Sound Design / Re: The "How do I make this sound?" thread
« on: February 12, 2016, 04:19:07 am »
Anyone know how to make a Porter Robinson-esque Arp?

Ex:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4BP_CQ2Azs

Drop is at the very beginning of the video, the shiny keys in the background that really add a lot, anyone know?

Sounds a lot like a pretty basic deep house pluck. Shouldn't take much. If you have serum use the FMFM wavetable with a saw, grab a lowpass filter and add some very sharp cutoff. Also another that gives it a little bit of a shine is a small amount of downsample distortion. After that add on your choice of after effects to tweak it however you wish! Hopefully that's helpful.

Sound Design / Re: Serum Modulating Pitch Like Massive

What DAW are you using? You could always create an automation clip for the root and then create a seperate automation while bent to the note you want to bent to, copy the percentage of the pitch bend, and insert it in the original automation clip.

But as for specifically in Serum? I'm not sure what you mean. The pitch bend in the bottom right corner goes to exact semitones, or are you saying for a specific way to bend that to semitones linearly?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / White Noise/Risers
« on: February 12, 2016, 04:12:50 am »
Anyone have any vsts or effects tips for a good white noise? Looking for white noise for drums, risers, and with synths. Any white noise I make I think sounds like shit.

Tips and help will always be appreciated! :)

Thank you!

Just watched a video that exclusively talked about compressing kicks. I understand it almost completely now, but of course it'll take a lot of experimentation and practice to get it down. I've done a lot to clean up and master the song better now, as well as adding a few more things rhythmically and melodically. I'll post an updated audio sometime in the coming week.

Thanks for you help and feedback. As someone who's been learning everything himself this forum could not have come at a better time.

Props to Mat Zo for bringing classic forums back!

Sound Design / Re: Best Reverb Plugin?
« on: January 15, 2016, 08:09:21 pm »
Depends. My machine can handle it fine, but if I slap it on a pad or a pluck, and then bounce it to audio, its fine.

Just a warning, though, I woudln't use it for anything else other than ambient places in the mix. Thats just my opinion. Use some of the other Valhalla products if you want that kind of thing.

Why? Can't you adjust the delay, etc if you want a short one?

My God the ambience in that reverb is incredible, but I understand why would only use it for that.

Personally I'm looking for something that would widen up and extend the mix if you understand what I mean.

That reverb is monstrously beautiful though.

Cheers

Sound Design / Best Reverb Plugin?

Hey all! Any pointers towards what's the best/what are the best reverb plug-ins? Wondering why you like it and what sort of a timbre and space it can give.

Cheers

I get it now. I've never had compression explained to me so simply. Everywhere else I've looked they way over complicate it. Grew up as a sound kid so I grasp a lot of the techy production stuff quickly and understand what it all does. Good to know though! Ill definitely look up some videos and experiment with it more now.

^ Went and double checked. My lead saw was the ONLY thing that wasn't eq'd for my kick. Went a little too low and muddied up the kick end. Fixed it. Thank you for noticing! Still semi-new to getting a good master. Any tips would be appreciated. I still don't understand the benefits of compressing a kick. Care to explain?

Thank you! Yes I was just inspired so I jotted it down as quickly as I could. Added in some reverb. I need to work on spacing out the sounds during the chorus though.

Chords are as follows.
Verse: E -> G#m -> F# -> F#4
Chorus: A#m 1st inversion -> E only using the Major 3rd and an octave of the root above that (i.e E,G#,E.) -> B 2nd inversion -> A#2

Definitely going to be finishing this shortly by adding in little things I hear along the way as well as widening and perfecting the mix. Most likely making a new intro as well. I'm surprised how quickly it all came together. I just want it sounding pristine before I completely finish it.

Thank you for the kind words and tips! Always appreciated. :)

Hi all! Even though James Egbert isn't SUPER small, I do believe he's one of the most underrated artist alive right meow.
He recently started a new alias so he can separate his Electro and Bass sides into 2 separate artists.

Here are some examples and I pope you enjoy them. Dude is a fucking monster!

James Egbert Electro: https://soundcloud.com/jamesegberthttps://soundcloud.com/jamesegbert/sets/james-egbert-taylr-renee-cant ,

James Egbert Electrohouse: https://soundcloud.com/leagueoflegends/the-glory-james-egbert-remix , https://soundcloud.com/jamesegbert/porter-robinson-flicker-james-egbert-remix-1 , https://soundcloud.com/fuzionmuzik/06-the-climb?in=fuzionmuzik/sets/james-egbert-the-void

James Egbert/SVYR Bass/Dub: https://soundcloud.com/svyrmusic/svyr-war-never-changes-original-mix , https://soundcloud.com/jamesegbert/jettison

This song specifically is about/to his wife and it's so melodically beautiful and yet still bringing in some complextro vibes: https://soundcloud.com/fuzionmuzik/11-you-and-me?in=fuzionmuzik/sets/james-egbert-the-void

Dude really deserves some recognition. As of right now he only has 28k followers.

Hope you all enjoy his amazing music!

Chill yet not boring and still melodic? YAY :D Love it. I wouldn't consider this melodic dubstep though. Nothing really dubby about it. It's more of a melodic future especially with the cutoff on the lead synth. I like it though. Don't know if you were looking for any feedback, but if you are I'd suggest taking a oneshot of some sort (maybe piano or some kind of oneshot pluck) and reversing it then playing it forward on certain parts of the "drop" just to add some extra rhythm and dynamic to the song.

Just a personal taste/suggestion.

I dig it though.

Like the vibe but the vocal cuts seem too loud from the rest of the mix (maybe its just my personal taste?) That's the only thing I really hear off with it. It also somewhat sounds like the bass is muddying it by being too loud/overlimited. Maybe I'm just crazy

But it definitely does have a good vibe and a clean feel to it. Finish it! Why not?

Hey all. I did this in like 5 hours today with all original melodic sounds. Fuck sample packs and presets.

Let me know what y'all think. I'd love to get some honest feedback both positive and negative!

So if you can do it in the form of a critique sandwhich: One thing you liked, One thing you disliked/thought needed work, and another thing you liked.

Thank you and I love you all. :)

Finished Tracks / Decypher - Elucidation
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:05:37 am »
Throwback to half a year ago when I wrote this song while going through the hardest time of my life. Every time I listen to it its just a flood of emotions for myself. I hope it somewhat translated when you hear it.

Backstory: This girl who I knew's older brother committed suicide and It was just as I was beginning to get closer to her so I felt that it happened for a reason. So of course when it happened I was there for her just being a good friend, listening, talking, getting her mind off it when it needed to be, and talking to her through it when she needed someone to help her process what happened and why. Her parents personally thanked me for being there for her. There was absolutely NOTHING between us besides 2 close friends. Then 3 weeks later her parents told me to stop talking to her (I just became a legal adult at the time and our parents went to church together, so I didn't think it was THAT big of a deal), so I kept on talking to her, helping her, etc. Then out of nowhere I get home from a long day at work and theres a sheriff at my door handing me a restraining order. My cousin still talks to her daily and he's told me that it wasn't from her at all it was simply her parents. But at the time I also couldn't tell anyone about it as it might be considered witness tampering if I was going to take it to court. So me, as a brand new 18 year old couldn't tell ANYONE about the hardest thing id ever gone through for 4 months. It looked like on of my closest friends slapped me with a restraining order with no explanation at all. That's not something that's easy to process. So I turned to music to vent it all out and this is the product of that.

Holy shit that's long. But yeah, enjoy the song.

Also, what would you genre this as? Just curious because I honestly couldn't genre it.

Peace, Brandon
