Sound Design / Re: [Q] How to make this sound
« on: February 21, 2016, 12:15:42 am »
I can't hear any 8-bar long sounds starting at 0:30.. or any sound that's there both at 0:30 and 1:15

I'm not convinced such a thing exists. I don't mean to say I'm convinced it doesn't exist, just that.. how the hell could you be sure? What form would genetic traits for particular strengths take? I assume there's a not a guitar-playing gene, so.. what? A musical ability gene? A gene for particularly acute perception of sound?

When I was discussing that Flow book with a friend he mentioned this story. This inclines me against the notion of talent as a genetic trait. I also remember there being an anecdote in the book about a guy who, after 3-4 years of attending classical performances as a child, suddenly had an epiphany one day and went from loathing them to loving them. How does that happen? How would we have any way of knowing what was going on below the surface for the several years prior to that day?

My hunch - and it is purely a hunch - is that you can't be born with, say, a gift for music, but that a child could easily, without deliberate intention or awareness, develop one or more of the abilities (even in a completely different context) that also happen to contribute to musical proficiency.

It was the least stupid of the many, many stupid names I have come up with over time.

I remember reading on here that you shouldn't use linear phase EQ for low-passing (or was it high-passing?). If it's also bad for transients, what things is it good for?

Lots of cool stuff going on in this track, I like it. Those stabs at 1:45 onward are sick. There's only a couple of things I'd highlight, which is that filter LFO on that synth that starts at 2:01 sounds out of time with the track. There's something similar going on with that snare at 3:14 just before the drop. I think the snare is probably in time, but the way that synth before it is pulsing back and forth makes it sound like it isn't.

Damn, this is nice. The thing I'd be most tempted to change is, that lead synth that starts at 1:08 which cuts out at the cowbell (?) hit on the first couple of go-rounds. The variation of this where it's sustained through that hit doesn't really work for me, it starts to sound a bit whiny.

Levels are fine though, drop doesn't sound at all cluttered to me. Good track!

Hitting the limits of my production knowledge then just fiddling instead of going away to learn shit

I don't know... I have on-and-off issues with depression and when I make music while depressed, it inevitably ends up being a happy bouncy cross between progressive house and circus music. The two or three "Sad" WIPs I have were made while I was in a really good mood.

This is intriguing. My experience is the same, the last year or so of my life has been a shocker but the couple of tracks I've been working on in that time are really quite upbeat. I can't imagine wanting to make sad music when I feel better though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sound Design / Re: Help with "smoothing" out my white noise/tonal risers
« on: February 17, 2016, 08:28:38 pm »
Just check the channel meter on whatever your DAW is. Sylenth has its own internal meters too, but I don't know if there's any clipping risk from hitting the red on those. The answer seems to be no from my experience, but probably best to get someone more knowledgeable to verify that.

Just had a look at the settings I used the last time I wanted smooth white noise.. turns out I actually used brown noise, then high-passed it around 1.3k with strong-ish resonance. I didn't actually take any of the high frequencies out - it was the high-passing that seemed to do the most to make it sound smooth.

I made the patch in Alchemy and just used 1 instance of brown noise as the signal source.

I take it the problem is nothing to do with clipping or with resonance being cranked all the way up or something like that?

Nadav, what do you consider talent to be? Is talent being good at something, or the potential to be good at something?

What is it you're trying to recreate, the way the tone alternates every half beat so that it sounds more open/higher on the off-beat?
