The bang in the intro immediately drew my attention which is good, also the tension brought about by the dissonance in the filtered chord is a nice touch. Some fizzy saw is playing around 40 seconds and I think that part can be mixed better, I feel like you wanted some type of tightness out of it (just an assumption) and I didn't feel that when I heard it, the sound felt a bit stripped down and didn't have the body that I was anticipating, plus it was competing a bit with that intense pluck you have. A little filling in some mid range frequencies with your bass sounds and cutting of those fuzzy highs (maybe by reducing noise) can help. Soundcloud's dithering tendencies may also be mucking up your track a tiny bit, but if the mix and instruments were tweaked just right this song would be killer! also just a few more transitions would sound stellar

I don't know the original song but I dig what you did with this. I think the little break down you have at 1:00 could be done a little better, maybe by playing a bit more with the listener's anticipation the section before and having the two parts have a more distinctive contrast. The section you have after the drop could also be better by developing better contrast ( Think yin yang ) by playing a bit more with dynamics/filters and anything else that you can introduce/draw back for added effect.

All...The...Time...

Ive found ways to get around it though, I can share with you a sequences I use to basically keep me from hating music...

Step one - Take a walk in the neighborhood. Get some quiet, enjoy nature, even if its late at night - the world is your oyster.

Step two - After you take said walk, cook up some food - not sure about you but I find standing over a hot stove and enjoying a good meal is as calming as meditation (maybe I'm just weird)

Step three - Make some coffee/espresso (drink that strong stuff) and actively search for the shittiest, poorly written and produced music you can find... think about why you hate it. This should both help your diminishing ego, and teach you a lesson on what not to do with your music

Step four - after you've analyzed some pretty bad music, listen to a few songs that really inspire you, and focus on what makes those songs appeal to you, along with their subtleties.

Step Deadmau5 - hopefully you will feel some level of inspiration now and can work on your song without being too bored. If not, at the very least you got some exercise and a good meal lol.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Creating Ambient Elements
« on: March 06, 2016, 04:54:40 am »
I like to do weird lfo patterns and routing in synth, and not over using the same sounds helps otherwise you lose interest. Some strange things I've done.... Take a saw wave and use a reaaaalllly wonky lfo shape, throw it on the pitch of your sound, drench it (or not) in some reverb and if you can, automate your panning filtering and volume to make the sound more "animated". Ive done similar things with bass tones too. how about some beeps and blips with delay that move up and down the whole tone scale (very future aesthetic...)  Chop a vocal sample, pitch it many octaves lower than it originally was in your sampler and play around with different pitches in that register, it'll sound long and drawn out, use a reasonable amount of reverb and have these different vocal drones sit at the bottom end (200 - 300 hz region) of your ambient mix. Literally just experiment, its crazy what cool and original things you can make if you think intuitively and creatively without any inhibitions.

I wrote a melody out the other day and did a little bit of fun ambient stuff in the background! Comments/criticism or whatever else you want to say is always appreciated  :)

Cool Song, I dig the chord progression and arrangement of sounds. Definitely hearing the Anjuna influence here too. I might work on the drums a little bit more, for example the snare could be processed a little bit better at around 1:25, it sounds like you played with the haas effect to widen the snare which is cool but maybe work on ways to make it sound like it has more body by using the same snare sample but emphasizing different frequency bands along the stereo field (like low passing or shelving an additional snare and putting it in the center while working to avoid phase issues) - just a suggestion, it may not even work that well for this but its a start.

Finished Tracks / Re: Heavy | "Chill" downtempo song
« on: March 06, 2016, 03:59:52 am »
Hey, nice song! Very long track so its a bit of a slow burner (which I don't necessarily dislike, but are sometimes hard to pull off). You introduce some different instruments throughout to keep things fresh and I like your choice in melody/harmony when the stringy synth comes in, but I feel like the instruments could be better produced. A lot of the textures you have in here don't seem to change enough for how long the song is. Listen to Strobe by deadmau5 as a decent example of a song that slowly progresses while remaining interesting- this song has potential, but should vary a bit more. Along the lines of mixing, the track seems very spatially narrow, frequencies sound like they were cut out of instruments to make things blend better, but it seemed a little excessive Especially for how low the sub is thats playing under the kick (consider exciting your bass sounds with different types of distortions that way upper harmonics translate better to different sound systems). Try adding different sounds or play a lot more with filter modulations to keep the sonics from becoming too overbearing, its a bit too stationary for how long the song is. Hope this made sense lol, enjoyed your song but thats just my two cents - happy producing!

Finished Tracks / Re: Love You, Fuck Us. | Brand new joint album!

I dig these tracks - I think the ideas are there (it kind of has a cashmere cat/ mura masa vibe) and as far as the tracks go sonically they're pretty okay. It seems like you and your friends know how to produce a track, but I feel like what sticks out the most to me (in a less favorable way) isn't in the production as much as it is in the musicality of your songs. The melodic progressions are a bit deceptive in your first track, and throughout a few others the music was tolerable, but could be done better. Focus a bit more on developing your ideas better melodically (I didn't hear as many problems in regards to rhythm, which is good) and always remember that making nice sound is only half the battle in producing quality music. Hope this helped - keep making music!

Sincerely,

Your friendly neighborhood Darude - Sandstorm  :D

Hey! Great track, nice mixing and cool composition. I think the various textures you introduce throughout the song fit very smoothly in the arrangement and the melody is fresh and prevents the music from becoming boring. One thing I would consider changing is the snare buildup into the first breakdown, maybe by adding another roll underneath but at a faster speed (Possibly in triplets) lowered and filtered a little to draw out more intensity. I feel like there is enough room in the track to just add a little extra (Like drums or maybe just a few more melodic layers) in some parts as well

This is cool! The mix sounds decent to me btw, but I'll try to focus more on the composition.

I overall like the composition, but I'll be nitpicky for you. There are lots of cool elements, and for the most part there are pieces that glue the sections together. One thing I think it would benefit from is a melody. You've got the high lead line that's very "note-y" -- and it's cool and it gives it that jazz feel you're talking about -- but it's maybe too note-y to be the main melody. Y'know, it doesn't hook me or stick in my head once the song is over. You could maybe take one of the sections, remove some of the notes from that line until it sounds melodic..? It depends what you're going for, but I'd personally try something like that.

I really like the buildup to 2:35, but it'd be great if the drop were more intense! Maybe some of those loud saw pads layered in, to make that part stand out from previous sections? Something to try.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to get back to you. Nice work, I really like the sound of it!

Thank you for the feedback! Yeah, I'm on board with you on the melody part. I have something in mind to "hook" the song and I'm actually talking to a friend to sing on this track so we will see how that goes! What did you have in mind for a more intense drop, Im looking to do something unique while sticking to genre without being too cliche so if you have any ideas please throw them at me!

I'll give you some real genuine and good feedback.

Great composition. It definitely does stick in your head (idk what that other guy is talking about.)

I'm assuming based on this that you haven't had much experience mastering. You DEFINITELY need to do some hard work and learn how to master well. It's so crucial. I can help you along if you want just message me and I'll help you with what I can. Song is catchy, positive, with a little bit of funk in it. I like it.

Mastering is a huge thing to learn right off the bat. I can't stress enough how important learning to master is!

Sounds design is good as well. (Idk if you did it yourself or presets, but the sounds all fit eachother so well done on that.)

Sorry that guy above me was such a downer. Let me know if you want/need help with anything! I'm willing to do what I can.

Thank you! I like creating 95% of my sounds from scratch, so no presets in this one. I think the only sounds I didn't design myself were the kick and snare, which were from a random sample pack I used. Sound design to me is one of the most fun parts about making music :)

Hey everyone! I appreciate all the advice - good and bad so criticize my song at your will. Marrow Machines, I get where you are coming from and I appreciate the (albeit seemingly brutal) honesty in your reply. I haven't really gotten to that stage in this song yet, I started it about a week and a half or so back and have collectively spent no more than 12-15 hours on it. My main focus has been on working with arrangement and harmony. Ive only been producing for about a year now so with that in mind I don't really expect the mix to sound astounding from the get go. As far as mastering goes, the most I would personally do is make sure the final mix is satisfying enough to my standards and then compress the song to a reasonable level without it creating too many artifacts. If anything I would get it professionally mastered because honestly at that point my perception would be somewhat unreliable after working on it for a long time. No hard feelings buddy

WIPs / Progressive house/ Jazz Composition (Looking for Ideas/ Suggestions)
« on: February 24, 2016, 07:28:34 pm »
Hey everyone! I'm a new member to this forum and thrilled to be a part of this awesome and talented community of producers!    :D Anyways, I'm working on a new track, not sure what to label the genre but I would really appreciate any kind of input on the composition so far ( How it is, where it can go, what I can do better etc...) I would rather not discuss the mix because I'm really not at that stage in the song yet, but any helpful advice on the music itself will be greatly appreciated
