Mixing/Mastering / Re: High Cutting Vocals
« on: April 02, 2016, 07:05:31 am »
^ Do you mean cutting vs shelving filters? Anything that an EQ does is called filtering.

For a remix I made recently, I cut a bit too much of the highs for a stupid "buildup" effect, and the vocals ended up sounding like the singer has a cold. So don't cut too much!

Yeah, in S1 you can render any audio or midi clip to audio from the right-click menu or with a keyboard shortcut, I think it applies only the track insert FX to it. FL has that internal recording feature, so I should probably learn how to use that...

That was scary!

Studio One can bounce/freeze a clip directly to a new track, it makes this sort of thing really fast. Is this not a common feature in DAWs? I miss it in FL studio for sure.

Hope this fits mixing/mastering... I'm still a novice in many respects, but there is one "pattern" I've noticed while giving feedback on WIPs. Namely, trying to make a hard hitting bass with these components:
- Reverb in low mid frequencies
- Low mid and bass frequencies as wide as can be

Reverb not only guarantees muddiness, but also removes all the impact from pauses in the bassline. Stereo width tends to move the sound towards whatever is the opposite of "in-your-face". Not saying that everything should be mono, just that it may be easier to achieve the effect you want by limiting the extreme stereo width to high frequencies.

I mean OP didn't even have to search... there is a sticky on this topic.

If you're going to promote your music then at least make sure you're clear what you want to sound like.
...and make sure you actually sound like it.

To me this is the most important thing. I want to convince myself that I can come up with new tracks in the style I'm going for, before starting to think about marketing a brand. Other than that, I think you are ready when you feel like people should hear your music :) I don't think you can really lose much by sending a couple of emails.

Agree with Wontolla's general analysis on True Colors but I want to elaborate a bit!

The intro goes:
D Cadd9/E  Dm/F Dm/F E7 Ebmaj7

The verse:
D Cadd9/E Dm/F Gm D/F# Bb D/F# Dm/F Bbmaj7

You could also interpret it as D mixolydian with the occasional borrowed Dm and Bb. I'd like to think that part of the coolness comes from the fact that the D major chord functions as a borrowed dominant for Gm, which makes it sound more "relieving".

^ My favorite scale to jam on the guitar. I blame Yngwie Malmsteen.

Agree on the Zedd track, "Addicted to a memory" also has cool progressions and melodies.

Yeah, you just have to be careful with the edits so that it doesn't sound like it's just transcribed wrong :) Might be better to use the original notes, then add some ornaments and glitches/repeats to them, or edit note lengths and stuff?

WIPs / Re: House/electro thingie I'm almost done with

That transition to the drop is amazing. I don't have much to complain about the mix. It does feel like my ears get tired really fast listening to this, so maybe there's too much stuff in the high end.

Thats quite on point! I would put the snare in the first part of the drop more in the middle, and make it more full. Also the intro melody+sound, well the whole intro is pretty strange.

Thanks! Good point about the snare, I haven't really paid too much attention to it. The intro, well... that's been the most troublesome part for me. I accept "strange" as I tried to make it a bit different, but I hope it's not too boring.

Something completely different!

- When the vocals kick in, I like the groove and overall sound, but there's something really dissonant in the background. I think a part of it is that ambulance(?) drone thingy, but also the piano has the sustain pedal left on which probably contributes! Actually I kind of like the ambulancey thing, it's probably not that.
- Kick could be more powerful
- Vocals definitely should be louder and have more high end
- After this buildup the track really has to blow up :) Needs a huge wall of sound.
- Is there some heavy compression in the master? The mix sounds very "wobbly" and low-quality because of that, especially after 0:44.

WIPs / Re: Worlds Project

Fun idea!

- At 0:33 there's a wrong note in the melody, it goes c#-d-b-f#, the original goes c#-d-c#-f#.
- In the buildup, the vocal synth sounds great.
- In the Goodbye part, the chord progression doesn't really fit. The original is in F# minor and your version is in D major, so for example the G in the bass is really dissonant with the melody g#-a-b

WIPs / Re: [Flowstate] Trance + The 100!
« on: March 27, 2016, 06:27:12 am »
Really good work overall! I don't really listen too much of trance, but this track has some unique qualities that keep it interesting for me.

Some comments:
- I dig the rhythm starting from 1:00. Only thing that bothers me is that this still sounds like an intro, you know, it sounds like it builds tension towards a drop that never comes. But then again I guess that's the point of progressive?
- That hit at 1:45 could sound muuuch bigger
- Vocal sample is great!
- at 2:52 the supersaws could sound bigger also, maybe just increase volume or add white noise stuff.
