance, it's really stabby now.

Also, you could turn up the drums a bit in the intro too.

Some variation would go a long way. The main part is too repetitive now, and I feel some other kids of lazors as fills / stabs would benefit your track. You could also work on your chords more. I personally find them somehow cheesy, I am not sure whether it is the composition or the synth.

This is a project I started over a year ago. I've been working on it during this time and the track has gone trough a few versions.

I feel it would be a shame to let this track go, because I'm kinda feeling the composition. It is not my finest work and there is some mud, but I'm trying my best at polishing this track. I might have made some bad decisions while composing but I feel this track is somehow salvageable.

However, the mixing is something I'm quite insecure about. I am aware the mix is pretty crowded and I am not too certain if I should remove something. I'd like to hear your opinions on the mix. Anything you don't like? Anything you'd change? Anything feeling out of place?

Thank you in advance.

Fuck me those drums are solid.

I'd try to reduce the resonance/ringing on the flute especially in the beginning. I'd also take it a bit easier with the panning, now it feels somehow hectic (just a preference though)
