Yeah I figured the break was related to something. I dunno it's a cool idea, maybe try making it a tiny bit less abrupt i dunno XD

God damn nice work with the basses and synths.

But, the percussion in this track is lacking, and I feel the track is almost too minimal at times. The percussion feel sloppy and lack rhythm. I'd make the percussion more fast phased and rhytmic, using a volumeshaper or some shit like that. Also the snare and snares feel kind of weird to me. I feel that a strong snare or a snareclap would support a minimal track like this reallly well.

The percussion levels are a bit of too. They're too loud and in your face in my opinion. I'd make them more subtle, but snappier.

Some more FX's and some kind of reverby stabs would also do justice for this track. Also, im not sure about the 808 trappy part, it sounds pretty weird but it's nice to hear some different styles.

The lowpassed percussion is cool, but it leaves the high end of the track kinda hollow. This is just my opinion, but some stabby high end rich percussion here and there would bring some interesting elements to this track. Also, some hiend rich snares and fx would beef this up too.

The break? at 1.50 is kinda weird, i guess it's supposed to be like an message of some sorts but it feels to sudden to me.

Overall i think this is really good, i feel it's a mellow background or menu music or something. I also like all the details u've put in there. These were just some of my thoughts.

Take it easy on the compressors / limiters / clipping. There are literally no dynamics.

You don't alwasy need to compress absolutely everything, and when you do a master compression / clipping / limiting the compression will just multiply and fuck shit up.

Ask yourself if a sound needs compressing, more than often some sounds do not need any compressing necessarily.

Really solid, reminds me of Boards of Canada for some reason.

I really cant say much, it's really well mixed, but sometimes I feel the mix is too crowded or slightly muddy.

I wish I could give some more feedback but honestly I cant think of anything.

It's just EQ and volume. You can try to sidechain the kick eq to the snare but this often leads to weird sounding kicks.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: No Music Background...Thoughts?
« on: February 23, 2016, 11:49:38 am »
I have no background in music and while I can make decent compositions I often feel like I have no clue what fuck I'm doing. For example sometimes writing chords feels frustrating because I don't know how to continue and I just fuck around with notes and stuff until something coherent comes out. I have no idea how to write harmonies or anything cool like that.

I think knowing theory wouldn't hurt, but it's not something you'll absolutely need to be a DJ Bassmeister 808. In electronic music it's a easier to get away without having a musical background but you can definitely hear if someone has a background in music.

Of course everyone should know that you should (usually) stick to some scale etc. You can go a long way with basic theory. I just wish I had played piano or somehting when I was younger, I'm sure it would've had a great influence on my music.

Very cool.

I'd love to see the project file to break each part down. I do a lot of abrupt, syncopated cuts in my song. So I'd be interested in seeing yours.

To be honest, the project file is an abomination.

Here:

I do all my shit in one pattern and then somehow manage to clusterfuck my way to coherent music. I use a lot of automation but my patterns synths etc are really really simple.

Kinda switching to Live gradually because of FL-studios clusterfuckyness.

This is plain awesome. This is the kind of music that I started to listen when i discovered electronic music. Keep it like this, don't make too many changes! The "drop" and breakdown work well too I like how it's not overdone by those mindless and annoying snare rolls :D

Thanks :) I was pretty afraid this track was gonna turn out cheesy as fuck, "Monstercat"-like so to speak. Anyway i think it turned out ok, the only thing I fear is too cheesy is the annoying "solo" but fuck it.

Thanks to anyone who gave feedback I'll be sure to return the favor.

Nothing. I'm just a regular guy in his 20's dreaming of making it and getting all the money, bitches and fame.

Allright, I added and fixed shit based on your opinions. It should be pretty much done. "Mastering" is also pretty much done, not much to it tho.

Any last critique before I wrap this bitch up and leave it to rot?

Yeah the lfo is "out of time" you are right about that, gonna tweak that. Thanks for pointing that out! The snare thingy and the buildup in general will need some more work too, gonna get back to it when I get back to the "studio" lmao. Thanks for the feedback seriously it helps me out a fuckton!

You're welcome mate. Maybe you can help me out in return, I've been trying to ID this tune that sounds very Wolfgang Gartner/Deadmau5-y but I don't think it's either of them.. I've done a little remake of it, any ideas?

It needs a fuzzy bassline since the lead/melody is pretty weak by it self. Try using the melody notes as a bassline with a powerful funky buzzy kind of synth. Some additional percussion would do it some justice too.

It's distorting pretty bad, not sure if thats what you're after. I dont really like the melody, its pretty annoying but the bass complextro stuff is pretty cool!

I'd make the lead/melody thingy less weird and take it easier on compression/clipping whatever you're doing here. The vocal chops sound really nice.

Is that Enigma im hearing?

Anyway, sounds really fucking good, the mixing is pristine as fuck. I would love to give some constructive criticism but i honestly cant, you seem to know what you're doing.

Maybe the crashes could be a bit louder?
