Finished Tracks / Re: New track I made I would love some feedback! :)
« on: January 20, 2016, 11:19:47 pm »
What I like about the track:

- The melody is nice!
- The synth stabs (which come in @ 0:45) work nice together with the synth from the start.
- The arrangement is simple but effective.
- The hihg pitched synth (angelic voices) adds a special beautiful mood to the song.

What I would change about the song

- I don't like th sound of the drums, the kick lacks power.
- The drum programming needs more variation, add drumfills or something.
- There's a lead starting @ 2:15 and it stops @ 2:46. and it never comes back. How about changing the rhythm of that lead and let it grow in the break after 3 minutes. The part after 3 minutes need some more excitement.

This already sounds great!!

The mix is as good a it is. I hear some choir like vocals and some vocal snippets, I hope they won't get in the way with the vocals you gonna record.

I like the piano chords but here's maybe an idea to bring more variation to them; you can make them really short, almost stabby in the breakdown and then add a small dub delay. But watch out to not make it a sonic mess. Just a little idea.

Schematic has done a wonderful job to answer your questions, I can't add much to that.

Just a little example on how you can use a multiband compressor (although Schematic already answered this with his example of the bassline); on kickdrums.

Kicks can be divided into the tud, main body and low end (sub). The tud (or attack or whatever you want to call the clicky sound most kicks start with) is in lots of cases around 1 kHz, the body is around 60-400 Hz and the sub is below 60 Hz. Don't nail me on these numbers, every kick has its own sound.

With multiband compression you can change the dynamics of each component of the kick. Do some compression or volume changes on the high frequencies to change the clickiness of the kick and if a kick is too boomy, you can lower the volume of the band that spans everything below 60 Hz, and it doesn't affect the body of the kick.

With a regular compressor you can only change the dynamics of the kick as a whole.

Sound Design / Re: Toms processing
« on: January 20, 2016, 06:36:23 pm »
Isn't that process just called 'eq'ing' and 'stereowidth manipulation'? What IO'm trying to say is that the description of the problem is half of the solution.

I don't know which samples you are talking about, there's no audio file but you can describe what's the problem, so use some tools to get rid of that problem; cut the lows with an eq and make it less wide with M/S processing.

Toms are bassy indeed and will always fight with the bassline. But it's better to deal with it in the mix than starting with thin samples.

If eq doesn't work to get rid of too much bass on the toms, try a multiband compressor; bracket the bassy sound in one band and lower it, like a volume slider.

I shall bow for You, Lord Of Music.

Browsing through the songs and it sounds very interesting, lots of detail, lots of variety. Congratulations on you first release!

Amen.

What a great idea, why didn't I think of this myself? Thanks!

Nice start/ build up of the song.

The drums are a bit 'generic', I would try different samples. There's not much energy going on below 150 Hz. Th kick has to be more power.

The synths are mixed way too loud, pushing the drum sounds awzy, especially after 1:10.

The synths coming in @ 2:42 are way too loud again.

Here's my try on chill out. I put some glitchy drums in it.
Don't hold back on your comments.

Thanks!!

Thanks! You mean like a build up using white noise?

Yeah, the build up could use something extra. White noise was just my proposal but maybe you know something better (risers, downlifters,...)

I have written a txt about how I mix and master, maybe it can be helpful to you.

But remember to check out what works for you. Not everything what I or anybody else says is useful for you. ;)

This isn't that bad!!

Yes, there's missing some bottom end. The bassline needs to be fattened.

I like the minimal approach although the arrangement needs something extra before the voices come in, maybe something like filter-automated white noise.

I get the vibe of this song. Nice relaxed afterparty music.

About the kick, I like it, it's not really a kick but an enhancement of the bassline and the bass isn't getting lost in this mix. Like an 808 kick can changed into a bassline.

I like the feel of the song and the hihats or high end sounds fine on my headphones.

I her a snare that layered with a clap, or something but the clap is a bit shifted. That' sounds neat! Decent track!!
