WIPs / Re: Welcome Home (Instrumental WIP)
« on: March 24, 2016, 06:03:09 pm »
I really love the Sound of your piano. Also the Piano Riff starting at 2:10 is really cool, it better not be a Sample ;)
I don't like the Bass Sound starting at 3:03, just doesn't fit the track imo.
Generally I really like your idea, but like many other Producers it's lacking that one special thing that would make you really stand out. I can't tell you what tough, I'm still looking for it in my own music...

I appreciate the kind words!! Nope, not a sample I actually wrote out the entire song on piano and then let the piano sit behind most of the track. Once I separated the melody by octaves and gave each layer its own place in the arrangement I made the synths and threw the midi in their respective sounds.

I think that special thing may have to do with like a general motif thats so catchy it just gets painfully stuck in your head for days? Something sort of like Porter's intro to Divinity, with that twisted/distorted vox sample. I'm not sure If I wanna get some singing on this track or just leave it instrumental and expand upon whats already there you know? I would really love to discover that special something...

WIPs / Re: Trap/Future/ProgHouse blend

Hey I think the idea is really cool and pretty original! The mix sort of bothers me because it sounds like you cut out a lot of frequencies in your instruments that didn't need to be scooped out, so I would possibly look over your eq for your sounds and see how you can balance things out better. Besides the mix there are a few things I would do differently with your transitions/dynamics and chord progressions. Keep up the good work though I love the idea

WIPs / Lo-Fi work in progress, what are your thoughts? :)
« on: March 23, 2016, 11:13:00 pm »
I started a lo-fi project recently and I would really appreciate anybody's thoughts and criticism on the track so far! Some parts aren't too perfect but don't be afraid to say whatever you feel

That 'press release' makes me want to avoid ever listening to your music.

A bit mean spirited, no?

I dig it, very dark sound and can be shaped into something cool if you add some more layers and spend time developing it more

WIPs / Re: "Calling Sirens" opinions?

I think the reason some of your friends don't like your track too much is because your composition is flawed. I really don't want you to take offense here but the timing of your drums are awkwardly dancing out of rhythm with your melodies in this track. Having some level of swing or a tasteful level of off beat rhythm is acceptable (alla Flume/Flylo/Shlohmo...) but this song isn't in that style and I'm not sure if thats really what you were going for here. Make your drums lock onto the meter a little more so you can dance to them, and fix your hi hat/shaker to hit a bit later than they are because that is throwing your rhythm off the most IMO. I would work more on the melodic end too. Work on adding a different section to your song that contrasts well with the one you have. Think of what makes a complete song, instead of using the same minor chord progression for 3 and a half minutes, try switching over to a major key. There doesn't seem to be a Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus/Coda, it all sounds like one long verse. If you're having trouble with that, imagine what the song would sound like with no drums and no production trickery, all your melody played solely on piano. You would get very bored after three minutes. Some producers can get away with this because their interesting production makes up for the lack of actual music, but at the end of the day you need to evaluate your song from every angle - As a production and as a musical composition. Hope this helped... inb4   tl;dr
good luck with your music

I like the idea, I know you said you want more insight on the mix and in general the mix is nice, however I think you could pick better sounds for some of your drums. Im not a huge fan of the kick you chose for this, and outside of the mix I think you may want to fix up the chords you chose. I think your biggest drawback in the song is less on the mix and more on the music encompassing it, not to sound discouraging

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Exercises?
« on: March 11, 2016, 10:05:48 pm »
I'll take a bassline and gradually ascend upscale at whatever tempo/key/scale fits the idea, then I'll build a basic chord progression around it with a basic saw wave pad or piano to keep things simple.

After that I'll repeat the bass line (or modify slightly) invert the chords/add sevenths/suspensions or other embellishments as the melody moves along trying to create tension

Once I'm satisfied with my melody I may add rhythmic elements (synths or drums... Or both) to compliment and add some cool rising or sweeping FX.

Finished Tracks / Re: Ambient Piano Composition
« on: March 08, 2016, 04:44:03 am »
This sounds like it could a part of an OST to an anime. I think your choice of notes is really beautiful. Definitely some interesting harmonies in there with an enjoyable taste in melody.

I'm not really digging the ambience to be quite honest. I enjoyed the piano more than anything.

I can live with that, haha. What in particular turns you off about the ambience?

All...The...Time...

Ive found ways to get around it though, I can share with you a sequences I use to basically keep me from hating music...

Step one - Take a walk in the neighborhood. Get some quiet, enjoy nature, even if its late at night - the world is your oyster.

Step two - After you take said walk, cook up some food - not sure about you but I find standing over a hot stove and enjoying a good meal is as calming as meditation (maybe I'm just weird)

Step three - Make some coffee/espresso (drink that strong stuff) and actively search for the shittiest, poorly written and produced music you can find... think about why you hate it. This should both help your diminishing ego, and teach you a lesson on what not to do with your music

Step four - after you've analyzed some pretty bad music, listen to a few songs that really inspire you, and focus on what makes those songs appeal to you, along with their subtleties.

Step Deadmau5 - hopefully you will feel some level of inspiration now and can work on your song without being too bored. If not, at the very least you got some exercise and a good meal lol.

I would love to know.... Which music do you analyze under the 'shitty' category?

I would love to answer.... I would categorize it as 'shitty' if a song has so many problems with its production and composition that it becomes almost unlistenable. Music is so easily accessible now, its not difficult find really bad songs out there

Sound Design / Re: presets vs sound design
« on: March 06, 2016, 07:41:56 pm »
I ask myself this question whenever I get caught up in the idea of using presets over my own sounds... Will the average listener F****** care? Chances are, no lol. If the music is good and the sounds are fitting then thats all that really should matter imo.. I feel like people are always caught up in this twisted mentality that in order to produce a good track, your sounds have to be totally original... Most sound isn't original, even if you think yours are, and imo it isn't worth getting caught up in this trend of sonic pornography when what really matters at the end of the day is the balance between a well written song and tasteful choice in sound. The only people who really REALLY care about this debate anymore are producers with their own pseudo-integrity that enjoy jerking themselves off to their own growl bass or laser sounds on their own shit tracks. But sound design is a whole lot of fun so more power to you if its something you want to do because you enjoy it, and if your wonky bass or ethereal pad truly adds something special to your track then use it.

Finished Tracks / Re: Sound of Home (katzamazing remix) - tech house
« on: March 06, 2016, 07:16:07 pm »
If you had a bandpass filter sweep out and introduce the piano in the beginning and messed a little more with dynamics/ texture your track would sound much better. I don't think its bad but it can definitely be done better (not to sound discouraging!) playing with groove/swing and velocity a little more on your drums will also make a much much bigger difference than you think to the feeling of your song. Right now it sounds a bit robotic. Try a bit harder on finding transitions that will help guide your ears on a bit more smoothly. I think of house music as a sonic journey that should gently take you from one place to another without making as many drastic changes to the music itself, keeping you hyped and remaining organic with a sexy rhythm.
