Exploration

There's no output without input. You can work all you want but if you're not actively searching for as much external stimuli as possible, your musical range will be limited. This stimuli can be in the form of other music, or even completely unrelated things like going into nature, reading a book, or watching movies. Anything can contribute to your musicality, and enriching your life will tend to enrich your music.

Great word choice! Exploration births creativity, inspiration, and motivation to succeed and I think it's important to find the balance between experience and the analyzation of your surroundings. That said, how do you draw the line from what is authentic creativity versus mimicry? I think many producers, including myself, second guess our creativity because we are so inspired by our surroundings that we lose the sense of "self" in our creation. If our surroundings greatly influence our creation, at what point is it okay to say, "Yes, that's my work of art"?

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Bass Sub vs. Bass Synth
« on: January 27, 2016, 09:57:01 pm »
Very insightful feedback! Thank you guys. A few more questions came up to mind when reading through your replies.

1) When cutting out the appropriate frequencies, is it better to use Low cuts/High cuts or Low shelfs/high shelfs? Part of me thinks that using cuts would get me a more clear sound because none of the frequencies would "spill" out. The other half of me thinks it's better to shelf the frequencies and allow it to "spill" out a little more gently so the overall song could be more full.

(This is confusing to me because I don't want my bass synth sub frequency to collide with my sub frequency, so using a low cut seems more appropriate)

2) Do you also cut out the frequencies of the kick within the sub and bass, or is sidechaining it good enough?

Mixing/Mastering / Bass Sub vs. Bass Synth

Hey guys, so I'm a bit confused on how to properly include a Sub and a Bass Synth in the same track at the same time. Also, in regards to Bass Synths, what are your thoughts on it being wider than it should be? (aka, you hear it as it it's out on the sides of the song, rather than in the dead center)

Like most others, I'll listen to my track and see how it makes me feel, what it makes me think about and the emotion that rides along with the song. I also keep a notebook of terminology that I find interesting that I want to save for later, when the song matches something in the list I've made. I don't think there's a right way to come up with a title, but the title can/should be used as a mental guidance through the thoughts of the artist and what they intend to portray in their music.

I love how the majority of these words can be used on things greater than just music. With any journey that you choose to take- passion, determination, patience, endurance, and all the rest are great details that will bring success and happiness in life.

Keep them coming! I hope to make a list of all the words so we have a sense of what is important in music and the journey of success.

Yea I think that's it. It feels a little cluttered in the percussion side. And I think you should make them into two separate songs for sure! I like the blend its cool. But I really like the first part of the song. It had my head bobbing the whole time.   :D :D

Okay good to know! I think I'll try to create it as one song because that has been the goal from the beginning. But if there is really no progress there, I'll do two separate ones.

Persistance.

I know that we have all had our ups and downs while producing new music. The most important thing above all else is to be persistent in your creative endeavors. If you constantly strive to create new and better things, you will. The moment you tell yourself "I can't do any better than this" is the moment you've lost. As long as we persist, the ideas will keep flowing.

I love that! It kind of goes along with my word, Quantity. As long as you keep pushing forward, tackling each obstacle one by one, you'll eventually grow and allow your creativity to bloom further than it ever has before.

Dude! Really digging this track, I love trance. For some reason at 1:45 it sounds like there too much going on.

Thanks for the reply! Hmm maybe I put too much high hats? I'll take a look at the mix. What do you think about the blend between psy and progressive trance? I don't know if I should trash it and focus the song entirely to one type of trance genre.

Syllabus.

Mainly because "Game Plan" is two words. To kinda expand on what Wontalla said, it's helpful to have a written plan of your goals and what you want to accomplish - you aren't stuck wondering what to learn or what to do, it's all set out for you. Try and think about what the best order would be to learn the things you want to learn and write it out somewhere you can visually reference. Apply that to your projects, too: write out various song ideas before you open your DAW to produce, so you can reference the idea whenever you get stuck.

I like how yours and Wontalla are similar. I definitely agree that organization and planning go a long way in music progression! It really allows you to move forward and actively apply what you learn into something new. Awesome choice!

Hey guys just want to get a thread going to condense motivational aspects of music into one word. I think this would help a lot of other producers understand different production perspectives and to mentally point out "key terminology" as we go along the musical process.

So without further todo, here are the rules:
1. If you had to describe music production (and all it consists of) with one word, what would it be?
2. Please elaborate on why you chose that word.

I'll go first!

Quantity
If I had to give one word that I believe is the best advice for music production it would have to be Quantity. Every day I hit obstacles that limit my production and creative process and every day I tell myself I don't know how to make it any better... yet. Understanding that even though I can't produce the sound and quality I imagine in my head right now, time and work will eventually pave the way. As long as I don't quit and continue to create more and more, my quality will increase, as well as my creative flow. Although quality is possibly the most important part of any song, you can't achieve quality unless you do the work to get there. "Find quality through quantity".

Hey guys, so this past week I attended Dreamstate SF and was completely blown away. So I decided to try my hand to included some psytrance elements in my production. Please let me know what you think! The first part is heavily psy while the breakdown is more progressive trance.

Sound Design / SUB BASS HELP! (C0-C1) OR (C1-C2)??
« on: January 20, 2016, 04:30:58 am »
Hey guys, I have a bit of a noobish question. Does your typical basic sin sub bass work better in the C0-C1 region or the higher octave of C1-C2?

I always find it frustrating when have of my sub notes are perfect/full, and the others are either too low (less than G0) or too high (greater than A1) to give you the 'sub' thickness.

Any advice on how to get a consistent sounding sub through different notes?

Question: what feeling were you trying to give with a reverbed kick?

well when I didn't have the reverb kick, it sounded too flat and abrupt when the kick hit. So adding in the reverb kick allowed me to fill that space

I don't think there's any harm in it. I used to think that every part of my tracks had to be somehow 'original', but I don't think that has to be true with chord progressions. In the end it's up to you though, you could make a good track with the same chords or different ones.

That's very true. I should focus on getting the production quality right, rather than figuring out how to sound different. I can worry about that later. Trusting my own ears though can be difficult so I appreciate your help!
