I never really understood the hype about fabfilter pro-q. It's nice and all but I dislike the workflow of it.

Anyways...

Justin Bieber. I get so much hate for listening to Justin Bieber from friends or family. I've been called a faggot because of it lol. I just don't really understand. He's a good singer and plays a variety of instruments.

Mixing/Mastering / Dealing With Dynamics Between Song Sections
« on: March 06, 2016, 01:36:23 am »
Hey guys. Right now in the track I'm working on the verse is shamefully louder than the chorus. I want to lower the balance of the instruments in the verse so that they are balanced with the chorus but if I do that then I'm also going to be lowering the balance of some instruments in the intro, (Intro and verse share a few sounds) which will result in the balance of the intro being messed up.

How do I adjust the volume between the verse and chorus without completing screwing up the balance of my intro? If that was unclear then let me rephrase the question. How do I deal with unwanted dynamics between song sections? Better yet... how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

WIPs / Re: Progressive House Track - Looking For Feedback
« on: March 05, 2016, 11:59:27 pm »
Thanks for the feedback alan. I've worked on the mix quite a bit since I've first posted this WIP and I'm happy to say that there is some more low end in the newer version.

I hope to post it in the finished tracked section sometime next week. Pretty sick of listening to it at this point. (47 hours into it)

The mix is noticeably better but is still not perfect which I've come to accept. Working on this for so long is making me impatient. Ready to move onto the next track already! ^.^

Very interesting and you guys are correct. My speakers do have a wall behind them. There are also two pretty big windows behind them as well. (A little bit higher though)

I never actually realized the limitations of my listening environment until now. I'll study some room acoustics and see if there's anything I can do about this.

WIPs / Re: Absolutely Frustrated with this
« on: March 05, 2016, 01:58:58 am »
There's too much of a volume difference between the build and the drop. Just listen or look at the waveform and you can see the wide change in dynamics.

The plucked string sounds to dry. I can hear some subtle delay on it but maybe try adding some reverb on top of it to push it farther in the mix and let those chords come through. It feels like they're fighting for attention in the mix.

Mixing/Mastering / Wacky Monitors? Bass Gets Louder As I Get Closer
« on: March 05, 2016, 12:17:43 am »
Hey guys so I'm not very used to mixing on monitors but I've been making more of an effort recently to use them instead of my headphones.

I have the monitors in the triangle position so that they're at a little bit of an angle.  One thing that I just recently noticed is that when I bring my ears closer to the computer screen the bass gets louder. With that being said... when I'm sitting down normally on my chair with a tiny bit of distance between myself and the monitors the bass gets softer.

Which one do I base my mixing decisions off of? Is this what people mean when they say that you need to "learn your monitors" or "learn your room"?

I find it really hard to let people listen to my music. I put a lot of time, devotion and love into it. And to deal with comments on "my baby's" is difficult for me at times. Although I can separate personal opinions from proper feedback.
Of course I know I can still learn a lot. And I'm working on that every single day. But at some point you should let people hear what you make, right? I easily think my tracks are not finished yet, ending up not letting anybody hear them. Or when I finally do I get not so nice comments (or no comments at all) which makes me insecure again.

Any tips how to better deal with this?

I deal with same issue honestly except it has more to do with me being much to critical of my own work. If I feel something is bad then I automatically think everyone thinks the same which is a bad habit because it's not necessarily always true.

Honestly, I would REALLY like to hear your music. If you've made 90 tracks then I'm sure there has to be at least one of them that I like. I think most people are pretty nice when it comes to feedback. I haven't ever had anyone tell me "This song sounds like absolute garbage" aside from myself. Sometimes people are blatantly honest like Marrow when it comes to issues in your music but it's only for the sake of making it better. (Which he's definitely helping me out on)

Savant definitely works fast. I enjoy listening to Madeon more though. The adventure album revolved around more of a songwriting perspective rather than producer chops which is something that worked out really well for him.

Definitely puts me to shame. Makes me wish I had started producing at a younger age. I can only imagine the amount of effort he must have put into honing his craft having all that free time as a teenager not going to school. (I can't remember what age he dropped out.) Not to mention the serious balls and faith in himself he had to have had in order to do that in the first place.

I personally think lyrics should be (I guess with more art forms for that matter) open to your own interpretation. So hey fit whatever mood you are in. A little difficult to explain, but I hope you get what I mean.  8)

It's good that you mention this because this honestly brings a new topic to my mind.

Does being straightforward in your lyrics get in the way of the listeners own interpretation?

Some lyrics are obviously a love story or a party story. Other's are more on the verge of "Well what do these lyrics actually mean?". The latter are definitely the type that I feel are more out there for personal interpretation.

I never thought selling samples was such a shady business until I was on beatport and heard my cousins track being used as a preview for a sample pack that was being sold.

My cousin never consented to the use of his track in their advertising. The advertising was obviously false because none of the sounds from the sample pack they were selling were used in my cousins song because they ripped it off soundcloud.

I mean... eventually he filed a complaint and beatport took it off but whoever did it must have been a real scumbag.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Equalization Of Lead Layers
« on: March 02, 2016, 06:12:14 pm »
I get why stacking a supersaw after a supersaw wouldn't work as a layer. It's basically like taking a duplicate of a track and pasting it next to the original. You're just making the volume louder.

How about say strings over a saw playing the exact same notes with the strings in full stereo and the saw about halfway stereo?

I'm doing it right now and it sounds alright to my ears but I've never tried layering anything like this. I've always done my layering in this kind of approach.

Sound Design / Re: What's your opinion on Presets ?
« on: March 02, 2016, 03:32:38 am »
I think presets are a good choice for beginners who don't really have an ear for sound design or synth programming. They're the equivalent to me of guitar tabs. As training wheels they do their job but eventually you want to take them off as you get more familiar with sound design.

The reason why I like presets is because they can help you discover new sounds that you didn't think were possible.
The reason why I dislike presets is because they overcomplicate the amount of choices you have to choose from. (At least for me when I was a beginner)

I remember being so overwhelmed by sound design when I was first starting off because of how many presets there were to choose from in instruments like Massive or Sylenth. Once I realized that the majority of these presets were just variations of a square wave or a saw wave it simplified dance music instrumentation so much for me.

When I choose my sounds I like to browse through the ones I've already memorized in my imagination. In the same way I imagine drums or a bass in my head I do the same with commonly used synthesizer sounds. (supersaws, plucks, leads etc...) I find this method to be much faster than browsing through 100's of presets hoping that I come across the right sound.
