You Might Like... / New Monstercat Producer: Introducing Loosid!
« on: March 10, 2016, 07:41:28 am »
I had never heard of Loosid before but I found this song to be quite interesting. Loosid is apparently brand new to the monster cat label. I'm interested to find out more about him.

I agree with neutrin regarding the drums. I didn't notice anything about them being offbeat. They sounded just fine to me. I'm listening to the mix and to be honest nothing sounds off to me. Really good job with the balance of all the elements. At no point did I feel like any elements were fighting for space. 1:43 was my favorite part as well. Has a seven lions feel to it and to be honest he's one of my top inspirations. I'm not sure if he's one of yours but you definitely managed to capture his sound with the whole "trance-step" vibe. At 1:45 may I ask what you're doing with those saws as well? It sounds like you got the chord, chopped it into an audio, and applied fade ins to give it that "rising" effect.

I could be completely wrong though. Just mentioning this out of curiosity.

With that being said I've preferred some of your earlier tracks over this one. What you have here is good for sure but to me it's an average track. (I mean this is the most non jerkish way possible)
If someone were to ask me whether I liked it or not I would say yes but I wouldn't put it on my iPod you get me? I can't explain to you exactly why but at this point I'm assuming it has to be more of a taste thing.

Either that or my ears just aren't developed enough to be able to tell you yet. Either way good job on this track and I look forward to hearing more. :)

Thank's for all your replies guys. I found your response regarding the studies of success and self esteem to be quite interesting Cosmic. Kudos to you for having 25 years in electronic music production. Literally longer than I've been alive.

It seems to me like finding just the right balance between overconfidence and under confidence is what's necessary when it comes to producing.

I 100% agree about the finishing tracks thing. It's something that I've only just recently begun to take to heart thanks to someone on this forum. For awhile it's been something I've struggled with but only just recently do I feel like I've been making some changes. I've spent 70hours on my new track according to project timer these past 2 weeks and I've learnt SOO MUCH within those 70 hours. (New sounds, workflow improvements, mixing epiphanies etc...)

For awhile there I was definitely feeling my energy being sapped away from me due to low self esteem about my producer skills. It's been a constant struggle of not always being able to rise up to the challenge. I don't really think I've been noticing it's obvious affects though until you mentioned it the way you did Cosmic.

Thanks a lot guys for the tips. It seems like the extremes of both volume levels "too loud or too quiet" seem to really bring out the flaws apparent within your mix. Whether an instrument is too loud becomes much more apparent at these two extremes.

Seeing as I can't afford another set of monitors aside from my KRKs I'll make sure to monitor my mixes on different sound systems in the future. I have two good quality headphones, a set of monitors and a pair of consumer earphones. When I listen to professional mixes they sound just as good in those consumer earphones as they do on my headphones or KRKs. That's what's missing in my mixes and what I aspire to achieve with more practice.

Finished Tracks / Re: Ambient Piano Composition

I can live with that, haha. What in particular turns you off about the ambience?

I have to be careful about what I say here because I'm not 100% sure. This is my guess though.

I think somewhere midway through the song (1:00) the "ambience" gets a bit too loud. Either that or it has something to do with the "fuzz" you have going on in the high end. You know what I mean when I say fuzz? It might just be the high end specifically that gets too loud.

I think the whole point of ambience is for it to remain in the background whereas in this track it seems to be too audible.

Again. This is just my guess. I wouldn't actually know whether that was the thing turning me off about it unless it was my project file and I was able to slap an EQ on the ambience and test a few things. At least I know I got some work to do as far as defining my tastes goes.

How important do you guys think it is to have a sense of self efficacy as a producer? I've always told myself that producing is the most challenging thing I've ever taken up in my life. I'm not trying to lie to myself at all by any means when I say that. Thinking about it now though I feel like that mindset is starting to hurt me because I have a tendency to underestimate my own ability to rise up to those challenges.

When I think of the mindset of a great producer it isn't along the lines of "This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life." It's more along the lines of "This is next track is going to be a piece of cake and I can't wait to hear what I'm going to create next." I have a feeling I'm going to get so much hate for saying that and I AM over exaggerating when I say "piece of cake" for lack of a better term but please let me know your opinions.

Do you think that me having this belief is detrimental to my progress as a producer and if so how should I go about overcoming it?

But the truth is, I'm pretty good at playing metal, and chances are that that person would feel the same way if they heard me play, just because they don't know how to play metal!

Do you even "djent" tho?  :D

This sounds like it could a part of an OST to an anime. I think your choice of notes is really beautiful. Definitely some interesting harmonies in there with an enjoyable taste in melody.

I'm not really digging the ambience to be quite honest. I enjoyed the piano more than anything.

You know... I don't think it's bad. It's not really my cup of tea though. I can't really explain why though. It's probably more of a taste thing on my part but I will add that I enjoy listening to 0:30 more than anything.

I would like to hear more notes and by that I mean chords, melodies, instead of just drums, bass, and fx.

WIPs / Re: Deep Progressive House WIP
« on: March 07, 2016, 07:10:21 am »
Really beautiful atmosphere you managed to create. Not a whole lot of highs which makes it easy on the ears if that makes any sense. The "deep" progressive house isn't really my go-to genre but I found the arrangement to progress quite nicely. Didn't find things to be to repetitive. I think some parts would sound great with male vocals like the kind you hear in above & beyonds tracks.

Granted I'm not the best at mixing but nothing sounded particularly off to me.

The only thing that I think its missing is something to make the track special. I think the atmosphere you managed to create is what made the track for me.

I originally thought that I had a decent mix until I was listening to my track in consumer earphones at a high volume. Suddenly the kick had way too much "punch" and the highs became way too harsh on my ears. At medium volume It wasn't as bad but it just occured to me that listening at different volume levels changes my perspective of the mix.

Now I'm going back to work on these mixing errors but I feel a bit annoyed that I wasn't able to pick up these errors until I relistened to my track on these consumer earphones with the volume played on high. How can I prevent this in the future? Do you guys generally mix at one volume level or do you switch back and forth between quiet, medium, and loud during your sessions?

Not sure if this is what you're talking about but I'm gonna give your question a go.

I use logic pro X and if I want to use a kick to trigger a side chain but don't want to actually hear the kick playing I do this.

I program the 4/4 kick pattern and then on the mixing console I change the output from "stereo output" to Bus 1 (2,3,4,5,6 doesn't matter)

Once I've sent the kick to a bus I go to the output on the bus and remove it. I don't know what it's called because logic isn't open right now but basically you remove the bus output so that you don't hear the kick playing from your master. The kick is still going into the bus but no sound should be coming out.

Finally get the track that you would like to side chain and slap your compressor on it. From there you just set the side chain to the bus in that dropdown menu in the top right corner of the plugins and the kick should trigger the side chain without there being any sound from the kick.

That's my understanding of "trigger" side chains anyways.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: I don't understand mixing/mastering

I have always understood mixing as getting the right levels on each of the tracks in a song so every element sounds balanced and not out of place

This is good.

Say a song peaks at -3dB that means theres 3dB of headroom but that song could be much louder than another one that also has 3dB of headroom. How is this possible?

There's a difference between song peaks and loudness. A song can peak at -3db but that doesn't mean that the average level of the song is always -3db. RMS levels and transients play a factor as well.

Quote
How should I go about mixing songs so that they are loud?

I can give you only a little bit of insight when it comes to this. The high mid frequencies are perceived as being much louder than the bass frequencies but don't take up as much headroom. Make sure that you're low cutting every instrument that doesn't need that low end because they just take up valuable headroom in your mix. If you're using reverbs make sure to EQ them to get rid of that low end mud. Finally use compressors to get rid of any unnecessary transients/peaks on your instruments.

some things I've made max out at 0dB and are quiet compared to other things I've made that max at -3dB.

That's because peak level does not equal RMS level.
