KT Granulator was a great free fuckshitup plugin, but I just looked now and it's been updated, and you have to pay for it :/
Yeah. I was about to pay it but then I thought I could check out other granular delays. And if I may suggest, check out Melda's Multiband Granular. Imho absolutely awesome thing.

...probably not my FSU plugin of choice though. Have to second Glitch2, Effectrix and Grossbeat

Eventhough he's from completely different environment and generes, Bob Owsinsky's book "Mixing Engineer's Handbook" helped me a lot. There's nothing you wouldn't have read somewhere else already, but it's really neatly categorized and prioritized. Puts stuff in contexts.

But I'm still far from good though ... just to be clear. :D

Brace yourself. The "XXX's engine sounds better than YYY's engine" discussion is comming.

Sound Design / Re: foley/field recordings

Having a good microphone, and a good recorder, is required and expensive.
Not at all actually. Zoom gives the same mics to all the recorders. They differ only by build qualitty and functions. ...and those mics are really usable. That H1 I have is like a 99 bucks.

For really detailed or quiet sounds though, you might want something better, yeah.

It's a problem that arises for a lot of people, and there's actually a fairly straightforward explanation for it.

So long as you're using an ASIO driver in your DAW, either as a software driver or via an audio interface, if you drag the rendered track back into the DAW and play it, it should sound the same as before you exported it. I'ts because your on-board sound driver included in the computer's motherboard will often be taking over from the ASIO drivers when playing tracks back in iTunes/VLC/media players, and these drivers (especially RealTek High Definition Audio ones) will colour the sound with their own broad EQ settings.

To quickly check, right-click the volume control in the notifications tray and hit Playback Devices. Right-click the current sound device and hit Properties. Check the Enhancements tab, and un-check every option there. It'll be stuff like Room Correction, Low Frequency Adjustments, Dynamic Equalisation, etc. Once it's all unchecked, play the track again. It should be much closer to what came out of your DAW.

To wrap it up, what you're hearing in the DAW pre-render is what you should end up with in the end. If you haven't, chances are, its the PC's own audio drivers causing havoc.
This. All od the sound enhancers should be turned off.

Also, render only in samplerates you've made your track in. I did have terrible experiences with some plugins drastically changing behaviour when switched to different samplerate.

I donť like it. I almost can tell when hearing Nexus-ish piano every time. It's foolish reason, but it's made by guys behind some pretty cheesy euro-dancefloor tracks... I think it's audible. I tried it back then and everything was big, and fat and like ... forcingly effective ... I just got tired of it. Same reason I left Vengeance samples btw.

Vanguard! That was great reFX product!

Sound Design / Re: What's your opinion on Presets ?
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:34:25 pm »
just say no to presets, kids

Or learn from them, then try to make your own

the problem is most people don't.  At least when you're starting out it's better, imho, to start from a blank initialized setting and to learn from there, as opposed to reverse engineering something you don't understand.

I think the real problem is that a lot of people want to be ready, great and potentionally Garrix-out to fame as quickly as possible. In that case, learning sounddesign is an obstacle. I don't agree with it, but imho that's what happens.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: How do you get your own style?
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:28:39 pm »
Define when something is different enough to be considered as it's own sound. I find this question too subjective to worry about. What sounds fresh to you might sound familiar to others. I had so many piano based dnb tracks unfinished before I found Etherwood. Does that mean I should let them go as they officially became Etherwood-ish? I don't think so.

I agree with aaron:
Well if you're anything like mat zo, renard, or any other multi-genre producer, maybe you'll never find one and you'll continue to make whatever you feel like making all the time and no one will have a problem with it. I don't think I have one, and I still just make whatever. I'm happy with that. The only problem is it makes deciding what to put on a release pretty hard, but that's just me.

...only way to stick out is not to try fit in too much.

Or if you wanna go a bit back in time, Airbase did great trance tutorials:

...I still think they're some the best ones.

HA! Black sheep here. I tried, I really did. Piano mostly, guitar and even some flutes lol. :D ...and failed miserably every time. I know how those instruments work, how the theory works (mostly), I know what to press, but for some reason no matter how many times I play the piece again and again (like for years :D), I mess it up at some point every time. I got heavily depressed about it at times, considering quitting the hobby all together, but then I thought: F**k it. I can't perform. Whatever. That can't stop me from producing.

...funny enough, I still play all the notes in my tracks on keyboard. But have to admit, I edit them afterwards.

Big, heavy, epic. Reminds me of Love Thy Brother stuff. Really cool. :) That melody on 3:04 too simple for my taste, but my taste is probably wrong. Great job! :)

It's cool. For such a low-key piece I'd prefer some more complex melody. Or ... to have it as it is, but with some breakbeat/dnb drums underneath. But that's just my taste. I think it might do good with others ears. :)
