WIPs / Re: WIP (obviously) ... bass house-ish stuff

there sometimes are settings in your synth that allow your lfo to restart when you play a new note, otherwise the lfo will continue to oscillate throughout your song without restarting this is most likely the problem.

Played guitar for about 9 years before starting to learn production and its great to be able to play along with my tracks, sometimes i wont even add the guitar in but play a melody and then transfer it over to the piano roll for a synth part. On the other hand sometimes ill even record my guitar in! there seems to be a serious lack of badass guitar solos in electronic music.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: How did you learn how to make music?

One of my biggest arrangement tips is to drop your favorite tracks into your DAW and map out where things happen so you can copy the structure. I think this has helped me more than any youtube tutorial/music lesson.

I didn't know ozone 7 could export audio file types I'll have to try it out.

In regards to adding in atmosphere, if your using Ableton you can use the resonator audio effect to tune an atmospheric recording to a certain key that way it sits in your song better... but Im guessing your using fl studio.

highs/hihats are way too loud in the beginning.

I think your lfo might be out of sync, at some points it seems like its not doing a full cycle before repeating. Also I would try messing around with adding in new types of bass sounds and switching between the bass noise you have  and some new sounds, which could give this song some phrasing/verses. Mix sounds pretty clean, and I really like the weird background effects. Was that just a sample or did you use a synth?

WIPs / A day in the park
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:23:56 am »
Hey,

This is my strongest track right now, just looking for a little feedback, Ive grown really accustomed to this song so I don't know if I'm missing anything important or overlooking small errors. Please let me know if anything strikes you as odd or stands out. I'd love to receive some criticism so that I can make this track the best it can be.

The theme is a melancholy walk through the park, kind of sad happy vibe. I think it would really benefit from an experienced vocalist but those are hard to come by. I'll be posting two more tracks that are progressive midtempo over the next few days, trying to make this style my identifiable sound.

Pretty clean mixdown so far. One thing that stood out to me were the vocal chops, they don't feel like they fit this song to me. Maybe you could replace them with a pluck style synth patch or something else, the actually notes the vocal chops play are great. Just thought maybe you could try swapping them out with something else.

just an opinion so please take it with a grain of salt.  ;D

I use Max, its free, simple and it seems to do a pretty accurate job of converting my final .wav formatted files from ableton to mp3 without losing clarity. I was curious what other software might be available to do this and in your opinion what does the best job. Also I noticed there are some available options in Max to tweak the encoding algorithm and what may be the best settings for this. Thanks for any input.

Sound Design / Re: SERUM Tips & Tricks
« on: January 06, 2016, 07:06:41 pm »
One trivial thing that took me a long to figure out in serum was how sometimes when modulating a parameter with an lfo, the lfo would modulate on both sides of the center point of the knob and sometimes it would begin on the center. To toggle this setting open up the modulation matrix and click on the arrows that point like this <-> and it will change to this -> and vice versa. Super trivial but also really annoying.

Another really great thing serum can do is resynthesis where you can import a sound and serum will create a wavetable based on it. The best way I've found to import a sound from another synth is to bounce an instance of the noise you want to import to audio tuned to F#0 and -22 cents, and drop it into the 2048 tab on an oscillator. It goes over this method in the user manual. This can really open up endless possibilities.

Sound Design / Re: Intuitive Processing, Reflex Decisions, Good Habits

The way I have my template set up in ableton it does most of the basic eq for me. I route all of my drum highs through a high pass set at 1k-ish and my claps/snares at 200-ish. Then my kick I eq that individually and usually that's just cutting out problem areas that are interfering with my mix. At the end of the day this all gets run through my drum bus and compressed+parallel compressed with a final eq at the end for nitpicky stuff. This is all done without a second thought really everything is in place already when I start a new project so it's really helpful when I get close to the end of a song because I just have to make a few adjustments.

For fx, synths and bass I eq as I go because each situation calls for a different approach and it changes from song to song.
