Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Producing Dubstep/Glitchhop Drops
« on: March 14, 2016, 06:54:14 am »
do you think that complextro/glitch-hop drops are similar in nature?
Pretty much. A lot of popular dubstep, drumstep, complextro, and glitch use the same sounds and techniques, just different beats. Glitch trends towards randomness though, since it's supposed to be more bouncy (especially with the 16th note swing). Some people (me included) count "110bpm dubstep" as something separate from glitch hop. It's basically drumstep but faster.

The glitch track is slower, rhythmically looser, and has a swing feel on the 16th notes, plus the drop switches between elements faster.
And because I never miss a chance to plug my own stuff, here's the same track arranged as:

Ooh, can I be the dubstep guy?

The only thing I've been able to observe about it is this type of "call and response" feel all the sounds have when they're put together.

Funny you mentioned call and response. That's what makes a good drop. Usually, you'll be building the drop around one or two key elements, phrasing them with enough space to breathe, then filling in the gaps with other sounds.

Example/plug: https://youtu.be/ALB3x5pyqho?t=3m45s

The "key element" is the supersaw (and the bass under it). It trades off with a few other basses, plus there are leads trading off on top of all those.

This is a genius marketing scheme.

A bold new initiative in leveraging social media and viral marketing to seamlessly promote brand integration and media synergy, to be sure.

(I could do this all day)

There's a difference between making a clever new fusion, and adding "spice". I don't make "oriental symphonic dubstep", after all. And nothing's wrong with that.

Read them carefully and take them into consideration. That's all.

If someone took the time to leave a comment on your track, they either want to see you improve, or think you're doing fine already.

If you need to explain to people why you're special, chances are you're not.  ;) Don't forget, actions speak louder than words, and good music speaks louder than a forum post.
True. I'd like to think questions like this are rhetorical; the only real answer is music, not words.
Honestly, a lot of the answers so far don't really make anyone unique. If anything, they've highlighted how many other producers are just pouring out their souls into music and not caring about making it big. And if that's all you're going for, do you even have to be "different"?

Aw, I was hoping for something based on a more concrete theme, like Paint A Picture.

I always pre-write before opening the session. Not necessarily a bad thing, but then there are the times I come up with a sick drop and have no clue what to do with it.

And there are some musical ideas I use too much, like the Em-G-D-C/A progression, or always putting a half time bridge in house tracks. The trick is to find patterns before they become clichés.

Many people believe that creating images in Photoshop is not an art.

I've literally never heard anyone say that, and that's not what the article is saying.

Social media isn't a huge problem for me, but I've been fighting other distractions, for a pretty long time; it's getting bad enough to start making a daily schedule. But the real question is, how much "wasted time" has a positive influence on your creativity? I've been watching a ton of review shows lately, and some of Todd in the Shadows' thoughts on pop music actually helped my songwriting, by giving another perspective on how composition is "supposed" to work. Is that me trying to justify wasting time on YouTube, or is it something I'll actually miss out on if I try cutting it out of my life?

Technically I was writing music since I was 8 so 18 years, and I'm still sub-par to where I want to be.
Right, no one's ever "good enough". Skrillex has already more or less rewritten how EDM works, and he's still changing his sound every week.

89
I say this a lot, but getting where you want to be isn't just about skill, it's about vision. There are thousands and thousands of producers that can put together a beat that sounds good, but how many of them are making something original, and how many are just following bigger producers on, like you mentioned, Suicidesheep or Monstercat?
Making good music is as much about listening as it is about actual production.

E: that came out kind of pessimistic. Anyway, what I mean is just that it'll be a while, even after your technique is in a good place, but if you keep listening to a lot of different music, and don't just try to copy one style, you'll be fine.

Maximus has band splitting and saturation on each band, it comes with producer edition starting with FL12.
