Yeah the lfo is "out of time" you are right about that, gonna tweak that. Thanks for pointing that out! The snare thingy and the buildup in general will need some more work too, gonna get back to it when I get back to the "studio" lmao. Thanks for the feedback seriously it helps me out a fuckton!

You're welcome mate. Maybe you can help me out in return, I've been trying to ID this tune that sounds very Wolfgang Gartner/Deadmau5-y but I don't think it's either of them.. I've done a little remake of it, any ideas?

Of course I will help you out, I am not home at the moment and I dont have headphones with me but I will get back to it when I get back home!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing On Monitors vs Headphones
« on: February 20, 2016, 11:17:01 am »
Both.

Headphones are like microscopes where speakers are like looking through glasses. Best metaphor i can come up with.

But you should always be biased towards monitors, because that's how your music will react in an open environment compared to an isolated aspect.

I use both for different reasons, but you should try to match quality of speakers and headphones.

Speakers relate to headphones, but headphones don't always relate to speakers. (unless you drop like 2grand USD on some headphones, then i'd be expecting some things...)

Damn this is a really good explanation.

Wow immediately thought of Wolf Gang Gartner...I think he's probably one of my favorite producers to be honest, so I regard your music highly.... wish I was on this level, feeling like a scrub right now lolol... Kudos! Awesome job :)

Wow thanks haha :D Wolfgang Gartner is a huge idol of mine and a source of inspiration. Thanks :)

Lots of cool stuff going on in this track, I like it. Those stabs at 1:45 onward are sick. There's only a couple of things I'd highlight, which is that filter LFO on that synth that starts at 2:01 sounds out of time with the track. There's something similar going on with that snare at 3:14 just before the drop. I think the snare is probably in time, but the way that synth before it is pulsing back and forth makes it sound like it isn't.

Haha yes thanks for the feedback :D

The "Glitch" is some random groove sample reversed :D I kinda like it tho but i might change it.

You are right I probably should work on the buildups a bit more.

Hey guys!

This a track that I've been working on for ages. It is now almost finished and it's only missing an intro.

I'd like to hear you opinion on the mix, arrangement and anything else you can think of. The track is cheesy but fuck it yolo.

Thanks in advance!

Those synths are spot on but I feel they're a bit overpowering. The snare feels like its fighting to stay alive and I feel it could have some more low end to it. The hats could be stronger too but thats up to you.

Seriously pretty crazy growls.

The melody + chords work really well but I feel the mix is lacking dynamics, it sounds too compressed for this type of a track.

You could also try giving a shave to a few sounds with an EQ because I can hear some mud in the mix.

The drop is awesome!

Some notes:

- more FX and micro transitions
- more percussion
- the snare could be very very way more stronger (just a bit)

As said before fx and foley would crank this badboy up to a whole new level. Its a really solid track and I really like it.

I prefer monitors. It's not necessary to monitor on both. Its hard to explain but mixing on headphones makes you make bad mixing decisions (not always). Headphones sound more "detailed" but monitors will most definitely give you a better overall image of the mix.

There are plenty of articles on google on this matter.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as innate talent. There are people who have had more exposure to an artform or skill, or people who have had more practice. But there are no people who are born gifted with no previous stimuli. Everyone has the potential to be a great composer as long as they put their 10,000 hours in. The people who pick up an instrument or DAW for the first time, and immediately have abilities beyond others who have spent more time practicing, usually already have a skill where there is overlap. Or, in some cases of autism the brain is wired in such a way where there is a natural ability, but this is extremely rare. For most people it just takes years of practice.

I personally was extremely lucky to be exposed to music even before I was born. My mother consciously sang and played violin to me while I was still in the womb because she wanted me to have musical abilities. Then when I was born she consciously taught me methods such as the Kodaly approach to further my musical abilities. Even still, if you listen to my early tracks they're absolute garbage. It still took years of practice to create anything worth listening to.

Glad someone said it out loud. There is no "natural talent" imo. It always grinds my gears when people say "hes so talented" etc. What I do think that some people are better at learning, and have a better mindset than other people. Some people might have a higher IQ than others but it doesn't mean they're talented. It all comes down to practice, and where you focus your mental energy.

The key is practice. Some people are just better at learning and it is often labeled as "talent". Maybe the real talent is the ability to learn well.

Holy shit that intro and atmosphere are amazing.

This is pretty good considering you've only produced for a year.

The lead that hits at 1.47 is too aggressive imo, and the mixdown becomes somehow muddy here. You should maybe lowpass the the lead and add some reverb to it if you have room in the mix. I would personally change the lead sound too, it sounds a bit... toyish now.

I think the transitions are pretty good, but the drum fills and the part at 1.47 feel unfinished.

Yeah so I would fix/change the lead. I would also try to make the mix a bit more spacious, the chorus parts feel somehow exhausting at the moment. It could be that your master is pushing too hard but I feel you could carve some room in the spectrum too.

If you need more advice on something specific just ask, I like your style.

I'd recommend a macbook pro. I know people say "They're too expensive for the power you actually get" but i think just the overall quality of the parts and the OS in general is unparalleled. Besides, mac has always had a prominent place in music production. I got my macbook pro 13in retina with an upgraded 2.9ghz i5 and upgraded 16gb of RAM for about 1500.
Don't want to start this war here, but imho it's not just bells and whistles with Macs. There is also quite solid history of OS updates that messed up plugin compatibility that sometimes even developers had to step in. Last time with El.Captain. Apple doesn't give a damn about backward compatibility, so your ability to use certain plugins will depend only on their developers being active.
Windows has it's flaws too, but from my experience backward compatibility is stellar. Last year I've autoupdated from win7 to win10 and except two plugins needing re-authorisation everything worked like a charm.

Too lazy to build myself. So that's a non-option. Although I will want space for customization and additions.
Too bad. Pre-made gaming PC's are made for graphics power, meaning the CPU is on the same priority level as GPU. For music production, I'd spend a bit less on GPU and bit more on CPU as that's where all your rendering is happening. Having said that ... I'm running 2.5GHz quad core laptop CPU and it's more than enough.

I wouldn't want to go with a gaming pc company if possible.
I would spend a lot on my cpu, ssd and ram. gpu will be secondary.

You should really just pick your parts and pay someone to put it together if ur too lazy. U wont find any great computers out there unless u pay a shitton for a "gaming" pc. Just saying, you would save hundreds of dollars.

You could probably get a great pc for producing for like 800 dollars which is almost half the price you are willing to pay.

I dunno sometimes it feels like KRK is a pair of glorified desktop speakers but they're the cheapest out there their price/quality ratio is good.

I'm pretty happy with them, but I would buy something different if I was loaded with money.
