WIPs / Re: 2ND RELEASE OF THE YEAR! Future/R&B/Electronic
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:52:42 pm »
The composition is really solid. I also feel the beat is mixed quite well.

However...

The vocals are too loud compared to the beat. It really feels like it's out of place, making the mix sound a bit weird in my opinion. Also I feel the vocals are missing some clarity.

Maybe some subtle sidechain on the vocals would do some justice to the track.

Anyway, very nice composition and a nicely mixed beat. The vocals are something that bother me.

I like the composition but I'd take it bit easier with the clipping.

The mix is super weird. I cant really tell which parts are yours and which are stems if this is a remix. The drums are super quiet, like absurdly quiet. It makes the track feel really weird with all the sidechain.

I'd suggest balancing the synths and drums.

Im gonna have to disagree with this one.

It is true that freq analyzers will help you out by providing visual feedback, it is still not something you should rely on. It can help you to mix but ultimately you should always make mixing decicions by ear, not by some visual spectrums.

Sencondly, all tracks arent similar on the spectrum and you shouldnt compare them by the spectrum. Sometimes they could be exactly the same but most of the time your mix shouldnt probably look exactly the same as ir reference mix.

This is just my opinion but dont rely blindly on visual spectrums and feedback.

I don't.

The composition is really fucking cool. The atmosphere is spot on and everything is smooth.

My main concern is the weird main part. It seems like you want it to have that "wall of sound" feel. It just feels too squashed. I think if you would try to increase the dynaminc range on the chorus/mainpart it would improve the track a lot.

The kick and snare samples feel pretty weird too, maybe you should work on them a bit more, I'd suggest making them more defined. Reducing the limiting/maximizing could do some magic to them.

This is all just me, do as you please, but I feel this track would benefit from a softer mix a lot!

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Overcoming negative thoughts

I've been producing for years now. At the beginning when I was a absolute noob everything was exciting and fun. Now, everything I do just sounds like shit. At the same time I know I could potentially make something awesome if I just set my mind to it. The problem is, making music has become extremely exhausting mentally. I'm always doubting myself and I feel really bad about myself.

I havent been able to make anything I'm proud of for the last year or so. I can work on a track really hard, but when it's finished I just feel the track is shitty and just ditch it.

I have no idea how to overcome these feelings. It all just feels depressing and not fun. At the same time, I continue to work on music, which is kinda funny.

This is probably something every producer goes through but I don't like this at all. These feelings just put out my creative flame. I know I have improved a lot during my years but still the anxiety and depression considering music production just increases as I get better.

I would just want to have that optimistic and exited feeling again. Sometimes it just feels theres no point in making music. I've just stopped trying, nowadays I just make music to extinguish my urge to create something.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Let's talk clipping
« on: January 09, 2016, 12:32:37 pm »
Clipping is absolutely a great way to fatten up individual channels, what you should never do is clip the master. Other than that clipping is a great tool

Weirdly enough, if you listen to Onra, the guy has some super minor clipping post-master to give it analogue warmth...whatever that means, LOL

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you can get warmth from digital clipping.

Digital clipping just removes bits from the input audio. The bitloss results in a distorted sound. Digital clipping =! analog warmth.

Overall its sounds pretty fuckin good. Some old school vibes, and dank soundscapes. The mixing sounds solid to me but I can hear some things that could use some fine tuning (some delays could be a bit longer etc.)

I'd like to give you some more criticism but this sounds really good.

Really great composition. The kick is too punchy for my taste, but it all comes down to your mixing preferences.
