Hey guys so I'm not very used to mixing on monitors but I've been making more of an effort recently to use them instead of my headphones.

I have the monitors in the triangle position so that they're at a little bit of an angle.  One thing that I just recently noticed is that when I bring my ears closer to the computer screen the bass gets louder. With that being said... when I'm sitting down normally on my chair with a tiny bit of distance between myself and the monitors the bass gets softer.

Which one do I base my mixing decisions off of? Is this what people mean when they say that you need to "learn your monitors" or "learn your room"?

Most likely you are facing a wall and your speakers back too. What you hear are the reflections coming back at you.

The only way to solve this problem is treating your room, if you don't have this option then, if you have, face a big window, so that the back of your speakers aim at it. Another option would be to listen on a quiet level and change the listening position.

Mixing/Mastering / How do you use pre & post fader settings?
« on: March 03, 2016, 08:41:30 pm »
I'm kinda curious how you guys deal with the post & pre fader options.

I've been playing around them recently and there's some nice stuff I came across.

For example when you send your reverbs to certain instruments suchs as vocals or pads, do you use post or pre?

Also, what else do you add after the reverb send, besides EQ to cut out the lows?

...aaand that's why I love Wave Alchemy. :)

Yep, or black octopus sound, pakotec to name a few. :-)

OK.. so I just got the Audient ID22 by post.

I first listened a the bryan kearney remix of U by Gareth Emery by the motu card and then switched to the Audient.

and...

Holy *$&$ what a ... WHAT A difference! Seriously.. two different worlds! I'm in shock.

It feels like my dynaudio BM5A MKII really and I mean REALLY came alive with the Audient ID22. It's like the motu plays inside a box and the Audient is not. The Audient is so clear & transparant.

I remember there was a topic on here if one should by an audio interface or not.. Definitely yes! Get the Audient ID14 or ID22!!!

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I'm looking to upgrade soon from my Fast Track Pro and will consider these interfaces.

You won't regret the choice with the ID22. Everytime I turn on my dynaudio's I'm surpised how good they really sound now.

Audient said they only use the best quality components that are also in +1500 euro audio interfaces. They can easy price this interface at 800 euro minimum as it beats all others around that price. :-)

It's the best buy I did in a long time.

So essentially that's a Vengeance story all over again...
I get the importance, but it's getting kind of tiresome.

Haha, yep they just take a lot of samples from tracks too.

Anyway, there are much more big sampling companies out there who if you listen carefully have taken the samples from existing tracks.

There are just a few who really do their own and the quality is much better.

Ask Will on facebook :-)

But if there's one thing that I noticed is that it's just practise and practise. I'm not surprised if Will said he just played around with sounds.

And yes, that DeVas bassline is really good!  I think they have a pitched-down sub bass note in there which gives it that wobble effect.  Really nice work on the sub overall.  Also check out some recent Fatum tracks (Tryst, Take Me Back, Hold On remix), they all have immense basslines!

Tritonal is one of my favorites with such type bassline.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Studio monitor issue/ best cables?

Hi Gearfiend, I have the exact same setup (JBLs w/ Scarlett interface).  I don't think that the quality of XLR cables will make a huge difference and I'm not sure that will fix your problem. I think most quality cables are just that...quality.  (It's like HDMI cables, ya know? Any expert will tell you to buy the cheapest ones - no need for the MONSTER cables - because they all do the same thing.)

Which cables are you currently using?  When does it make the static sound?  Is your DAW open?

I really disagree with your statement. Quality cables really does wonders. You cannot compare it to HDMI cable at all. If you go to a pro audio shop they will tell you that.

Heatcliff is right. You shouldn't hold back on quality cables!

In any case if u get new speakers - also get decoupling devices such as isoacoustics or speaker stands with decoupling features! It improves playback quality immensily compared to when you put your speakers on a desk for example..

Isoacoustics with Hemisphere sorbothane.. super good combination! ;-)

Seems nice. I like big volume buttons. :D

Should get the interface today after a few days of delay by the post.. /sigh

Anyway, there's so many good reviews about this interface that I really cannot go wrong with them. ;)

Dynaudio BM5A MKII or Focals CMS65

Both used ofcourse, but still for that money it blows all the new speakers around $300 out of the water.

That might be jumping the gun in this instance.

Definitely worth it though.

Seen pairs of MKII for about 600 dollars. Should fit within the budget of KAB.

CMS65 I rarely see, but I think they will go for more than the MKII, but MKII to me sounds pretty much the same as the CMS. CMS I think has a bit better mid.
